FADE IN

EXT. BLACK SKY. NIGHT

We fade in to a shot of the night sky. Slowly stars begin to
dissolve into shot. We then start to hear opening narration
from a young girl.
ANNA BROOKS
When I was young my dad used to
tell me stories about the stars. I
remember him telling me how the
stars in the night sky were no
longer there. He explained that
they were just suns which had burnt
out millions of years ago. All we
can see is the light from them
which has traveled millions of
miles across the solar system to
us. By the time it has reached us
all the stars have already died.
Now when I look up at the stars all
I see are ghosts forever haunting a
mass graveyard in the sky. I can no
longer look at them and see the
beauty which I once could. I’ve
tried explaining this to other
people, but no-one understands me.
No-one has ever really understood
me, not like he would.
DISSOLVE IN:

INT. CAR. NIGHT

We open with a shot through a moving car’s windscreen,
looking out onto the road ahead. It travels through the
night, moving down winding country roads, its headlights
illuminating the way ahead. It is a dark and stormy night.
Wind and rain battle against the windscreen. The credits
begin to roll over these images.
ANY MINUTE NOW

The credits finish.

CUT TO:
2.

EXT. HOUSE. NIGHT

The car pulls up outside a country house. A large tree bays
in the stormy night air. The house appears empty, but
suddenly the front light flickers on. Out steps a middle
aged woman. This is Jennifer. She moves over towards the
car.
The camera remains static and her conversation to the driver
cannot be heard above the stormy night. The driver exits
first. She is also middle aged, roughly the same as the lady
from the house. This is Nicole, she and Jennifer are
sisters. Jennifer returns inside the house. Nicole moves to
the back of the car and gets out a suitcase before returning
to the drivers side. She bends down and talks to the
passenger.
CUT TO:

INT. CAR. NIGHT

NICOLE BROOKS
Come on sweetheart?
Anna, the passenger, looks forward out of the windscreen.
She is Nicole’s daughter. She replies with a sigh.

ANNA BROOKS
If I must.
CUT TO:

EXT. HOUSE. NIGHT

We cut back to the static camera view. Anna exits the car.
She moves round to her mother. We cut to a closer shot of
the two of them as the rain continues to fall.
NICOLE BROOKS
You will be good for your aunt
won’t you?

Anna doesn’t answer.

NICOLE BROOKS
Look darling, I’m sorry you have to
stay here for a couple of weeks. If
I had a choice... It’s just until
everything is sorted back home I
promise.
Anna doesn’t answer

NICOLE BROOKS
(pleading)
I promise I’ll phone every day.
Anna still doesn’t answer.

NICOLE BROOKS
Darling you know your father and I
still love you very much don’t you?
Nicole leans in and hugs Anna hard before kissing her on of
the cheek and rubbing her hair from her face.
ANNA BROOKS
Can I go inside now mum? I’m
getting soaked to the bone out
here.

NICOLE BROOKS
Course you can darling.
Jennifer re-appears through the front door. Anna pushes past
her and goes inside. Nicole looks at her daughter adoringly
and with sympathy. Nicole and Jennifer start to talk.
CUT TO:

INT. HOUSE. NIGHT

Anna enters the house by herself, whilst her mum and aunt
continue to talk outside. She shivers in her wet clothes.
She begins to look around the hallway. She looks up and down
the walls, observing the Victorian dark red wallpaper. She
looks closely at the various objects and pictures attached
to these walls.
There are framed taxidermied animals such as butterflies and
spiders, along with the usual array of pictures. Whilst
looking around at these she sees into the living room. Sat
in an armchair, reading a book, is her uncle David. He looks
up at her and, without saying a word, looks back down at his
book.
ANNA BROOKS
(mumbling)
Nice to see you two.
Anna continues to stand around, feeling slightly awkward and
uncomfortable. Jennifer then enters into the hallway, Nicole
has already left.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
So, I guess you’re going to be
staying with us for a while then?
Anna just silently nods her head.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Well, you’d better get out of those
wet clothes, before you catch your
death. Have you eaten yet?

ANNA BROOKS
No.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
No, I don’t suppose you would have.
It’s a long drive. I could do you
some Ox-tail soup.
ANNA BROOKS
I don’t really eat meat.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
(Displeased)
You’re not one of those are you?
Well, I’m sure I can fix you
something.
Anna nods.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
You’ll be staying in the room
upstairs on the right. The bathroom
is up on the left. Don’t use too
much hot water though, the tank
makes an awful racket at night. God
knows why. Anyway you don’t want to
disturb the neighbors do you?
ANNA BROOKS
I suppose not.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Off you go then.
Jennifer hands Anna her suitcase. Anna, still feeling a
little out of place, smiles and takes it from her, before
ascending the stairs.
CUT TO:
5.

INT. BEDROOM. NIGHT

Anna enters the bedroom. She sits down on the bed and places
her suitcase next to her. She looks around the room.
Everything is very old fashioned. She starts to unpack a few
of her items.

She takes out her digital camera. She turns it around so

that she can photograph her own sad looking face. She takes
a picture, before placing it down on her bed. She then
removes her dressing gown from her suitcase, before leaving
the room.
TIME CUT TO:

INT. LIVING ROOM. NIGHT

It is a few minutes later. David is still sat in the same

chair, reading the same book. Anna enters the room. He looks
up at her. She smiles at him.
DAVID COLLINGWOOD
Evening.
ANNA BROOKS
Hi.
David then returns to reading his book. Anna sits down on
the settee. Jennifer then enters the room holding a tray on
which is a bowl of soup and a couple slices of bread. She
hands Anna the tray.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
We don’t normally eat food away
from the table.
Anna takes the tray.
ANNA BROOKS
Thanks.
Anna starts to eat the soup. Jennifer sits down next to her
husband.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
So, they’ve decided to call it a
day then have they?
Anna doesn’t answer. She continues to eat her soup.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
After all these years....my sister
and your father have decided that
they’d be better apart. Well, I
can’t say I’m surprised. The last
couple of years have been
particularly rocky. What with his
new job and all. They hardly ever
saw each other.

David nods from his chair half listening to what his wife
has to say.
ANNA BROOKS
They could still work things out.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Your mother seemed pretty sure it
was all over last night.
ANNA BROOKS
Can we not talk about it.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Sorry, I don’t mean to go on. I was
just saying..

ANNA BROOKS
Well don’t.
Jennifer is a little stunned by Anna’s sudden retort. She
decides to ignore it and change the subject.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Anyway, hows everything with you?
Hows your, you know, disease?
ANNA BROOKS
It’s not a disease, it’s an illness
you can’t catch it!
DAVID COLLINGWOOD
She didn’t mean anything by it.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
I was talking to your mother about
it and she said that you’re now on
some new medication. I’ve got to
make sure that you take it
everyday. After all, we don’t want
a relapse.
Anna looks annoyed by her aunts words.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
David and I have managed to get you
into the local school. It wasn’t
easy at such short notice, but
they’ll take you on whilst you’re
staying here.
David puts his book down.
DAVID COLLINGWOOD
and You had better not act up like
you did at St Martins. We know the
people at St Edwards on a personal
level.
ANNA BROOKS
It’s not my fault. I can’t help it.

DAVID COLLINGWOOD
Well let’s all hope your new
medication manages to keep you
under control this time.

Before Anna can answer back David picks his book back up and
continues reading. Anna goes back to finishing off her meal
holding back the tears of the situations he has found
herself in.
CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM. NIGHT

Anna re-enters her bedroom. The storm is still raging
outside. She moves over to the window to look at it outside.
Suddenly the house emits a strange groaning sound. She puts
this down to the central heating and moves over to her bed.
She gets in and pulls the covers over her face.
CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM. DAY

Anna awakes. She rubs the sleep from her eyes. She gets out
of bed and goes to leave the room. As she does she notices
that a few objects have been moved from a shelf. She
automatically puts them back and goes to leave the room. She
then stops and returns to the look at the objects a little
more carefully.
CUT TO:
8.

EXT. HOUSE. DAY

Anna is stood outside, waiting to be led to the new school.
She is dressed in a school uniform, with her old school bag
over her shoulder. She holds a note book and few of her old
text books from her previous school in her hands. She looks
at the large Yew tree. Jennifer meets her by the tree.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Morning. Are you ready for your
first day?

