SMPN 1 BALIKPAPAN, EAST KALIMANTAN

Objectives:
Students are able to
• Explain the instrument for measuring of
length in daily life.
• Explain the instrument for measuring of
time in daily life.
• Explain the instrument for measuring of
mass in daily life.
UNITS OF MEASUREMENT
• In the past, people used their body as
units of measurement such as, cubit,
fathoms, span and step.
• In 1960 the metric system was used and
officially called the international system or
SI Units ( La Systeme International
d’Unites)
Termometer

a clock
• In the SI , each fundamental quantity has unit.
For example Quantity and SI Units

NO. Quantity Units Symbol

1. Length Meter m
2. Mass kilogram kg
3. Time second s

4. etc
• For measuring more or less than one meter

you can use prefixes in the table below.

Prefix Symbol Multiplying Factor
Kilo k 1000 103
Hecto h 100 102
Deca da 10 101
Deci d 0.1 10-1
Centi c 0.01 10-2
Mili m 0.001 10-3
Micro µ 0.000001 10-6
Nano n 0.000000001 10-9
While inch is British unit.
One inch is approximately 2.5 centimeters.
• For example, kilo uses figure 3 as the exponent or 1000 = 103

one kilometer is 1000 meters.
