Management - some earlier contributors:

*The Chinese philosopher Mencius (372-289BC) dealt with

conceptual models and systems familiar now under the term of production
management techniques. He indicated the advantages of the division of
labor.

*Records indicate that the ancient Greeks understood the advantages of,
and practiced, uniform work methods. Their soldiers were instructed as to
how their weapons and equipment should be laid out in case of a surprise
attack. They also employed work songs to develop a rhythm, in order to
achieve a smooth less fatiguing tempo, to improve productivity.

*The division of labor was recognized by Plato (427-347BC). He wrote 'A

man whose work is confined to such limited task must necessarily excel at
it'

FREDERICK W. TAYLOR
(1856-1915) :
THE FATHER OF SCIENTIFIC
MANAGEMENT:-
People should be trained to
perform each job in the best way,
and management and workers
should cooperate so that the job
is performed in the desired
manner.

The majority of Taylor's excellent

work is clouded by his
misconception that workers
restrict output from ‘the natural
instinct and tendency of men to
take it easy.’ He referred to it as
‘soldering’
crucible steel shop owned and operated by Bethlehem Steel
1913 Assembly Line
Ford Motor Company’s
first moving assembly
line was located in
Highland Park,
Michigan in 1913.
Above, the exterior of
the Ford building was
used for lowering the
auto body on the chassis.
Ford Motor Company
was one of the first
manufacturing plants to
use assembly lines to
mass produce “look alike
automobiles.” It allowed
Henry Ford to keep
prices down and better
control the quality of the
automobile.
Hawthorne EXPERIMENTS

Illumination Experiment
Relay Assembly Test Room Experiments
Bank Wiring Room Experiment
Strong informal groups exist
Non-economic factors affect employees’
behavior at work
FRANK AND LILLIAN
GILBRETH:

FANATIC ABOUT
REDUCING
INEFFICIENCY.

CONSIDERED
INEFFICIENCY AND TIME
WASTAGE AS GREATEST
CHALLENGE FOR
MANAGERS.

EVEN APPLIED HIS

THEORIES AT HOME.
HENRY FAYOL:
DIVIDED management into five
activities: planning, organizing,
commanding, coordinating,
and controlling.
FAYOL’S PRINCIPLE’S:
Division of Work .
Unity of Direction.
Unity of Command.
Authority and
Responsibility .
Scalar Chain .
Stability of Personnel .
Esprit de Corps.

MODERN MANAGEMENT
THOUGHT
A SIMPLE BANK SYSTEM
MODERN MANAGER’S PERSPECTIVE:

Organizations must be thought of as open systems.

 Useful ideas have been contributed by many different views of

management.

Organizations must be designed to consider a variety of individual

needs.

Emphasis on decision-making analyses as opposed to blind application

of universal principles.

They also encourage managers to respond quickly to changes that

occur in the environment
You don't manage people, you lead them.

leadership guides organizational energy rather than

attempting to control and dominate it.

They are not employees , they are people.