ANNA BROOKS
I guess.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Did you sleep well?

ANNA BROOKS
Kind of.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
You’re not the most talkative
person in the world are you?
ANNA BROOKS
I’m just not used to sudden change.
I need a little time to adjust...to
settle in.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Come on, you don’t want to be late
on your first day.
Together they start to walk down the gravel path and away
from house.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
How do you find your new uniform?
Does it fit o.k?

ANNA BROOKS
It’s a little itchy.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
We only managed to get it at short
notice you should be grateful!
The look on Jennifer’s face says it all.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Was the room up to your standards?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 9.

ANNA BROOKS
It was fine.
(BEAT)
Although the tree outside kept me
awake throughout the storm.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Tree?
ANNA BROOKS
I think it was that large Yew tree
right outside my window. It kept
scraping against the glass.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
I think you’re mistaken.

ANNA BROOKS
Why?
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
That tree couldn’t possibly reach
your bedroom window. It’s way too
far back.
ANNA BROOKS
I definitely heard something.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Are you sure? It was probably just
in your head.
ANNA BROOKS
I don’t think so....it sounded so
real.
Jennifer stops walking and so does Anna. Jennifer turns
towards Anna.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Look Anna, that tree can’t reach
your window. I think I know my own
house. It wouldn’t be the first
time you’ve had a hallucination now
would it? Your mind has an
overactive imagination.
Anna looks to the ground.
ANNA BROOKS
I guess.

Together they start to walk again, before walking out of

shot.
CUT TO:

EXT. ST EDWARDS. DAY

They reach the gates of St Edwards.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Here we are then. You’re in Mr
Phillips class. Room 16. He knows
about your disease.
Anna recoils at the use of this word.

ANNA BROOKS
It isn’t a disease.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
I know but people have the right to
know. He’s promised not to bring it
up in front of the other pupils.
ANNA BROOKS
Good.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
I can’t walk you home later
I’m busy this evening.
Anna nods.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
(smugly)
Although I’m sure a girl of your
intelligence can find her way home!
ANNA BROOKS
I’m sure I’ll be fine.
Anna looks at the schools entrance. Jennifer feels just a
twinge of compassion.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Come on, in you go It’s a friendly
school they’re used to newcomers.
Jennifer kisses Anna on the cheek and starts to walk out of
shot.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
I’ll be home by six.

Anna looks once again at the school, she sighs to herself

before walking in.

INT. ST EDWARDS. DAY

Anna slowly makes her way down the corridor. She looks at
the door numbers trying to located number 16. She nervously
holds her note book in her hands, clutching it towards her
chest. Some boys rush past her, one knocks into her but
doesn’t pause to apologise. Anna recoils. She continues
onwards until she find her room.

INT. ROOM 16, ST EDWARDS. DAY

The class are already in the room, sitting down at their
desks. They all turn to look at Anna.

LAURENCE PHILLIPS
Good morning. You must be Anna.
Your aunt said you’d be joining us
today.

ANNA BROOKS
Hello.
Laurence turns towards the rest of the class.
LAURENCE PHILLIPS
Everyone this is Anna. She’s moved
to the area for a little while and
will be joining us for a few weeks.
I want you all to make her feel
welcome.

He turns back towards Anna.

LAURENCE PHILLIPS
Here, you better have this.

Laurence hands her a sheet of paper.

LAURENCE PHILLIPS
It’s your timetable for the day.
We’re still having your full week
one printed up as we don’t really
know where to put you yet.
Anna stands there and stares at the paper. She looks back up
at Laurence, who is still starring at her.

LAURENCE PHILLIPS
Well do take a seat.
Anna slowly makes her way across the classroom. She see’s an
empty seat next to a young girl.

ANNA BROOKS
May I sit next to you?
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Sure.

Anna sits down.

ANNA BROOKS
Hi I’m Anna

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Abi. Whereabouts are you living?
ANNA BROOKS
I’m staying with my aunt and uncle,
the Collingwoods. Do you know them?

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Kind of.
ANNA BROOKS
I only moved down yesterday. I
don’t really know my way around
yet.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Don’t worry, I’ll look after you.

Anna smiles.
Laurence starts to teach the class. He writes on the
blackboard.
Anna looks around the room. She looks at the other students
all of whom intently watch Mr Phillips. She then see’s an
attractive boy. He looks away from the teacher and at her.
Their eyes meet for a second. Anna quickly turns away and
back towards Mr Phillips.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. DINNING HALL, ST EDWARDS. DAY

It is lunch time. Anna and Abi sit at a table together with
their lunch trays. A young girl approaches Abi.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
Hey.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Hi Lydia. How you doing?

LYDIA CAULFIELD
Pretty good.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
This is my new fiend, Anna.

Lydia turns towards Anna.

LYDIA CAULFIELD
Hey Anna
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
She’s staying in our little town
for a while. Living with the
Collingwoods.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
The who?

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
The Collingwoods. You probably
don’t know them.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
Cool.
Lydia then turns back towards Abigail.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
We just had Mr Baxter cover our
Biology lesson.
Lydia sits down next to Abigail.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
and?
LYDIA CAULFIELD
We’re doing sex education. It was
so funny. He didn’t have a clue
what to do. Mr Davies had just left
him some covering notes. Baxter

didn’t know how to cover the
subject so he ended up just showing
us a video, which only ran to an
hour. Jimmy Jones reckons Baxter
probably hasn’t even ever done it,
still a virgin.
Anna and Abi are giggling to the gossip.
LYDIA CAUFIELD
Anyway after the video finished we
still had 45 minutes left all the
boys were pretending to hump each
other Jimmy Jones was humping
Baxters table leg. It was so
embarrassing. Baxter just fumbled
through his notes, before letting
everyone leave really early. He
didn’t give us homework or
anything.
Lydia laughs. She turns towards Anna.

LYDIA CAULFIELD
Have you had a class yet with Mr
Baxter?

ANNA BROOKS
No, only Mr Phillips.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
Shame. He’s so funny. He doesn’t
know what he’s talking about half
the time, they call him Baxter the
Ballbag.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
What lesson have you got next?

ANNA BROOKS
I think it’s maths.
(BEAT)
ANNA BROOKS
It’s in room 35, whatever it is.

LYDIA CAULFIELD
Oh God. If it is, you’ll be with
Miss Briggs. She’s such a witch,
just awful. She’s always putting
people on the spot with difficult
questions, normally algebra

properly then she gets so angry
when you don’t understand any of
it. I hope for your sake it isn’t
maths.
ANNA BROOKS
I think I’ll just check.

Anna reaches down to pick up her timetable sheet which is

laying on top of her bag. As she does so a metal bracelet
slides down her arm to her wrist. Lydia, who has leaned
forward to watch Anna pick up the paper, notices this.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
What kind of bracelet is that?
Anna lifts up her arm and rolls down her sleeve. She looks
at the bracelet.
ANNA BROOKS
It’s medical.
Each girl looks at Anna with the desire to ask her what for,
but each stays silent so as not to appear rude. Anna answers
the question for them.

ANNA BROOKS
I’m Narcoleptic.
Lydia looks at Abigail then back towards Anna.

LYDIA CAULFIELD
What does that mean?
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
It means she keeps falling a sleep.

Lydia once again looks at Abigail.

LYDIA CAUFIELD
How the hell did you know that?
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
I saw a documentary on it
Lydia turns back to Anna.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
So you’re tired all the time?

ANNA BROOKS
Kind of.
LYDIA CAUFIELD
Wow I’ve never met a Narcoleptic
before

Abi shakes her head disapprovingly.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Anna has no control about when she
falls asleep?
ANNA BROOKS
That’s about right.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
So you could just fall asleep like
right now?
ANNA BROOKS
I hope not.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Medication controls it Lydia
ANNA BROOKS
It’s meant to. I’m on these new
tablets that are supposed
to stimulate my central nervous
system with amphetamines or
something. I don’t really
understand it all the doctors just
spew all these confusing words at
me and I just nod and pretend to
understand.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
What happened with your old
medication?

