Balmy August Evening by Natascha Maciejewski

I tried to hold on to the last of your warmth,

My mind crumbling under the weight of your silence;
Every part of me tearing like fine tissue paper.
Terror drowning me, filling my nostrils like tar;
Like waves in a rip tide; pushing me under,
Dragging me out to a life I did not know.
Misery settling over me, like an impenetrable fog,
I lay on the bed beside you, tears soaking your nightdress,
Your body cooling in the balmy August evening,
Your bright burning light dimming before my eyes;
Heart stilled, breath halted, spark extinguished.
