21. Remarks

(1) Fighter opposition:

Estimate 15 fighters encountered. There were 34 attacks. d'S Two near IP, three after leaving the target, one 40 miles after Ian t end, one over Shingu (3337N - IJ535E) and the remainder in the targe area. Most of these were while B-29s were illuminated by fireS or searchlights. Two cases of two aircraft coordinated attacks were reported. Two B-29s received minor fighter damage. Some creWS felt attacks lacked aggressiveness because of difficulty in maintaining visual contact. EXGept for one being described as a NICK and another as an IRVING, the fighters were not Lderrt i ri ed , En route to the target, 30 miles west of Hachijo Jima and at an altitude of 6,500'

a B-29 was circled at 5,000 I by an unidentified aircraft vii th wing lights on.

(2) Antiaircraft:

On bomb run and over target antiaircraft was both medium and heavy, moderate and m.ainly inaccurate. Many phosphorus shells were observed. Heavy antiaircraft used predicted concentrations and barrages. Approximately 30 searchlights in target area, not as effective as Tokyo searchlights.

(3) Aircraft lost or in distress:

One aircraft is rr..issing with no word at all.

(4) Aircraft seriously damaged or crashe~ on return:

None

(5) Aircraft battle damage:

(7) Photographic Interpretation:

Strike photographs show many large fires in the city but there is not sufficient detail to establish exaot locations. Crews reportetl large fires throughout the city. One homing aircraft reported smake rising to 25,000 feet.

(8) Crew Comments:

In addition to the information given above the following remarks are made. 154 aircraft were airborne in 71 minutes. The route out wa:s without incident. The a.ir was turbulent at the t(U"get after fires were started. Ce.ilings at Saipan averaged 300 feet,· with

visibilities often below a mile at return so 35 aircraft were diverted to GUam. Ten landed at Tinian and 7 at Kobler field also 1 superdumbo landed at Guam and 1 at Tinian. Four aircraft had already landed at Iwo Jima for various reasons. In addition to the main effort there were 3 superdumbos and 3 homing aircraft that flew with the

mission. The homing aircraft oarried 6 x 500-lb GP bombs. These

were dropped on Yokkaishi, between 11162QZ and 111649Z from betWeen 2,500 feet and 2,700 feet. One crew reported seeing three flares

sent up that were believed to be controlled by radar, because When aircraft turned tlares followed. Searchlights CaIne on immediately afterward and were able to hold observing airoraft in beam.

COroIlents are being analyzed by this headquarters and appropriate action will be taken.

SUrface wind wes north-northeast, moderate. . .

14. FactOl'S ~~ffecting the SUccess or FailUre of the Mission

a. Weather did not adversely affect this mission until return to base ~ere a lou overcast and extremely law visibility hampered landing procee-dure and caused dispersion of air~raft t. other bases.

b. The creil of the aircraft 'which landed at 1'110 .TlM;. indicated that Without that emersency landing field, they would most certainly have had to ditch enroute home. One engine had been shot up and the fUel transfer systeln ilas inoperative.

2, 'l'his 139mb Group had thirty-fiv':l (35) 4e s chedul.eo to bomb on t":'8 mission. Thirty-four (34) v.~re airborne.

~hirty four (34) A/e bombeq th~ primary target.

a. The disposition of bombs n\~t dr-opped on the primary are as i'ollo'-. ~ :

A-16 (5348) jettisoned four (4) bombs to bal mce the Ale. The hight ehgiQeer IlUirred the A/e was tail heavy and that the briefed AS could not, be .flc..wn U.'1'· til these bombs were, jettj.t-'c..ned..

J-..-27 (4627) jet ti"oned six I. 6; b"'mi:J.> Ofo;(, ~ "'~ (.: electrical failure (Dee under dL~fiCl:1.l~,1 s," ~ •

3. a. 0oviations from pIa:!.

