for Sept. 25 & 26 in Greenville
The 48th Annual Ohio Gourd Show will be held September 25 and
BUSINESS SERVICE DIRECTORY!
26 at the Darke County Fairgrounds in Greenville. This event brings
together outstanding gourd artists and craftspersons from across the
nation. The theme for this year’s show is “Gourds of Yesteryear.”
Included in the 95 gourd craft classes are carving, woodburning, paint-
ing, wall hangings, wreaths, holiday items, musical instruments, useful
articles, jewelry, toys, both realistic and fantasy birds and animals, bas-
kets, bowls, and other items. Many artists and craftsmen will have a per-
sonal booth where they offer other aspects of their work for sale. Other
divisions of the show display current season gourds, dry gourds, and both
junior and youth competitions.
Gourd growers from areas far beyond Ohio will be loading up trucks
and trailers and heading for Greenville to display thousands of dry gourds
in every imaginable size and shape. Also offered will be seasonal deco-
rations such as fresh gourds, mini pumpkins, Indian corn, bittersweet,
etc.
Workshops begin Friday, Sept. 24, and are also held Saturday and
Sunday afternoons. These small group classes are taught by qualified
instructors who have a wealth of experience and know-how to impart to
eager students. Participants who finish a project on Friday may enter
their handiwork in Saturday’s competition. To register for workshops,
contact Terry Sipple at: tvmosipple@sisna.com.
A large trade show offers all kinds of tools used in gourd crafting as
well as paints, inks, and other finishes. Crafters will find lacings, grass-
es, exotic papers, threads, beads, and most anything needed to embellish
that special gourd project.
Sunday will be designated as Family Day. “Story Time” at noon fea-
tures children’s stories using gourds in the telling. Children’s crafts will
be presented at 1 p.m. Kids will have the opportunity to decorate a gourd
and take it home. Scheduled at 2 p.m. is “Old Fashioned Gourd Fun” with
a water relay and a Gourd Derby Car Race Demo. Also scheduled at 3
p.m. is a session titled “Grow Your Own Gourds.” Seeds for over 60 vari-
eties of gourds will be available for purchase.
A musical program is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the Ohio
Center. Using instruments made from gourds, exotic rhythms and dances
will be presented by the Oxford Gourd and Drum Ensemble and the
Circle of Rhiannon Drum and Dance Group which features American
tribal-style Belly Dancing, as well as a husband-wife team who perform
traditional and Appalachian-style folk music accompanied by a gourd
banjo. On Sunday between 2 and 4 p.m. “Tulisoma” will hold an eclec-
tic “jam session.” “Tulisoma” is a Swahili word meaning “we have stud-
ied” as well as “we have been learning.” People who have gourd musical
instruments are invited to bring them to the jam session and join in mak-
ing great gourd music.
Children age 12 and under admitted free. Parking is free. Hours are
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. 9/22-24