ANNA BROOKS
It just stopped working about a
year or so back.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
What happened when it stopped
working? Did you suddenly fall
asleep like in a coma?
ANNA BROOKS
Er...not really. When it first
started to stop working I just

started feeling really heavy headed
and would sleep in for a lot longer
than usual each morning.

(BEAT)
ANNA BROOKS
Then I would start sleepwalking.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
(laughing)
How embarrassing. Did you ever walk
around naked?
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Lydia!

ANNA BROOKS
I hope not. No-one ever saw me.. as
far as I’m aware anyway.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
How did you know that you’d been
sleepwalking? I mean, if no-one had
seen you or anything?
ANNA BROOKS
I used to wake up in strange parts
of the house. I’d go to sleep in my
room, then wake up a couple of
hours later downstairs on the
living room couch. Other times I’d
have weird, scary dreams. One time
I thought the house was burning
down and tried climbing out of my
bedroom window. Luckily I woke
myself up before I jumped out.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
It sounds like you were possessed.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Lydia none of this is funny! Have
you ever hurt yourself Anna when
you’ve been sleepwalking?

ANNA BROOKS
A couple of times, nothing serious
just a few cuts and bruises.

LYDIA CAULFIELD
So you’ve never fallen asleep and
dropped down a flight of stairs or
anything?
Anna shakes her head at the stupid questions Lydia keeps
asking.
ANNA BROOKS
Luckily not! Although I did fall
into a road once. Luckily nothing
was coming and a man pulled me out
onto the pavement.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
Was he fit?
ANNA BROOKS
What?
LYDIA CAULFIELD
The man was he fit?
ANNA BROOKS
He was about sixty
LYDIA CAULFIELD
Oh
ANNA BROOKS
That’s not the scariest part of the
illness.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
What is?
ANNA BROOKS
I used to get these hallucinations.

LYDIA CAULFIELD
’What’ hallucinations?
ANNA BROOKS
These horrible visions. Like I’d be
completely awake, but have these
visions as if I were still asleep.
It was like the part of my brain
which works when your asleep was
working when I was awake. I’d see
all kinds of strange and terrifying
things.
Lydia and Abigail both lean forward a little. Anna pauses.

ANNA BROOKS
I....I really can’t remember.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
You must remember something?

ANNA BROOKS
Well....
Anna brushes her fingers through her hair. As she brings her
hand back down she accidentally knocks her fork onto the
floor the other two girls jump.
ANNA BROOKS
Whoops..butterfingers.
Anna bends down to retrieve the fork. She goes to put it
back onto her plate but Lydia stops her.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
Seriously...I really wouldn’t use
anything which had fallen on this
floor. I’m pretty sure dinosaurs
were still roaming the earth the
last time it was cleaned.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
I’ll get you another one.

Abigail goes to stand up, but Anna stands up first.

ANNA BROOKS
Thanks for the offer....but
I’m capable of getting myself
another fork.

Anna smiles. Abigail sits back down. Anna turns and walks
over to edge of the canteen.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
I like her, she’s odd
Anna arrives at a table where the spare cutlery is kept. She
picks up a new fork and turns to walk back.
As she turns around the walk back when she see’s the boy
from the classroom standing in front of her. His entire
shirt is covered in RED tomato sauce.
Anna takes one look at him and bursts out laughing. He just
stands there looking a little annoyed before speaking.

accident. Did mummy not teach you
how to eat with a fork.

She laughs again before taking her camera out of her pocket.
ANNA BROOKS
Do you mind? I have to take a photo
of this.

Josh just smiles as Anna takes a picture.

Josh starts wipes the tomato sauce off himself.
JOSH ROBERTS
You’re names Anna yea?

Anna looks slightly taken back.

ANNA BROOKS
How did you guess that?

JOSH ROBERTS
You were in my class this morning.
ANNA BROOKS
Was I?

JOSH ROBERTS
Yeah. I saw you looking at me.
Anna feels slightly embarrassed.
ANNA BROOKS
I was looking at everyone in the
class.
JOSH ROBERTS
Well you seemed to pay particular
attention to me.
ANNA BROOKS
I wasn’t.
Josh sarcastically brushes off the remark.

Anna pushes past Josh and out of shot. Josh turns to watch
her walk away.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. STREET. DAY

Anna is walking back to her aunts house with Abigail. They

move along the pavement as they talk. Anna is still holding
her notebook as before.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
So....do you like it?

ANNA BROOKS
Like what?...St Edwards? It’s
alright. Much bigger than the
school I attend back home.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
What do you think of the rest of
the town?
ANNA BROOKS
I only arrived last night. I
haven’t had much of a chance to
look around.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
I could show you round if you like?
Although there isn’t much the place
has to offer.
Anna laughs.
ANNA BROOKS
There’s nothing to do round here
then?

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Not really, apart from the beach.
Although it’s mostly made up of
stones, if you look hard enough
there’s a couple of feet of sand.

Both girls giggle.

ANNA BROOKS
Your really selling the place.
(BEAT)
If I’m honest, I quite like small
quiet towns. I’m not much of a
party animal.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
That’s something we will have to
change.
ANNA BROOKS
Seriously, I’m happy that way.
They stop walking at the foot of The Collingwoods gravel
drive.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Listen, my parents are away for the
week so I may be having a small
gathering tonight, just a few
friends. Do you fancy joining us?
Anna shakes her head.
ANNA BROOKS
No, it’s alright. I think I’ll
pass.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Come on spoil sport. It’ll be fun.
Plus it’ll be a great way for you
to meet some of the others from
school. Help you fit in.
ANNA BROOKS
I’ll think about it.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Well If you don’t turn up I’ll have
to come round here and drag you
there myself.....I know where you
live Miss Brooks.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Not far...it’s literally just
around the corner. Well round the
corner and then straight on for
another mile and a half.
ANNA BROOKS
Why don’t you get a lift home?

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
My mum doesn’t get back from work
for another hour and my dads a
raving alcoholic, its best not to
hitch a ride with him if you wanna
see your 18th birthday.
Abigail smiles at Anna. Anna can’t quite work out if she is
being sarcastic with this last remark or in fact telling the
truth. She just smiles an awkward smile back.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Anyway, the walk does me good,
helps keep me in shape. I like to
be slim.
Abigail twirls around like a model.

ANNA BROOKS
Cool. I’d better let you go Kate
Moss...seeing as you have many more
miles left to trek.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Are we walking in together
tomorrow?
ANNA BROOKS
My aunt will probably want to walk
me in. It would probably be a bit
awkward with the three of us..she’s
not the most joyful of people.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
That’s cool. I’ll definitely be
seeing you later though yea?
Anna shrugs.

EXT. HOUSE. DAY

Anna starts to walk up her aunts gravel drive when she
suddenly notices someone in the distance. A man who she has
never seen before is standing next to the large Yew tree. He
is wearing old fashioned clothes and just stands there,
starring at Anna. Anna feels uncomfortable and looks at the
ground. She continues walking up the gravel drive. When she
looks up again he is still stood there, but he then quickly
moves behind the Yew tree. She makes her way to the Yew
tree. As she reaches the Yew tree he has mysteriously gone.
Slightly startled she moves around the Tree looking for him.
She then surveys the garden to see where he may have moved
too. But once again, he has disappeared. Slightly shaken she
stands for a while by the tree, before moving away and into
the house.

INT. HOUSE. DAY

Anna enters into the hallway. All is silent in the house.
Anna looks into the living room for anyone, but it is empty.
She moves into the kitchen. On the side is a note from her
aunt. She picks it up. It reads.
Anna

Will be back late. Could you go to the convenience shop in

town and pick up some items we need (see list behind.)
Money’s on the side.
See you later

Jenny
Anna puts the note back down on the side and picks up the
list and money. She looks through the list of items before
putting it into her pocket along with the money. She then
leaves the kitchen.

CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM. DAY

Anna enters the bedroom. She picks up her laptop bag and
sits down on the bed. She takes the laptop out and puts it
on the bed. Whilst it loads up she moves over to her school
bag and gets out her digital camera. Returning to the bed
she plugs it in and starts to upload her photos. Whilst they
upload she moves over to the corner of her room and gets
changed out of her school uniform and into her regular
clothes.
The camera remains focused on both her, on the right hand
side of the screen and the laptop screen on the left. The
images she took today start to flash up. Then various images
of her room appear. These images have been taken at night
and all appear to show a view looking down her bed. Then one
image flashes up of the same view, but this time a small boy
is stood at the end of her bed. The image last no longer
than the others.

