Why dissertation?
The dissertation written by a university scholar in order to achieve their doctorate is,
without any doubts, the most challenging undertaking of any student’s academic career. It
serves as the culmination of many years and countless hours of study and preparation,
and if written well, can be the crowning achievement that sets the writer apart from their
peers, earning them respect in their respective field of endeavor.

The advantage of dissertation

Very few of us will ever face this sort of overwhelming writing challenge. But for those
who do, it is comforting to know that the same basic writing and research skills that got
you through high school term papers and college theses will continue to serve you well as
you begin work on your dissertation.

Next step: have a thesis

By the time you reach this point, you have probably already decided on your subject and
have narrowed it down without whittling away any useful meat that might have merit.
You should have a working thesis or theory and be very nearly ready to set about proving
it and then share your findings with your peers and those who have the power to elevate
you from mere mortal status to that of a doctor. Having said this, you have already taken
the first and most difficult step in writing your dissertation. The thesis and your ability to
share your thoughts, findings and ideas on the subject it entails are the brain and the
heartbeat of the dissertation. If you have brain function and heartbeat, you are alive and if
you are alive, you can succeed in your goals.

What you need to keep you on the real path

Now most doctorate dissertations follow prototypical formulas based loosely upon the
many varied fields of endeavor for which doctorate degrees are awarded. A person
pursuing a doctorate in zoology and one whose field of profession is economics will
follow different, yet similar paths, on their journey from thesis to finished paper. And as
every journey in life requires a map to serve as a guide, this one is no exception. A guide
is needed for keeping the writer on their proper path and enabling them to avoid long and
confusing detours. Indeed, steering clear of wrong-turns is truly essential on a trip such as
this. And so it is incumbent upon every student preparing to write their dissertation to
begin with laying out their strategy in the form of an outline. We all learned how to create
an outline in grade school. This one will, of course, differ tremendously in both length
and complexity. A properly formulated and followed outline, however, will enable the
writer to take their thesis through every step of the journey and arrive at the desired
destination having accomplished the task they undertook.

Create an outline – important element of the body in writing

Like a skeleton made of many bones that work together to create the human form, the
outline provides the bare bones of the dissertation. The thesis, if we continue with this
analogy, serves as both the brain and the pulse. Now we will need to flesh out the
creature, giving it vital organs, muscle and recognizable features so that it can share itself
with the reader. We are not Frankensteins bent on creating a monster. We are students,
showing the world that we have learned enough and are competent to prove to all that we
deserve to have the highest academic rank possible in our fields. As such, we seek to
bring to life the thesis and outline, creating a body of work that will speak for our
accomplishments in an animated and engaging manner.

Research – the secret of a successful outline

How do you go about fleshing out the bare, skeletal outline of your dissertation? In what
manner can you give form and substance to the body of this great undertaking? The
answer is simple. You dig. You dig deeply into whatever sort of research best suits your
particular field of study. Some of you will spend untold hours laboring in a laboratory.
Others will go out into the wilderness, live among the beasts, and observe nature for
many months, making observations and taking meticulous notes. Still, others will spend
days, weeks and maybe even years going through mathematical formulas and equations.
But each and every one of you will have one very important thing in common. You will
not leave any stone that might help your dissertation unturned. Your research will be as
relentless as your desire to achieve your doctorate degree.

What should the conclusion consist of?

When the bones at last have flesh on them, and the heartbeat and brain are working in
conjunction with the newly created body, you need to stand the whole thing up, give it
feet so it can rise and stand above the works of others. The conclusion or summarization
of your doctorate dissertation will be the magnum opus of the entire process. In this final
section you will skillfully weave your words so that you encompass your original thesis,
every scrap of supporting evidence and also impart something of your own passion and
interest so that this section of the work will be the one that is remembered by any who
reads it. After all, writing this dissertation has been a journey and the journey’s success
depends upon arriving successfully at the proper destination. Make sure that your
conclusion is the place where you want your readers to arrive when they take the journey
you’ve mapped out in your dissertation.

