TOPIC: Measurement

SUB-TOPIC: Clock – Match Clock

HENLIE BIN HAJI OSMAN – 10D0008

LECTURER

DR LEONG
Question: Choose one topic either from Geometry, Measurement or Data analysis &
Probability.

The lesson will contents Topic, Year/Grade, Specific Objective, Learning Outcome, step by
step and add another plan if No network and computer break down.

Date of submission is after Semester Break (Week 9)

Topic: Measurement – Clock (Match Clock)

Year/Grade: 5

Specific Objective:

1) Distinguish between Face (analog) clock and Digital Clock.

2) Understand the numbers are used in describing the passage of time.

3) Match the time display link between the Face Clock and Digital Clock.

Learning Outcome:

Learn and understand to recognize minute and hour on both face (analog) and digital clocks.
These lessons will contents on topic Measurement and sub-topic is match clock which chosen
by Dr Leong for my next lesson as homework during the lecture on 24th August 2010. The lesson
divided into two teaching methods. There are:

1. Using computer and network (internet). Students can go to Virtual manipulative link:
http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/category_g_2_t_4.html.

2. Manual teaching if no network or computer breakdown.

Introduction using Virtual manipulative Website:

The Clock manipulative allows the students control the hands of the Face Clock (analog Clock)
and also can control the time display in Digital Clock by using click the Up and Down buttons
“hour (hr)” and “Minutes (min)” provided. This is because of the linking possible between the
Face Clock and the Digital Clock, this manipulative can help students to tell time with the two
styles of clocks they are most likely to encounter.

Students make the time displayed on one clock match the time shown on the other clock depend

on the problem given. If the Red Arrow target to Face Clock, that mean students need to
make match time displayed in the Face clock to Digital Clock but if the Red Arrow target to
Digital clock, students need to make match time display in Digital Clock to Face Clock. Student

can check their answer by click before going on to the next problem.
REMEMBER: if the answer is wrong given by student, student still can change the answer until
to get match time displayed.

Basic Practice:

Before we start to teach this Virtual manipulative to our students, we should explain the methods
of add and subtract time to students. Add and Subtract time is another measurement skill that
students should know. Using the method of add and Subtract time, students become more
confident with the operations of the clocks.

Easy example: What are 2:45 + 1:10?

Add the Hours: 2+1 = 3

Add the Minutes: 45+10 = 55
the minutes are ok, so the answer is 3:55

Hard example: What are 2:45 + 1:20?

Add the Hours: 2+1 = 3

Add the Minutes: 45+20 = 65
The minutes are 60 or more, so subtract 60 from minutes (65-60 = 5 Minutes) and add 1 to Hours
(3+1 = 4 Hours) ... so the answer is 4:05

Easy example: What is 4:10 - 1:05?

Subtract the Hours: 4-1 = 3

Subtract the Minutes: 10-5 = 5
the minutes are fine, so the answer is 3:05

Hard example: What is 4:10 - 1:35?

Subtract the Hours: 4-1 = 3

Subtract the Minutes: 10-35 = -25
the minutes are less than 0, so add 60 to Minutes (-25+60 = 60-25 = 35 Minutes) and subtract 1
from Hours (3-1 = 2 Hours) ... answer is 2:35
With the Clock manipulative, students can easily to move the hands of the Face Clock fifteen
minutes ahead or twenty minutes back or to make similar adjustments to the Digital Clock.
Students should know how to use a short hand show the Hours and Long hand show the Minutes.

The Short Hand shows the Hours:

2 Hours   5 Hours

The Long Hand shows the Minutes:

30 Minutes
  15 Minutes
or Half-Past

For the Clock manipulative, students only match the time given either using Face clock or
Digital Clock. To change the time in the Face Clock, students can click on either the hour or the
minute hand and drag it to the right or desired position. To change the time in the Digital Clock,
students can click on the up arrow button (time moves forward, "later") and down arrow

button (time moves "earlier") for hours, minutes, or seconds.

Practice:

For this problem, the time displayed in Face Clock is 2.25 pm as shown above. According the
question given, students must match the time display in Face Clock into Digital Clock by
clicking the Up and down buttons.

Wrong answer given by student:

The picture below has shown the answer from student.

Student can click “Check Answer” button to show the answer is right or wrong. Since, the
answer given by student is wrong. The program will display the word “Try Again” with spring
sound. Even thought, the answer given by student is wrong. Student still can change the time
display in Digital Clock and match the time with time display at Face Clock.

Right answer given by student:

The picture below has shown the answer from student.

When student click “check answer” button, the program will display the word “Correct” with bill
sound. Students can try more questions given if press “New Problem” button.

Another Practice:
For this problem, student need match the time display in Digital Clock became using Face Clock.
The time display in digital clock is 11.25 am as shown picture above. According the question
given, student must match the time display in Digital clock into Face Clock by clicking on either
the hour or minute hand and dragging it to right position.

Wrong and Right answer given by student:

The process of program is similar with previous practice. If the answer is wrong as shown
picture above. The program will display the word “Try Again” with spring sound. But
remember, student still can change the time display at Face clock by click and drag hands (short
and long hand). If the answer is right given by student as shown picture below, the program will
display the word “Correct” with bill sound.
Teaching without Computer or internet access

For this type of teaching, teacher need bring the real Face clock (analog) and Digital clock to
school and display/show to students during the lesson example picture as shown below. Using
this way, students can distinguish between Face clock and Digital clock.

Students also need to learn the basic how to use clock either using face clock or digital clock.
Students should know the method of add and subtract time using Digital clock and also
understand how to use a Short hand show the Hours and Long hand show the Minutes in Face
clock.

During the lesson, teacher can give short activity to students in 15 minutes. The activities are:

1. Ask student one-by-one to go in front of Whiteboard and write down the answer where
the question given about match time display in Face clock to Digital Clock.

2. Teacher gives question about match time display in Digital clock to Face Clock. Teacher
write down the Digital time display on whiteboard and students will try matching the
time display from Digital clock to Face clock provided by teacher.

Before close the lesson, teacher can give two simple exercises to students in 15 minutes. There
are:

1. Exercise 1 is about match time display in Face clock to Digital Clock. (Appendix 1)
2. Exercise 2 is about match time display in Digital clock to Face Clock. (Appendix 2)