There were a few iVC th&t C:id not follt.·w t he b'ciefed plan as far as altitude and air speed were concerned, Thoro was no reason given for these deviatioOG.

Two (2) 4e, .1,-32 and A-33 t/tJre ~_oaded ·witl'. ~6..o~28 and'32XE28 respectively because of no cl:nter racks beir.g installed.

Only one f._fC had to make a complete vi5ua:_ run because of radar f'af.Lur-e ,

b. Difficulties encountered.

One (1) A/e, A-J4 had difficu:ty .lith the f')l'\~~rd bomb bay over the target. These doors did not open ::uly end the bOi!lbs would not release normally. The (coors were then closed. epd opened again and all b0'1lbs salvoed normally.

,-27 has had electric-al 1.1 oub'Le on the h",:, ':'OKyo mission and this mission. 1.11 bombs had to be sa.Ivoed , EO"lever ~n both missions six (6) bombs hung up and had to be jettis~ned on return to base. The racks check on the ground sat:'~fa('t':l1"i~.'T. Armament is checking this A/e completely. 1.-4 r e.Lea se system.

Two (2) Jl,/C had nB'1.r collisions I'lith other l,/e over the target. OnF. \\':. .. ·.h ?nother B-29 during the final stages of the bomb run, ~nd tho other with a night fighter in a head-on attack.

4. In thE- case when 1\./e were flying higher or fastE>r than bri~fed, the slant range would be incorrect for the specific aiming nowt ;>It,pougr, in !"lost cases the bombardier took over during the l"st phases of the run and dropped on a portion of the city tr .. '1t was not already burning.

5. There is' no 'criticism of the mi.ae lon planning.

6. It was suggested by some bombardiers that the last squadrons taking off be loaded with GP bombs for they believe that the njc plants 194 and 193 could be easily bombed after tho=: fire.s are burning.

'7, No formation. hll R./C had either a K-22, a K-20 or a : a:ib.r ~ C Jj,.Jt. cameru _

:>. The obs _. ,'~-d bombin::; rL.sults were excellent. Fir"s were observed in all parts of tn - Ci·~y.

Type Projeotile:

"j;lhile 12.7 -mm and 20 -mra fir e was reported by- one Group, generally orews were unable to determine the type of projeotile used or the armament patterns. As a whole the enemy fire was inacoura.te in spite of the fact that one of aU!' aircraft had one of its engines put out of cornai s af on over the target by' enemy fire.

The average number of yar-ds to which enemy airoraft are estimated to have pressed their attacks, correlated with the dir8ctions and angles of attack, are as folloWS:

~4. ENEMY AIRCRAFT !IlARKINGS:

Crews were unabln to discern colors or markings. It is noted, however, that the majority of E/A were reported with wing lights (one green and one 'J~hi te l, OthEn's were observed with an added whi.te light i.n the tail assembly.

25. ENEl'!lY TACTICS:

B. An estimated 15 enemy aircraft were enoountered. The attacks were poorly pressed and generally non-aggressive. This may have been due to the evid.ent difficulty of kee pa ng visual contact with our aircraft. However, ono of our aircraft was jumped by approximately six enemy a.ircraft 30 to 40 m.iles at sea and followed throughout its remaining course to lands end, executing 12' attacks during that period.

In some instances enemy aircraft appeared to be milling about the target area depending on searchlights to lead then to QUI' aircraft. Other enemy aircraft ws.re reported firing from above at the silhouette of our aircraft against the fires below. Still other enemy aircraft made at'tacks in.total darkness away from the target area.

b.Types of !~ttacks

While attacks from the rear quar t sr , level to high, predominate, attacks, at illl levels from the front and left q_uarteT wers reported. Only one attack, below, was received from the right quarter. Due to bad v.isibility, orews were unable to determine the types of breakaways in most cases.

c. Coordinated Attacks

The following two coordinated attacks wer-e reported:

Two unid~ntified Gn6my aircraft attacked, line abreast, at 12 o'clock 16vel, opening fi.re at about 600 to 700 yards. Grew was un!ble to discern how closely the attack was pressed or the type of ~reakaway.

