CORNEAL BLINDNESS

 How can ‘Corneally’ blind persons be made to see ?


By merely replacing the damaged Cornea with a good Cornea, these
Corneally Blind person can begin to see.

Is there any artificial substitute for a damaged ‘Cornea’?


No; despite all the advances in science, there is no artificial substitute
invention so far to replace a human Cornea.

HOW TO DONATE EYES
If death occurs in a Hospital :
• Discuss your intention of eye donation with Doctor and
Relatives.
• Request Doctor to give the Consent Form.
• Two Relatives / close friends should sign this Consent Form.
• The Doctor on duty, will then arrange for the Enucleation.
If death occurs at Home :
• Get the vital death certificate quickly.
• Close the eye lids.Cover the closed lids with moist cotton.
• Switch off fan ( Switch on the air conditioner if possible.)
• Raise the donor’s head by 6 inches by placing two pillow
under it.
• Contact your nearest eye bank as soon as possible.

FACTS ABOUT EYE DONATION

 Only the Cornea is used for transplant


 Anyone can be an eye donor
 There is no disfigurement of the donor’s face
 Cataracts and glasses are due to conditions
related to the lens and not the cornea
 Eyes can be donated only AFTER death

 AIDS or HIV- Positive
 Active viral Hepatitis B or C
 Rabies
 Septicemia (wbc over 15,000)
 Malignancies such as Leukemia
 Active Tuberculosis
 Metastasis Cancer
 CJD (Creutzfeldt - Jacob Disease)
 Viral Encephalitis
 Active Lymphomas, Retinoblastoma
 Jaundice
 Active Syphilis
 Dementia
 Intrinsic Eye Disease