Anna moves back round to the bed and starts to look through
all the photos. She smiles at the pictures she took, before
coming across the ones in her bedroom. She looks through the
images with a sense of confusion. As she flicks through all
of them the picture with the boy in is no longer there. The
house makes a loud creaking sound which startles Anna. She
suddenly looks up from the screen. She turns the laptop off
and puts it back down on her bed. She then leaves the room.
CUT TO:

EXT. TOWN. DAY

Anna is walking down the high street. She looks at the shop
fronts in order find the convenience store. She comes across
the one which looks like the right place. She briefly pauses
to look through the shop window before heading on inside.
CUT TO:

INT. SHOP. DAY

Anna enters the shop and starts to look around. She takes
the list of items out and re-reads it. She then starts to
collect the various items. She see’s some cooking oil on the
bottom shelf. She crouches down to look at the different
varieties. She takes the money out of her pocket and counts
through it to see which one she can afford. She then gets

the feeling that she’s being watched. She turns around to

see Josh standing behind her.
JOSH ROBERTS
Alright down there?

Anna sighs at seeing who it is.

ANNA BROOKS
Are you stalking me or something?

JOSH ROBERTS
Well, technically, as I work here
it would seem that it’s you whose
stalking me.
ANNA BROOKS
You work here? Exciting.
JOSH ROBERTS
It’s a family business. Well sort
of.

ANNA BROOKS
What does that mean?
JOSH ROBERTS
Nothing. Look, what’s your problem
with me? Do you always form instant
opinions of people?
Anna stands up.
ANNA BROOKS
I’m sorry, it’s just me. It takes
me a while to get used to new
people and places.
JOSH ROBERTS
Shall we start again?

Anna nods.
JOSH ROBERTS
So what brings you to this shitty
little town then?

ANNA BROOKS
I’d rather not go into it right
now, not with someone I don’t
really know.

JOSH ROBERTS
That’s cool.
ANNA BROOKS
I’m staying with the Collingwoods
for a few weeks. Do you know them?

JOSH ROBERTS
My dad used to work with David many
years back at the steel plant,
before all the steel ran out and
they relocated it elsewhere.
ANNA BROOKS
I don’t really know much about my
uncles past. I’ve never been here
before.

JOSH ROBERTS
So first impressions?
ANNA BROOKS
I’ve never really been anywhere
where it feels like the whole world
has stopped spinning.
Josh laughs.
JOSH ROBERTS
We do have a nice beach?
ANNA BROOKS
Your the second person to say that
today.

JOSH ROBERTS
Say what?
ANNA BROOKS
The beach was the only good thing
Abi could say about this place.

JOSH ROBERTS
Abigail Hartford?
ANNA BROOKS
Yep.
JOSH ROBERTS
I saw you two sitting together in
the lunch hall.

And?

JOSH ROBERTS
She’s a total bitch!
ANNA BROOKS
She seems nice to me.

JOSH ROBERTS
It’s a long story.
ANNA BROOKS
An Ex?

JOSH ROBERTS
God no. Seriously. It’s not
important. She’s just not that
nice.
ANNA BROOKS
Everyone’s entitled to an opinion.
JOSH ROBERTS
I finish in about 20 minutes. Want
me to show you around that amazing
beach of ours?

ANNA BROOKS
Is that your way of asking me out
on a date Joshua?

JOSH ROBERTS
No no...I’m just trying to be
friendly. I like meeting new
people.
(BEAT)

JOSH ROBERTS
We don’t get many.
ANNA BROOKS
I don’t really fancy hanging around
here for twenty minutes, Can I just
meet you there?
Josh moves over to the shop window and points out of it.
JOSH ROBERTS
Beach is about a 5 minute walk that
way.
Anna holds up her items.

They move over to the counter. Josh scans and bags her
items.

JOSH ROBERTS
That’s £4.80.
ANNA BROOKS
Here.

Anna hands him a £5.00 note. She picks up the brown paper
bag and Josh hands her the change. He then walks her to the
door.
JOSH ROBERTS
See you in a bit then.
Anna nods.
ANNA BROOKS
Any particular part of the beach
you want me to wait for you by?
JOSH ROBERTS
Meet me at the base of the main
steps.

Josh smiles. A voice from the back of the shop suddenly cuts
through their conversation.
STEPHEN HILL (OS)
Josh! Will you stop talking and
come get these boxes down. You’re
still working you know!
ANNA BROOKS
I think your dad’s calling you.

JOSH ROBERTS
He’s not my dad?
ANNA BROOKS
Thought you said this was a family
business.

JOSH ROBERTS
He’s not my real dad.
STEPHEN HILL (OS)
Josh!

Josh walks out of shot. Anna leaves the shop.
CUT TO:

EXT. BEACH. DAY

Anna makes her way to the beach. She reaches the path at the
top of the cliffs. Shes stands at the top of the steps and
looks down towards the sand, stones and sea. She looks over
at the cliff tops and studies how they have been slowly
eroding over the years. As she watches them a few large
rocks break away and fall into the sea below.

She then makes her way down the stone steps and onto the
beach. Once there she starts to have a look around. She
looks into the rock pools and into the caves surrounding the
beach. She then finds a suitable place on the sand and sits
down, placing her brown paper bag next to her. She gazes out
into the sea, watching the waves crash against the
shoreline. She continues to sit there for a while,
occasionally turning round to look at the base of the stone
steps and for the appearance of Josh.
After a few moments more she decides to check the time. She
lifts her arm and looks at her wristwatch. When she looks
back out to the sea, however, she notices someone out
amongst the waves. After a few seconds of starring she
suddenly realises that the person is a small boy. She
quickly stands to her feet and attempts to call out. He
doesn’t respond. She starts to move at a steady pace towards
the shoreline. She stops and calls out again. He doesn’t
respond and continues remaining motionless.
Fearing he is in trouble she begins to wade out into the
sea. Slowly at first, shuddering as the cold water first
touches her skin, before quickening her pace. As she reaches
the boy she lurches forward in an attempt to grab hold of
him. Just as she has her arms around him a wave crashes
over, dragging them both under the water with the rip
current. Following on in one continuous shot she reemerges
to the surface still holding onto the boy. As she looks down
at him he has suddenly changed. She is now holding in her
arms a Grey, bald, cold corpse. Shocked, she lets go of him
and his body falls below the surface. She leans forward,
arms flailing frantically trying to find him again. He has
dissolved into the sea.

Still in shock, Anna stumbles backwards and falls down, with

her arms behind her, at the shoreline. Sitting there, she
stares out to the point where the boy vanished. She
continues staring for a while until a voice breaks the
silence.

JOSH ROBERTS
Anna!
Anna’s attention is suddenly broken away from the sea. She
turns around to see Josh rushing towards her. Anna quickens
to her feet and starts to move up the beach. She crosses
paths with Josh, who tries to speak to her, but she doesn’t
stop. Josh stands starring at Anna as she ascends the stone
steps off the beach.
CUT TO:

INT. HALLWAY, HOUSE. DAY

Anna enters the house, still soaking wet, through the front
door and into the hallway. She closes the door behind her.
She makes her way to the kitchen.
CUT TO:

INT. KITCHEN, HOUSE. DAY

Anna enters the kitchen before moving over to the kitchen

side. She picks up a glass container of her medication.
Still shaking, from the cold and shock, she tries to
haphazardly open the lid before promptly spilling its
contents. She picks up the pills from the side and the
floor, putting most of them back into the container and a
few into her hand. She then crouches down and opens the
fridge door below, retrieving a carton of orange juice. She
moves out of shot to get a glass leaving the fridge door
open.

The camera stays fixed on the open fridge. Inside we see a

few packages of meat, wrapped up in see through plastic
wrap. Anna returns to the fridge with a glass under her arm,
the pills in one hand and the orange juice in the other. She
puts the glass down on the kitchen side and pours in some of
the orange juice. She then swallows the pills and returns
the juice bottle before closing the fridge door. She
continues to stand for a few moments longer until she has
calmed down and stopped shaking so much. She then picks up
the glass container and starts to read the information about
her new medication.