A~]6 (5348) jetti~ohed four (4) bombs to balance the Ale. The fHght engineer clai.rr.ed the Ie was tail '1eavy and that the briefed AS could nat be flown un~il these bombs \~<;re jettisoned.

J..-27 (4627) jettisoned si.' (6) bombs bt'lcs'Ise c f electrical failure (see under difficultie,,).

3. a. Deviations from plan.

There were a few Vc that did nat follow the briefed plan as far as altitude and air speed were concerned. There was no reason givr>n for these deviations.

TV/a (2) rile. A-32 and A-33 w~re loaded with 36XE28 and 32XE28 respectively because of no center racks being installed.

Only one A/e had to make a com, l!:lte visual run because of radar failure.

b, Difficulties encountered.

One (1) Ale, A-34 had difficulty with the forward bomb bay over the tc.rget. These doot's did not open fully and the bombs would not release norme.lly. The doors were then cloSGd and opened again and all bombs sal voed norma.lly.

A-27 has had electrical Llout,:e on the last 'IQ~ro mission and thiJ mission. 1.11 bombs had to be sa Lvoed , Powever an both missions six (6) bombs hung up and had to be jettisoned on return to base. The racks check on the ground sat:!..s.f :::torD". Armament is crecking this Ale completely. A-4 release system.

Two (2) n/e had near collisions 'with other Ie over the target. One with anoHl<'lr B-29 during the final stages of the bomb run, and tho other with a night fighter in a head-on attack.

4. In the case when Ale were flying higher or fast~r than briefed, the slant range would be incorrect for the specific aiming poir.t ",1 though . n most cases t.he bombardier took over during the l:a.st phases of t\1e run and dropped on a portion of the city t,ha t was not <' 1ready burning.

5. There is no criticism of the mission planning.

6. It vias suggested by same bombardiers that the last squadrons taking off be loaded with GP bombs for they believe that the Ale plants 194 and 193 could be easily bombed after the fires are· burning,

7. No formation . .1..11 "Ie had either a K-22, a K-20 or a rar'\.ar sC:lpe cnmeru.

8. The observed bombing results were excellent. Fires were observed in all parts of the City.

CONSOLIDATED MISSION REPORT AA AND AIR TO AIR BOMBING

17 • ENEMY ANTIAIRCRAFT FIRE:

Target: Osaka. There was heavy.' meager. and inaccurate AA just before landfall. At Awaji Island, heavy, meager, inaccurate

predicted concentrations were observed.' .

On the bomb run altitudes were from 5,200 to 9.600 came from both ships in the harbor aud land batteries. meager, inaccurate predicted concentrations and meager, medium AA in this area. The medium AA was mostly low.

feet. AA Heavy. inaccurate

Over the target altitudes were the same as above. Heavy AA was continuously pOint.ed. gener-ally inaccure. te and intense. Medium AA was generally inaccurate and moderate. Approximately

20 phosphorus bursts were seen over the city'. One hundred twent;yfour airoraft fle'w over the target and five were damageq. by AA! .

Reports indicate that ships were scattered along the route out from about J4000'N-136o50'E to 32020'N-137°JO'E. OnE aircraft r ece i ved !.J!.. for 15 minutes. Another was fired on for a shorter time. The AA was mediU111, meager, and accurate. TWo rockets were seen, evidently launched from ships, about 60 miles south of land's end. No damage was caused, but one was fairly ac cur at e ,

Searchlights were hampered by clouds and smoke. Lights worked singly rather than in gr-oups of five or ten as in Tokyo and Nagoya. Approximately 35 senrohlights were in the target area. They could. not be pin-pointed because of poor visibi}:i.t;V. In general searchlight accuracy was poor.