People who help with your writings

Of course, no matter what you might think, you will not be writing this paper alone. No. I
am not suggesting you hire a ghostwriter or get a teammate or cheat. I am simply
reminding you that you have a lot of other people’s hard work standing behind you,
backing up every word. Each teacher, professor and mentor who influenced you will have
a hand in the finished product of your dissertation. And every writer or other source of
information that contributed to your body of knowledge, allowing you to ascend to this
point in your studies, will be part of the finished product. And while you know that you
may not steal material from others, you certainly can benefit from their wisdom and
knowledge as much during the writing of your dissertation as you have throughout the
length of your studies in your particular field of endeavor. They are the invisible support
group that has aided and abetted you as you struggled through the long and often
daunting process of writing your dissertation.

A brief review of the points in your journey

So, let us review for a moment, if you will. You have a strong, solid thesis. You have
written and crafted a reliable outline to serve as a guide for your work on this
dissertation. You, then, went and did whatever amount of research you required to fill in
all of those points on the outline, deriving from this study the knowledge that you want to
impart and share with those who will read the finished product. Then, you sat down at a
keyboard and began to write. With each and every word you wrote, the parts and pieces
of the dissertation began to mass, taking both form and shape. When you had, at last,
written enough research-based material to strongly support your thesis, you then wrote a
well-worded summarization or conclusion that stated the outcome of your work in a
skillful and an articulate manner meant to convince your readers and serve as proof of
your successful efforts. You cited your sources and signed your name. You have reached
an important juncture at this time. You are nearing the finish line.

Just before the finish line…..

Because you are so very close to achieving your goal, this is a point where you really
need to sit back and take a deep breath. And while you’re at it, take a little advice, as
well. Go for walk. Go and see a movie. Or do something for a few hours to clear your
head and then, sit down and read the entire dissertation through from the beginning to the
end. If you feel that you are too involved with the work to divorce your feelings about it
and read it without undue bias, then by all means impose upon a friend, mentor or another
student to read through it for you. You would be surprised how often you overlook
information that went unsaid on paper because you were thinking of it in your head. Even
during this proofreading process, distance and time can help clear your head and you
need to take frequent breaks, even though you’ve “technically” finished the paper. Only
when you are truly and completely satisfied that you have connected all of your dots and
gotten all those proverbial ducks in their row, can you begin to package the finished
dissertation for presentation.

Professionalism – a key to great accomplishments

Of course, the manner in which you present the work will depend upon the type of study
you’ve done, along with such details as the number of pages, any graphics or artwork,
including photographs that are part of the finished product. Bearing this in mind, the
more meticulous and professional looking the final package, the better first impression it
will make upon those whose opinions really matter. Neatly typed and double-spaced
pages, with standard margins and spacing are required of all research works submitted to
a professor at any institute of higher learning. You need to double check and ascertain
that all of your sources have been properly cited and your own personal information is
included in the proper portion of the paper. Your finished dissertation should look like a
professionally written treatise on a particular subject whose author is an expert in that
field. It should appear like a manuscript whose purpose is to be kept and used for study
by future students. Who knows? If your dissertation achieves the goals you have set for it
and demonstrates your capability at this highest of levels in your field, it may just well
become one.

Words of commendation and encouragement

Congratulations! You have just written what may stand alone in your career as your
greatest academic effort and through it, you have achieved the highest degree of
academic honor that can be conferred upon someone in your field. If I seem a bit
presumptuous in congratulating you now, know that I do so because whether you’ve
submitted your dissertation already or you are only in the beginning stages, I know that if
you stick to the basics and use the knowledge that you have already gleaned in
conjunction with your passion to continue your studies, your dissertation will doubtlessly
achieve its purpose. You will have surpassed the many and become one of the few in who
reach this apex in their studies. Your dissertation will forever set you apart as a scholar
whose education and passion to learn have earned the most coveted degrees. And, having
accomplished this once-daunting goal, you will soon be able to sign your name with a
couple of very important letters in front of it.
