The University College of Engineering is a premier institute of the region providing quality education in the field of engineering and technology. With its first batch well placed in various reputed companies and having extensively growing premises, the college is successfully marching forward in its endeavour to shape nation building engineers of tomorrow. The Department of Computer Science, through its extensive research work has placed the university amongst the top universities of the region. Prof. G.S. Lehal, did a successful research on Shahmukhi to Gurmukhi transliteration solution for networking, a project that is being handled by Panasia networking programme of the international development research center, Canada. Prof. Chandan Singh has also been doing active research in the department. I extend my heartiest congratulations to the faculty and the students of the Department of Computer Science and University College of Engineering and wish them all the best for the future. The University Punjabi University, one of the premier institutions of higher education in northern India, was established on 30th April 1962 under the Punjab Act No. 35 of 1961 and was inaugurated on 24th June 1962 by the then President DR. S. Radhakrishnan. This is the second university in the world to be named after a language, the first being Hebrew University of Israel. Although initially the main task of the University was to develop and promote the language of the Punjabi people, it has since evolved into a multi-faceted, multifaculty educational institution with over fifty five teaching and research departments catering to the educational need of the students in diverse fields varying from Pharmacological science to ‘Management Space Science and Business to fast moving field of Computer Science & Engineering. ‘The campus located away from the din of city is spread over a sprawling 320 acres of lush green lawns and tree lined avenues graced with magnificent buildings such as The Guru Gobind Singh Bhawan, The Guru Tegh Bahadur Complex, Astronomical Observatory, Art Gallery, Museum, Velodrome and many other. Some departments have been able to develop research tie-ups with industry. Several faculty members have won national and international awards in recognition to their research work. Department of Computer Science & Engineering was established in the year 1987 and was one of the oldest to introduce a four year B.Tech. course in Computer Engineering in the northern region. It was renamed to Department of Computer Science and thereafter the B.Tech. programme was shifted to University College of Engineering, with the introduction of two new branches viz. Electron- ics & Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering The technical courses offered by the university are as follows: 1. B.TECH PROGRAMME COMPUTER ENGINEERING (CE) ELECTRONICS & COMM. ENGINEERING (ECE) MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (ME) 2. M.C.A. 3. M.TECH. (CS, ICT) BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY Bachelor of Technology programme is offered in three core branches of engineering under the aegis of University College of Engineering {UCoE) and Yadavindra College of Engineering (YCoE). The four-year academic curriculum provides a basic foothold of different aspects of engineering along with exposure to industry and research . The first ‘two semesters for all branches are same including subjects like Engineering Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, English, Communication Skills, Engineering Graphics, etc. The four-year course of Bachelor of Technology in Computer Engineering is one of the most prestigious in the region. The course curriculum is regularly upgraded to conform to the latest development in the field to cater to the rapidly growing needs of Information Technology industry. Consequently, the product of this course is well sought by the Industry. The team of highly experienced faculty members is guiding the students of this programme to make them responsible and highly knowledgable computer professionals for facing the day by day increasing challenges of the Information Technology industry. To provide students a thorough grounding in Computer technology, the course structure is organized in eight semesters. The first seven semesters are devoted to impart an in-depth knowledge in software as well hardware concepts and their practical applications. The assessment of a student is done not only through conventional examinations at the end of semester but also throughout the semester by regular assignments, seminars, debates and mid — semester tests which contribute to fifty percent of the total ass sment.
