“No country which wishes to play a leading

part in the world can afford to neglect pure

Or long term research”

CHANDRAYAAN-I
INTRODUCTION:

ISRO the primary body for space research under the

control of the government of India

Leading space research organisations in the world

Established in its modern form in 1969

SPEARHEADS:Vikram Sarabhai AND  Homi babha

Launch vehicles:SLV,ASLV,PSLV,GSLV,GSLV III

OBJECTIVES:

FIRST INDIAN PROBE

SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTS

 Preparation of a three-dimensional atlas

Chemical and mineralogical mapping of the entire lunar

surface

 To increase the scientific knowledge

The impact of a sub-satellite (MIP) on the surface on the

Moon as a fore-runner to future soft-landing missions.
SPECIFIC AREAS OF STUDY:

High-resolution mineralogical and Chemical Imaging

Search for surface or sub-surface lunar water-ice

Identification of chemicals in lunar highland rocks.

To map the height variation of the lunar surface

features.

To provide new insights in understanding the Moon's

origin and evolution.

Mission Sequence
• Launch: 22 Oct 2008
• Took 21 days to reach final lunar orbit
• Series of orbit-increasing manoeuvres.
• Lunar orbit insertion on 8th Nov 2008.
• The Moon Impact Probe (MIP) crash-landed
on the lunar surface on 14 November 2008.
ACHIEVEMENTS

• Tracking complex space craft

• Raising of satellite’s orbit from earth station

• Succeeded in image sensing of mineralogical

mapping.
WATER DISCOVERY
• Most significant
discovery
• MIP detected water
molecules in moons
surface
• NASA’s M3
confirmed MIP’s
discovery on 24th
September,2009
WAS CHANDRAYAAN A
“FAILURE”???
• Orbit was raised from 100 to 200km
• ISRO were forced to deactivate most of the
payloads aboard Chandrayaan
• The satellite lost all contact with the ground
station on August 29
• ISRO claims that 95% mission objectives have
been accomplished
• Almost 70000 images of the moon’s surface was
taken
• Uneventful termination of the mission was not in
vein.
FUTURE PROSPECTS

• Chandrayaan-1,good investment for the

future
• Chandrayaan-1 a learning experience
• ISRO dreams of lead a mission to Mars by
2013-2016
• Chandrayaan-II by 2013
