Unit 6 Language Focus A

Instructions

1 Divide the class into pairs.

2 Hand out one Student A sheet and one Student B sheet to each pair.
3 Draw some simple pictures on the board (a banana, 2 apples, some water). Ask
the class Is there a biscuit? and write it on the board. Elicit the answer No, there isn’t.
and write it on the board. Continue asking Is there a banana? Are there any carrots? Is
there any cheese? Is there any water?
4 Now get the students to ask you similar questions. If necessary remind them of
the rules for the use of countable and uncountable nouns.
5 Tell the class to write the questions in exercise 1. If necessary, write them on the
board.
6 Ask them to look at their pictures and answer the questions they have written.
Make sure they write complete short answers, not just yes or no.
7 Now tell the students to ask their partners about their pictures and to write
their answers. Again they must use complete short answers.
8 When they have finished, go over the exercise with the whole class asking
questions like Santi, is there any cheese in your picture?

Follow-up activities

1 Get students to write a paragraph about their picture beginning with In my picture,
there is . There isn’t .
2 Bring in a bag full of things you want to teach or revise or their pictures.
Students have to guess what you’ve got in your bag asking questions like Is there
an apple? If they ask you correctly they get the picture or object. You may also
want to divide the class into two and treat it as a competition.
3 Get students to write about their homes beginning In my bedroom, there is ... In the
kitchen, there is ...
