COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
 Cognition is the process of knowing and
understanding the environment.
 Cognitive development is the development of
those basic skills which help us in getting to know
the environment.
 Areas that need attention:
 The five senses: sight,hearing,taste,touch,smell.
 Memory and observation:
 Classification,sequential thinking,
seriation,problem solving and reasoning.
COGNITION
 Formation of basic concepts:
 Concept of color,
shape,premathematical,environmental,natura
lenvironment, physical environment and
social environment.
 Cognitive tasks: Along with the knowledge of
how children think, theories of cognition also
provide insight into what cognitive skills
children acquire during the early years.
PIAGET’S THEORY IS VERY IMPORTANT.
DEVELOPMENT OF BASIC
COGNITIVE SKILLS
 Sensory development:
 Sense of sight:Matching of blocks, odd one out,
matching object and picture etc.
 Sense of hearing:Children can match boxes producing
similar sound or can arrange them in order of pitches.
 Sense of touch: Touch cards with different cloth
pieces, like hard, soft, rough etc.
 Sense of taste: Exposure to sweet, salty, bitter etc.
 Sense of smell:Exposure to pleasant and unpleasant
smell.
DEVELOPMENT OF BASIC
COGNITIVE SKILLS
 Memory and observation: memory game, find
the missing part.
 Classification: as per color, shape, size
material etc, game of categories, cards of
classification.
 Problem solving and reasoning: Mazes, lock
and key cards to match etc.
 Seriation: Unit blocks, pink tower, arranging
picture cards related to a story.
FORMATION OF BASIC
CONCEPTS
 Concept of color: Through
stories,rhymes and
songs,matching,naming etc.
 Concept of shape: Free and structured
conversation,rhymes,pasting shape
dominoes,shape day.
PREMATHEMATICAL
CONCEPTS
 Prenumber concept: Size,length,
weight,mass,height,distance like big and small,wide
and narrow,far and near. Etc.
 Number concepts:Through stories,songs and
rhymes,dramatic play,clock
shop,telephoning,number chain,constructing
numerals.
 Concept of space:top,bottom,in and out,over and
under ,here and there. Can be reinforced through
games.
 Concept of time and temperature as well.
COGNITIVE MILESTONES
 Skills that a child acquires within a specific
time frame towards learning and solving
problems.
 Milestones develop in sequential fashion.
 Each milestone that a child acquires builds on
the last milestone developed.
 Example:imitation of gestures and actions,
responds to simple directions etc.
