Within this broad mission, BWF seeks to accomplish twoprimary goals—to help scientists early in their careers develop asindependent investigators, and to advance felds in the basic biomedicalsciences that are undervalued or in need o particular encouragement.BWF’s fnancial support is channeled primarily through competitivepeer-reviewed award programs, which encompass seven major categories:biomedical sciences, inectious diseases, interaces in science, populationsciences, reproductive sciences, translational research, and scienceeducation. BWF makes grants primarily to degree-granting institutions inthe U.S. and Canada on behal o individual researchers, who must benominated by their institutions. To complement these competitive awardprograms, BWF also makes grants to nonproft organizations conductingactivities intended to improve the general environment or science.Governed by a Board o Directors composed o distinguishedscientists and business leaders, BWF was ounded in 1955 as thecorporate oundation o the pharmaceutical frm Burroughs WellcomeCo. In 1993, a generous git rom the Wellcome Trust, enabled BWF tobecome ully independent rom the company, which was acquired byGlaxo in 1995. BWF has no afliation with any corporation.
