MBPAPA General Meeting by Rowan Wolnick

Thursday, September 13th, twenty-five MBPAPA members gathered to eat, socialize and brain-storm about our
organization. It was called a General Meeting, but it was a wonderful gathering of food and friends. Very briefly,
Board Members presented the group with bare bones overviews of where MBPAPA stands in its growth. Sibyl
reported that we now have 80 members and Joe, in absentia, presented his current balance and financial report
DougMorgan-The Falls Beyond for the remainder of the year. Christine spoke about our affiliation with the Maritime Museum and their enthusi-

The Poetry of Waves - William F. Ritschel (1864-1949)
Marine paintings are currently on display through December 9th at the Monterey Museum of Art.
“Few living marine painters know the sea as Ritschel does…when he paints a fine marine you feel it in
the beauty and the danger, the cruel, barren ocean-
love which will not release the enthralled painter.” Los
Angeles Times, Art Critic. 1924. William Frederick
Ritschel is best known for his depictions of the Central
California Coastline. Born in Nuremburg, Bavaria in
1865, he emigrated to New York City in 1895. Some-
time after 1909 he built a stone, castle-like home over-
looking the ocean in Carmel Highlands, where he lived
the remainder of his life.

Grandma Moses  A.Ritchel - Monterey Cove
Grandmother to the Nation - Sept. 8, 2007 to Jan. 6, 2008, Crocker Art Museum
Anna Mary Robertson (Grandma) Moses’ (1860-1961) status as a cultural icon is extraordinary in
American art.  Raised on an upstate New York farm, she was a traditional daughter, wife, mother,
homemaker and grandmother who at age 76 tried painting after arthritis made needlework painful.
Her passion for painting came late in life, but she created more than 1,500 paintings before her death
at age 101. Distinguished by idyllic rural subjects, Moses’ style is immediately recognized; her charming
themes illustrate the American ideal of prosperity and happiness
rooted in an agrarian society.
This exhibition is a much overdue retrospective, highlighting
unique perspectives on Grandma Moses by placing her art in the
context of transition between the Great Depression and World War II,
as well as the prosperity and domesticity of the 1950s. Her signature
works are placed alongside those rarely seen, supplemented by an
additional selection of the artist’s personal artifacts.

MBPAPA Paint Out & Demo with Maria Boisvert
On Saturday, Sept, 15, MBPAPA members met at the Coast Guard Pier in Monterey .  If you have
not been there recently, there is a nice area beyond the boat works that is nicely landscaped.  It faces
the ocean and there is adequate space to set up and paint.  Maria Boisvert gave a very interesting
demonstration.  She was well prepared and showed us her notes from Jim Schmidt, who has been an
inspiration for her.  Also she recommended Edgar Payne’s book, Composition of Outdoor Painting.
Maria is very excited about her painting and her demonstration reflected that.