INT. HALLWAY, HOUSE. DAY

Now in the hall in the bell rings again. Anna moves slowly
round the banister at the foot of the stairs and is about to
ascend when she hears a familiar voice call out.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
(O.S)
Hello. Anyone home?
Hearing Abigail she relaxes slightly, moves away from the
foot of the stairs and opens the door. Abi greets her with a
slightly startled look.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Hey, I didn’t know if anyone was
home.
Abi looks down at Annas wet clothes.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Are you o.k? Your all wet
Anna looks down at her wet clothes.

ANNA BROOKS
I was in the kitchen, I didn’t hear
the bell.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Why are you so wet?

ANNA BROOKS
A little mishap with the sink.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
O.k...um. I just popped by as I

ANNA BROOKS
Huh?

ABIGAIL HARTFORD

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Anna. You’re coming. I won’t take

for you. I’m not leaving til you
say yes.
Anna thinks for a second.

ANNA BROOKS
Fine. I’ll come. If it’s the only
way to get rid of you.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Charming.
Abigail looks a little taken aback. The girls stare at each
other for a moment.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Anyway, my address is 47 Fox Grove.
It’s just down past the police
station. I’ve written it all done
on a piece of paper so you don’t
forget. Come round after 7.30.

Abi places the note on the side.

ANNA BROOKS
I’m sorry, I will come.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Promise?
ANNA BROOKS
I said I will.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Good. You’ll probably want to put
something nice on, I think the
drowned look is out this season.
Anna smiles.

ANNA BROOKS
I really need to get out of these
clothes.
Abigail smiles back.

doorbell goes again. Believing it to be Abigail she wraps
the towel around herself and heads downstairs.

CUT TO:

INT. HALLWAY, HOUSE. DAY

Anna opens the front door. Standing in the doorway is Josh.
Anna appears slightly startled by his appearance.
ANNA BROOKS
What are you doing here?
JOSH ROBERTS
You left this on the beach.
He hands her the brown paper bag. She takes it and looks at
it for a second.
ANNA BROOKS
Oh. Thanks.
Anna goes to close the door on Josh. Josh puts his hand out
and stops her.
JOSH ROBERTS
Are you going to tell me what
happened out there? Why were you in
the sea?
ANNA BROOKS
I fell in.
JOSH ROBERTS
What? How did you fall in?

ANNA BROOKS
I just.....fell.
JOSH ROBERTS
That’s stupid, you can’t just fall
in. Why did you run away from me
when I came over?
Anna starts to get slightly inpatient with Joshes questions.
ANNA BROOKS
Look....I was wandering along the
shoreline when suddenly a large
wave took me by surprise
and knocked me over. I then wanted
to get home so that I could get out
of these wet clothes as quickly as
possible is that o.k?
JOSH ROBERTS
I don’t believe you.
ANNA BROOKS
I don’t care what you believe. It’s
the truth.
Anna looks towards the floor, before looking back up at
Josh.

ANNA BROOKS
How do you know where I live
anyway?
JOSH ROBERTS
You told me that you were staying
with the Collingwoods. My dad and
David use to work together
remember?
Anna’s tone of voice turns sarcastic.

ANNA BROOKS
I suppose you mean the man from the
store.
JOSH ROBERTS
No, he’s my step dad!
ANNA BROOKS
So where’s your real dad then?

JOSH ROBERTS
It doesn’t matter. I just wanted to
return your things and see that you
were ok, but forget it.
ANNA BROOKS
I said I was sorry sorry.
JOSH ROBERTS
and I said forget it.
Josh turns and walks away. Anna watches him for a bit
feeling guilty. She stands in the hallway wishes she could
have told him what really happened. She picks up the piece
of paper Abi gave her from the side and re-reads her
address.

LYDIA CAULFIELD

ANNA BROOKS

In the hallway Lydia starts to lead Anna towards the lounge
when Abigail suddenly appears holding two empty glasses.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Anna you made it. I knew if I

ANNA BROOKS
I can’t stay too long. I left a
note saying that I’d be home by
ten.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
How boring. Well, we’d better make
the most of it then.

Abigail moves through to the kitchen. Anna follows her and

Lydia moves into the living room.
CUT TO:

INT. KITCHEN, ABIGAILS HOUSE. NIGHT.

Abigail and Anna enter the kitchen. Anna stands by the door
whilst Abigail moves over to the side. Abigail places down
the two glasses and picks up a half finished bottle of wine.
She tops up both glasses and drinks a little bit from one of
them. She turns towards Anna.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
What would you like to drink?

ANNA BROOKS
A coke, lemonade anything soft, I
can’t drink on my tablets.

ANNA BROOKS

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Bummer. What about an orange juice?
I’m sure the doctor wouldn’t
disapprove of that.
ANNA BROOKS
Fine thanks.

Abigail gets her a glass out and starts to pour some juice
in.
ANNA BROOKS
So , whose here tonight then?

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Just a few people from our year.
All girls I’m afraid.
ANNA BROOKS
Good.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Why’s that? Aren’t you looking to
hook up with anyone?

ANNA BROOKS
Not really.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
(inquisitively)
Really?

ANNA BROOKS
No, why?
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
No reason. I just saw you talking
to young Joshua in the lunch hall
earlier today.
ANNA BROOKS
And?

ABIGAIL HARTFORD

odd though.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
You two should get on well then.
ANNA BROOKS
Funny.
(BEAT)
What’s the deal with you two
anyway?
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Deal? What do you mean?
ANNA BROOKS
He doesn’t seem to like you much.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
It’s a long story.
ANNA BROOKS
Funny that’s what he said.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
So, you’ve been talking about me
behind my back?
ANNA BROOKS
No, it just came up in
conversation.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
What did he say then?
ANNA BROOKS
He wouldn’t say anything.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Ok you’ll hear it anyway a few
years back his dad had an affair
with my mum. Things got a little
messy between them, then he left
town.

ANNA BROOKS

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
He’s lying. He just dissapeared one
day. I think Josh blames my mum for
him leaving.
ANNA BROOKS
How do you mean things got messy
between them?

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
His dad started saying my mum was
involved in some bad stuff.
ANNA BROOKS
Bad stuff?
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
God, do you ever stop asking
questions hun?

ANNA BROOKS
I’m just curious, that’s all.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
I don’t know what bad things. He’s
a liar.

Their conversation is cut short by one of the guests,

Louise, entering the kitchen.
LOUISE BARBER
Abi. Are you ever going to return
with my drink I wanna get wrecked.
Abigail and Anna both turn to face Louise.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Sorry Lou. This is Anna. I don’t
know if you’ve been introduced yet?

No, I think I’m kinda exempt from
having to do it. It being my first
day and all.
LOUISE BARBER
Lucky you. I won’t start mine till
tomorrow morning. As long as the
hangover doesn’t kill me
Whilst Anna’s attention is focused on Louise, Abigail opens
a bottle of Vodka and slips it into her glass of orange
juice.

ANNA BROOKS
Isn’t that leaving it a bit late?
LOUISE BARBER
Nah, it’s a five minute job. I’ll
just google the answers. Briggs is
so old she hasn’t a clue how to use
the internet. She’ll never be able
to check where I copied them from.
She’s pretty retarded like that.

Anna smiles. Abigail breaks their conversation.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Shall we go through to the lounge.
I can introduce you to all the
others.
As they move out of the kitchen Abigail hands Anna her glass
of orange juice. Anna takes a sip as they walk and reacts to
it’s strange taste.

a while.
Abigail starts to introduce Anna to each one.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
This is Fiona, Sarah, Izzy and
Samantha.
They girls acknowledge Anna, before rudely turning away and
ignoring her to continue with their respective
conversations. Anna takes another sip of her drink before
turning to Abigail.

ANNA BROOKS
Abi this drink tastes off.
Abigail takes the drink off of Anna and sips a bit.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
It tastes fine to me. Must be your
taste buds.
Abigail smiles and hands the glass back to Anna.

ANNA BROOKS
Are you sure this is just orange
juice?
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Of course hun. You don’t think I’d
be evil enough to spike your drink
do you?
ANNA BROOKS
I suppose not.

