INTRODUCTION:

“The only vital value an enterprise has is the experience, skills,


innovativeness and insights of its people1

Human Resource Management (HRM) is the function within an organization


which refers to the management of people within corporations. In this age of
fast pace information and constantly changing technology, people have
realized correctly that the true competitive advantage that a company can
possess is through its most valuable asset: “its human resource”.

Human Resource encompasses everything to do from selecting, hiring,


motivating, understanding, training and even making sure that the employee
is content enough with his work that his efficiency and productivity are
optimal.

WARID HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT:

During my interview, even before I started my internship I found out the 4


main sub-divisions in the HR department of Warid Telecom, which are listed
below:

1. Recruitment and Selection Division


2. Training Division
3. Compensation and Benefits Division
4. Organizational Development Division

Some of the basic functions that the HR department performs include


recruitment, Interviews, trainings, orientations, career development,
Management and usage of HRIS like oracle which is currently being used by
Warid, Record keeping and the timely issuance of these records, Dealing
with status change, grievance, resignations, medical and expense claims of
employees, handling and managing smooth pay roll operations every month,
Provident fund and Gratuity management, payroll taxation, Leave and
transfer management etc

The above listed are not the complete functions that are performed by the
HR department at Warid. In addition to the above mentioned functions, other

various tasks and operations are executed to accomplish the primary
objective of Human resource, the gist of which is to establish, develop,
maintain, and communicate and disseminate the policies throughout the
entire company and to help, advise and look after the employees of WARID
while making sure the company interests are kept in mind.

MY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

During my 4 week internship period at Warid Telecom I was given tasks and
responsibilities mainly on the basis of a pre designed work plan. Some of the
major tasks that I performed are as under:

1. Managed documentation and various correspondence files


2. Updated the existing data records
3. Processed the OPD medical, dental and hospitalization claims which
are part of the monthly payroll
4. Contacted employees and dealt with errors etc in their medical claims
5. Assisted in making and compiled new hire profiles for new hired
employees as well as interns
6. Handled the TOR applications for the request of blackberry device,
giving them priority numbers and keeping record as per the priority
number
7. Changed the format, language, images and clip art for the orientation
presentation of 2010
8. Assisted in the preparation and organization of the above mentioned
orientation programme
9. Formatted and helped in making the invitations for orientation via
email
10. Created and Developed a new catalog system for the proper and
efficient management and upkeep of the Box files and the paper data
possessed
11. Made a video in Windows movie maker on the Employee
Recreational activities at WARID which is to be used by WARID north.
12. I was responsible for the daily dispatch of post and keep and
maintaining record
13. Stationary issuance was also part of my responsibilities

14. Drafted few offer and appointment letters for the internees and
employees that were hired
15. Resume Management was also one of the tasks that I performed
16. Scanning of all documents and maintaining a record as a soft
copy
17. Short listed candidates for a CS Peshawar position from external &
internal candidates
MY LEARNING AT WARID:

The reason why any renowned university considers an internship to be a


mandatory part of any students’ education is the experience gained by
working in an actual professional work environment. Working in Warid I truly
realized the reasoning behind this concept.
Though I worked at Warid Telecom for four weeks yet I believe that I gained
a lot from this short tenure. The environment itself is very instructive. Other
than the tasks which were formally assigned to me, the small tasks like
scanning documents, making hire profiles etc taught me how various
processes work. At Warid, human resource planning, which ensures that
personnel needs are met appropriately and constantly, is met quite
efficiently with the help of a software Help desk where employees have the
ability to raise tickets regarding their concerns, queries and issues. As an
internee I was told in the beginning of my internship tenure that the learning
experience would be high paced and indeed it was. The various tasks that I
performed not only taught me most of the basic things but also showed me
some part of the bigger picture as well.
Designing the orientation and assisting in planning and organizing it, in its
initial phase, I learned the demands of the corporate sector. There are
checks and double checks at every step of the process. I learned that HR is
not only about the processes, the records and the procedures but also
includes major responsibilities of relationship management. Being in the HR
department you need to be able to judge every employee, know the patterns

that he/she follows etc. Among the other things I learned at Warid, one main
thing that I believe was a vital experience for me was the constant
expectations and the high level of results that was expected from me. It
taught me to at least try to meet that high bar of tasks and even if I didn’t
the response was always supportive.
I believe that this experience truly did teach me how the wheels of a big
organization run and my experience at Warid will help me meet most of the
future challenges of my professional career.