Anna takes another sip. She shudders slightly as she

swallows it. She then puts the glass down on the coffee
table. She sways slightly as the drink starts to affect her.

CUT TO:

INT. BATHROOM, ABIGAILS HOUSE. NIGHT

Anna enters the bathroom. She looks white, sweaty and ill.
She moves over to the sink and splashes cold water onto her
face. She then leans down and drinks a bit straight from the
tap. Standing back up she pauses to look at herself in the
mirror. She then quickly moves over to kneel down over the
toilet bowl.
She closes her eyes, the feeling of sick rising from her
stomach. She waits there for a few minutes but nothing comes
up. She takes a few deep breaths before getting back to her
feet. She moves back over to the mirror, takes a deep
breath, exhales and wipes the sweat away. She continues to
stand there, starring in the mirror, for a few moments more.
She then suddenly hears a sound coming in through the open
bathroom window. She moves over to hear a bit more closely,
peering out into the darkness. As she strains her hearing
she notices the sounds of children crying can be faintly
heard. She stands for a few moments longer, making sure that
the sounds are really there. She then quickly leaves the
bathroom.

CUT TO:

INT. LIVING ROOM, ABIGAILS HOUSE. NIGHT

Anna bursts into the living room and moves over towards
Abigail, who is in conversation with Lydia. Anna breaks
their conversation.
ANNA BROOKS
Abi. I think I can hear something
odd outside.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
It’s a very odd neighborhood.

heard it clearly upstairs.

The other girls pick up on the odd behavior.

LOUISE BARBER
What’s she on about?
Abi looks concerned that her party is in jeopardy. Anna
grabs Abi.
ANNA BROOKS
Out the front. It sounds like
they’re crying. Abi, I think
something bad’s happening.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
It’s probably just kids playing.
ANNA BROOKS
I don’t think so. They sound in
distress. We need to go out and
look for them.
LOUISE BARBER
Abi whatever she’s on, I’ll have
some

The other girls laugh loudly. Abigail and Lydia look at each
other confused. Abi takes control.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
No problem girls, I think myself
and Lydia should just go sort this
out.
Abi grabs Anna and leads her out of the living room.

CUT TO:

EXT. FRONT GARDEN, ABIGAILS HOUSE. NIGHT

LYDIA CAULFIELD
Maybe your tablets are making you
hear things.
ANNA BROOKS
(angrily)
I heard it alright!

The three girls move out of shot.

CUT TO:

EXT. FIELD. NIGHT

They appear next to a barbed wire fence running along the
outskirts of the field. Anna turns to the others.
ANNA BROOKS
I’m pretty sure the sounds seemed
to be coming from in this field
somewhere.
Abigail and Lydia look at each other as Anna climbs the
fence and into the field. Anna wanders off across the field.
Lydia decides to follow her. As she climbs over the fence
she catches her dress on the wire. As she lowers herself
down on the other side her dress tears. She looks down at
the tear in disgust.

LYDIA CAUFIELD
Jesus, look what’s happened. This
was a tenner in Primark.
She stands there for a few moments looking at her dress as
Abigail more carefully tackles the fence. Abigail ascends
without tearing her dress. The two girls watch as Anna makes
her way across the field. Abigail calls out to her.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD

Anna doesn’t respond. She continues to stand in the field,
starring out into the darkness.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Anna for gods sake!
Abigail starts to walk out across the field to Anna. Lydia
stays where she is, still brooding over her ripped dress.
Abigail reaches Anna. Anna doesn’t turn round to her, but
instead keeps starring out into the dark. Before Abigail
says a word to her, she looks down at her dress. Abigails
clothes are now ruined, completely covered in mud. She
doesn’t say anything, her face says it all. She looks at
Anna in contempt. Anna continues to stare, searching the
darkness for the sounds once more.

TIME CUT TO:

Abigail goes to move inside too, but Anna stops her.
ANNA BROOKS
I’m sorry. I honestly thought I
heard something.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
It’s fine!

The two girls stand for a few moments in silence.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Shouldn’t you be heading home now?
ANNA BROOKS
You’re mad with me, aren’t you?
Abigail wipes a bit of mud from her dress.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Anna I think you should be getting

I’ll live!
Abigail moves inside her house and closes the door.

CUT TO:

EXT. FIELD. NIGHT

Anna starts to walk home by herself. It’s a cold night and

she can only just about see by the moonlight. She is
thinking things over in her mind and not really paying
attention to where she is. Suddenly she hears a noise which
breaks her out of her daze. It’s the sound of a child crying
again.

Looking around for the source of the noise she suddenly

realises that she no longer knows where she is. She decides
to try and ignore the sound so that she can work out how to
get back to familiar ground. Looking all around her she
realises she is now walking across mist covered moors.
Having never been here before she struggles to try and
locate her position.
Another sound of children crying cuts through the air. Anna
quickens her pace and tries to work her way off the moors.
She tries to retrace her steps but ends up walking further
and further into unknown territory. Looking down she strains
her eyes to see stones planted in the ground all around her.
The sounds start to get louder and louder. They seem to be
all around her and they appear to be closing in on her. She
places her hands over her ears and looks towards the floor.
She suddenly notices that she can no longer see the ground.
When she looks up she realises that she is now completely
engulfed in darkness. Panicking she tries to move in any
direction, but has no clue where to run. The sounds are now
multi layered and unbearable.

Anna blackouts and collapses to the ground.

INT. BEDROOM. NIGHT

Anna jolts up. She is sat in her bed. She has no clue how
she got here. It is still dark. She looks around her
surroundings, confused as to how she ended up here. She lays
back down in her bed. Something makes her sit back up. She
see’s a boy standing at the foot of her bed. She rubs her
eyes and when she re-opens them he’s now gone. She lays back
down and as she does she turns to her left. The boy has
moved to this side of the bed. Anna jolts back up. He slowly
walks out of the room. After a moment Anna gets out of bed
and follows him. She makes her way down stairs and into the
living room. He has disappeared. Anna frantically looks
around the room before she is overcome and collapses onto
the floor.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. LIVING ROOM. DAY

Anna opens her eyes. She is laying on the settee in the
living room. Jennifer and David are towering over her. Anna
stirs before fully awakening. Jennifer and David don’t say a
word, but continue to stare disapprovingly.
ANNA BROOKS
How...how did I get here?

They don’t answer her question.

DAVID COLLINGWOOD
How much did you drink last night?

ANNA BROOKS
I didn’t drink anything.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
You know you’re not allowed to mix
medication with alcohol. I’m
surprised it didn’t kill you, you
stupid girl.
ANNA BROOKS
I didn’t have anything to drink!

Anna sits up on the couch before looking around the room.

ANNA BROOKS
Who was that boy that was here last
night?

Jennifer looks at David not amused.

DAVID COLLINGWOOD
You had a boy in our house?

ANNA BROOKS
No not like that, a little blond
boy, dressed in a green school
uniform.
David and Jennifer give each other a slightly nervous look.
David quickly answers.
DAVID COLLINGWOOD
I think your imagining things again
young lady. What time did you get
in last night?

ANNA BROOKS
last night. What time is it now
then?
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
7.00. You’d better hurry up or
you’ll be late for school.
DAVID COLLINGWOOD
I knew you’d be bloody trouble. I
don’t know why we agreed to have
you.
ANNA
I’m sorry.

Anna slowly starts to get up. Jennifer hands her a glass of

water and the container of her medication. David moves over
to his chair and sits down. As he moves Anna notices the
bottoms of his trousers are covered in sand.
ANNA BROOKS
What were you doing last night?
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
You’ve got a cheek, you go off to
some girls house, doing heaven
knows what and crawl back in at
some unsightly hour and you have
the audacity to ask us what we’ve
been doing!
David looks at his wife.

DAVID COLLINGWOOD
You could have phoned, let us know
you’d be out all night.

I didn’t know where you had gone.
How could I have got hold of you?
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
You shouldn’t have gone in the
first place. I don’t know how your
mother puts up with you. You don’t
just go off like that. Now get a
move on. You’ll be late.

Anna finishes her glass of water and leaves the room.

CUT TO:

INT. BATHROOM. DAY

Anna enters the bathroom. She quickly finishes putting her

school clothes on. She then moves over to the mirror and
stares into it. She opens her eyes wide and looks at her
bloodshot eyes. She rubs them before splashing water over
her face. She then leaves the bathroom.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. ST EDWARDS. DAY

Anna enters the school corridor alone. She is late and

lessons have already begun. She moves quickly down the empty
corridor and towards the door to room 16. She opens it and
moves inside.

Anna moves down the centre of the classroom and sits down

I’m sorry again about last night.
Abigail turns to Anna.
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
(WHISPERING)
You seem to be sorry about a lot of
things today.
ANNA BROOKS
Is your dress o.k?
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Ruined!
ANNA BROOKS
I could replace it?
ABIGAIL HARTFORD
Don’t bother.
Abigail turns back to the front of the class. Anna, sensing
that Abigail is ignoring her, looks back towards the front
as well. Anna then looks around the room. She looks over to
where Lydia normally sits. Her space is empty. Anna turns
back towards Abigail.

Abigail continues to stare forward as she answers.

Ill.
Anna doesn’t press her for any more information. She just

a few notes. Her eyes then start to wander around the room.
She notices that Joshes chair is also empty. She turns back
round just as the bell rings.
LAURENCE PHILLIPS
Right class. If you all want to
form an orderly queue outside we
can start to make our way down.
Everyone starts to get up. Anna turns to Abigail.
ANNA BROOKS
Where are we going?

Abigail doesn’t answer her. She just quickly gets up, puts
all her stuff away and exits the room, leaving Anna behind.
Anna sits for a few moments feeling slightly lost.
LAURENCE PHILLIPS
Anna, are you alright?
ANNA BROOKS
Yes. I just don’t know what’s
happening.

LAURENCE PHILLIPS
Didn’t anyone tell you?
Anna shakes her head.
LAURENCE PHILLIPS
We’re having a geography field trip
down to the beach.
ANNA BROOKS
I don’t know if I really want to go

stopping her.
LAURENCE PHILLIPS
Can I have a quick little chat with
you Anna?

ANNA BROOKS
Sure.
LAURENCE PHILLIPS
How are you finding St Edwards?

ANNA BROOKS
It’s fine.
LAURENCE PHILLIPS
Sorry if I seemed a bit harsh with
you when you came in late. At St
Edwards we pride ourselves on

ANNA BROOKS
It won’t happen again.
LAURENCE PHILLIPS
I’m sure it won’t.
A moment of silence.

LAURENCE PHILLIPS
How are you finding it with the
Collingwoods?
ANNA BROOKS
It’s O.k.
Mr Phillips leans slightly closer towards Anna, running his
fingers through his hair as he does so.

ANNA BROOKS

Mr Phillips smiles. Anna returns the gesture before leaving
the room.
TIME CUT TO:

EXT. BEACH. DAY

The class makes their way down to the beach. Anna lags
behind by herself. Laurence leads the group. They reach a
clear patch of sand away from anyone else.
LAURENCE PHILLIPS
Right everyone. If you could take
out your note books.
Everyone starts to take out their books and pads of paper.
LAURENCE PHILLIPS
Today we’re going to be looking at
erosion and life forms on the beach
and surrounding area. Two quite
different subjects I know. O.k. I
have completed a handout for you to
complete as you move around. We’ll
separate into two groups. The first
group, which is everyone from me up

any caves or the sea. If anyone has
a problem come and find me. Is
everyone clear with that?
The group let out a quite mumble.

LAURENCE PHILLIPS
I’ll repeat myself then. Is
everyone clear with that?
Everyone says ’yes’ more loudly and clearer.

Good. We’ll meet back here in an

The crowd disperses. Everyone pairs off or into little
groups, except Anna, who is left at the back by herself. She
stands for a while watching everyone before deciding to look
down at the sheet. She looks back up and starts to wander
off by herself. She makes her way to a rock pool near a
cave. She sits down and looks into the water. She see’s a
few signs of wildlife. Crabs, starfish etc. She starts to
fill in a few of the questions.

Suddenly she feels she is being watched over by someone. She

turns around to see Lydia standing over her.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
Hello Anna.

ANNA BROOKS
Lydia. What are you doing here? I
mean, I thought you were ill today.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
No.
She turns and looks out across the sea. Anna looks over at
the other people. She can barely make out their voices. The
sounds coming from them sound muffled and fuzzy. She looks
back up at Lydia.

ANNA BROOKS
Are you still mad at me about last
night.
Lydia doesn’t turn around. She continues to stare out into
the sea.
LYDIA CAULFIELD
No not really.

Lydia quickly walks away. She moves around the corner of a

rock before Anna has a chance to catch up with her. Just as
Anna get’s to her feet her ears pop and the sound of the
other people can be heard. She slowly makes her way back to
the others. She approaches Abigail.

ANNA BROOKS
Abigail. I know you’re not really
talking to me, but I just saw
Lydia.

Abigail suddenly stops what she is doing and stares at Anna.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD
I think you must be mistaken.
ANNA BROOKS
She just came over to the rock
pool. She seemed pretty angry with
you. What’s happened between you
two?
Abi confronts Anna standing inches from her face.

ABIGAIL HARTFORD

ANNA BROOKS

stop such things.

JOSH ROBERTS
It must be difficult.

It’s not that much of a problem
anymore. There’s another side to it
though.
JOSH ROBERTS
What do you mean?
ANNA BROOKS
I sometimes suffer hallucinations.
Well, I’m not meant to, not
anymore. Not now I’m on this new
medication.
JOSH ROBERTS

But the other day... down at the

Anna looks at him slightly concerned.
ANNA BROOKS
There’s a hospital in town.

specialist.

early 19th century?
ANNA BROOKS

EXT. MOORS. DAY

The camera follows them as they reach the top of a hill.
Anna looks at Josh as he stares down the other side. He nods
his head forward and Anna turns to see what he’s looking at.
The camera cuts to his point of view. The camera pulls back
and moves upwards to show a wide shot of the entire moors.
As it moves upwards Josh and Anna move down the hill and
onto the moors. We see hundreds of carved stone markers in
rows all along the moors. Josh and Anna begin to move
amongst them. Anna stops walking to look at them before
turning to Josh.
ANNA BROOKS
What are these?

JOSH ROBERTS
Graves.
ANNA BROOKS
You mean people are buried here?

JOSH ROBERTS
Children.
Ann seems horrified.

ANNA BROOKS
What?

JOSH ROBERTS
All these stones mark the graves of
children.
Anna stares at all the stones for a few moments in
disbelief. She then turns back to Josh.

ANNA BROOKS
I think I’ve been here before.
JOSH ROBERTS
When?

ANNA BROOKS
I don’t know. I just feel like I’ve
been here before. But I couldn’t
have.

She looks at the surrounding area, before looking back the

stones. She then turns to Josh.
ANNA BROOKS
What happened?

JOSH ROBERTS
It’s a long story.
Anna turns back towards the stones.

JOSH ROBERTS
Around a hundred years ago this
town was a lot smaller. There was
only one main road in and out. Then
in late October it started snowing.
The towns people had been storing
food away anyway for the winter
months, so they felt they should be
o.k, although they didn’t expect it
to start snowing so early. The only
problem was that it didn’t stop....
It continued snowing for months and
months. All throughout November,
December and January. By the time
it had gotten to February the last
of the summer harvest was long
gone. No one could get out to get
help and no one could get in with
supplies as the only road was
completely cut off. People slowly
started dying. The first to go were
the children.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 67.

ANNA BROOKS
So they buried them here?
JOSH ROBERTS
It’s worse than that. They had
nothing to eat. When the first few
children died the adults got
together and made a decision. It
would be something which would
haunt them for the rest of their
lives. They decided they would eat
the childrens bodies.
ANNA BROOKS
You’ve got to be joking?
Josh shakes his head.

ANNA BROOKS
I think i might need to throw up.
JOSH ROBERTS
They continued this for several
weeks. Sometimes they wouldn’t even
wait until they died. When a child
was too weak they would simply
finish them off before devouring
them.

Anna looks away from Josh, completely shocked. She stares at

the many stones.
JOSH ROBERTS
Then at the beginning of March the
snow slowly stopped falling. It
took another couple of weeks for it
to melt enough before someone could
finally get out. Before anyone left
though they decided that they would
never let the outside world what
had happened. They simply couldn’t
live the rest of their lives with
the knowledge that the rest of
world would know what they had
done. So in order to keep their
little secret they rounded up all
the remains of the children, the
bones and clothes and what not, and
buried them out on these moors. It
was only through hushed rumors,
spread down through the generations
that the truth has lived on. It was
several decades later that the

current town folk decided to put
these rumors to rest and so set
about excavating parts of the
moors. When they did they were
shocked to discover infant bones
and so proved that the rumors were
indeed true. As they were unable to
identify any of the remains they
decided to re-bury them and mark
the area with simple blank stones.
ANNA BROOKS
That’s one of the worst things I’ve
ever heard.
JOSH ROBERTS
It’s not something this town’s
particularly proud of. I doubt
you’ll find it listed in the local
holiday maker brochures.
ANNA BROOKS
Were your family involved?

JOSH ROBERTS
Probably. I think all the families
were....including yours.
Anna, once again, looks back the stones. She silently counts
how many there are. She then removes her camera and goes to
take a photo. She stops herself to turn around and move back
up the hill in order to get a wider shot. Josh goes to
follow her but she stops him.
ANNA BROOKS
Could you stand amongst the stones?
JOSH ROBERTS
Why? Do you want me in the photo?

ANNA BROOKS
It’s a thing I have. I can’t take
photos without people in them?
JOSH ROBERTS
Why not?

ANNA BROOKS
I don’t know. It just sort of adds
meaning to a picture. I feel that a
photo without someone in it is
pointless. Anyone could have taken

ANNA BROOKS
Do you?
JOSH ROBERTS
Kind of.

Josh turns around and moves back down towards the stones.
Anna reaches the top of the hill.
JOSH ROBERTS

ANNA BROOKS
No, a little to your left.
Josh gets confused and moves to his right. Anna smiles at
his mistake.

I’m still settling in. I’ve only
been here a few days.
David bangs the table making everyone jump.
DAVID COLLINGWOOD
Well you need to start making a
better impression. I told you
before we have a good relationship
with the school.

ANNA BROOKS
I’m sorry.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Do you have work to be getting on
with tonight?

ANNA BROOKS
A few small assignments.
DAVID COLLINGWOOD
Then you’ll do them straight after
tea.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Come on finish your dinner its
getting cold.

Anna resumes eating her dinner. The meal continues in

silence.
TIME CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM. NIGHT

Anna is in her bedroom. She is sat behind her desk doing her
work. She hears the tree creaking in the wind outside. She
picks up her camera and goes to the window. She looks down
by the yew tree and once again standing next to it is the
man. He looks up at her. Anna quickly takes the camera out
and takes a photo. She then immediately looks through the
photos on the camera to see the picture. When she finds the
photo it shows the tree, but the figure isn’t present. She
looks back up from the camera and out of the window. The man
has now gone.

INT. ST EDWARDS. DAY

The next day. Anna arrives at school. She makes her way to
room 16. She enters the room.

INT. ROOM 16, ST EDWARDS. DAY

Inside the room she moves towards her seat next to Abigail.
Instead of sitting down she moves past. Abigail doesn’t
acknowledge her. She makes her way towards Josh. She stands
next to the empty seat by Josh.

ANNA BROOKS
May I take this seat?
Josh just smiles back at Anna. Anna sits down. She looks
over at Abigail.
ANNA BROOKS
It’s amazing how easily some people
can suddenly decide to dislike you.

Josh looks over at Abigail.

JOSH ROBERTS
What happened between you two then?
ANNA BROOKS
It’s a long story...but it ends
with her dress getting torn.
JOSH ROBERTS
(lauging)
I’m sure she deserved it.

Anna looks around the room and notices more empty seats.
ANNA BROOKS
Is it just me or is this place
getting like a ghost town?

JOSH ROBERTS
Apparently a lot of people have
called in ill. I think it’s
something going round. It happens
at this time every year. Also a lot
of people seem to move out of the
area. We’re always getting new
classmates. I don’t think people
enjoy living here all that much.

ANNA BROOKS
Can’t say I’m surprised it sucks.
JOSH ROBERTS
Oi this is my home town

ANNA BROOKS

They both smile.

JOSH ROBERTS
Did you manage to do the homework
on Thomas?

ANNA BROOKS
I started it. But didn’t really
know what I was doing with it.
JOSH ROBERTS
Want to have a look at mine?

ANNA BROOKS
Please.
Josh passes her his paper. As she takes it off of him their
hands touch. He nearly drops the paper out of awkwardness.
Anna looks at him for a second, smiles, then looks down at
his paper.
TIME CUT TO:

EXT. STREET. DAY

Anna and Josh are walking back from school.
ANNA BROOKS
Can I ask you something?
JOSH ROBERTS
What?
ANNA BROOKS
Do you believe in ghosts?
JOSH ROBERTS
It’s not really something I waste
time thinking about

ANNA BROOKS
Do you though?
JOSH ROBERTS
Probably not. Why do you ask?

ANNA BROOKS
I’ve been seeing a lot of strange
things recently.

(CONTINUED)

JOSH ROBERTS
Like the boy in the sea?

Anna laughs.
ANNA BROOKS
Yes. Along with some other stuff.
JOSH ROBERTS
Such as?
ANNA BROOKS
I was at Abigails house the other
night and I thought I could hear
children outside.

JOSH ROBERTS
That’s not that unusual.
ANNA BROOKS
It sounded like loads of them and
they were crying out in pain. We
went out and looked around but
nothing.
JOSH ROBERTS
Was that how her dress got ruined?

ANNA BROOKS
Yeah. She tore it on a barbed wire
fence. But there’s other things.

JOSH ROBERTS
Go on.
ANNA BROOKS
I keep seeing this man outside my
house. He’s always stood by the yew
tree in the garden.
JOSH ROBERTS
You said you’ve had hallucinations
before. How do you know that these
just aren’t more of them?

ANNA BROOKS
I don’t. They just
seem....different. They feel
more...real.

JOSH ROBERTS
So you think ghosts are haunting
you?

(CONTINUED)

ANNA BROOKS
I don’t know.
They stop walking. Anna looks at Josh.
ANNA BROOKS
You believe me though...don’t you?
JOSH ROBERTS
I believe every word which comes
out of your mouth.

Anna smiles.
JOSH ROBERTS
If you don’t feel like going home
straight away you can always kill
some time at my place.
ANNA BROOKS
I’d like that.
JOSH ROBERTS
All though I must warn you the
bogeyman might be hiding in the
cupboard.
ANNA
Don’t take the piss.

Together they walk out of shot.

CUT TO:

EXT. JOSH’S HOUSE. DAY

They reach the door to Josh’s house. He pauses to get out
his keys.
ANNA BROOKS
Is anyone else home?
JOSH ROBERTS
They shouldn’t be. Stephen should
still be at the shop and my mum is
away on business stuff.
Josh unlocks the door and they enter.
CUT TO:
77.

INT. LIVING ROOM, JOSH’S HOUSE. DAY

They step into the hallway.
JOSH ROBERTS
Shall I take your coat?

ANNA BROOKS
Thanks.
Anna hands him her coat.

ANNA BROOKS
Your a true gentleman.
Josh smiles.

JOSH ROBERTS
I think I must get it from my dad.
Ian, my real dad, not Stephen.
Josh hangs her coat up.

JOSH ROBERTS
Would you like a drink?
Anna shakes her head.
ANNA BROOKS
No it’s o.k.
JOSH ROBERTS
Are you sure? I was just going to
put the kettle on make a brew.
Would be a lot of effort just for
me.
ANNA BROOKS
Go on then. But no sugar.

JOSH ROBERTS
You on a diet or something?
ANNA BROOKS
No cheeky!

JOSH ROBERTS
You can go through to the lounge.
Josh points in the direction of the lounge.

He moves away and Anna walks through to the lounge.
CUT TO:

INT. LOUNGE, JOSH’S HOUSE. DAY

Anna stands slightly nervously by the living room door. She
looks around at all the furnishings and all of the pictures
and photographs on the walls. She picks up a photograph of a
woman.
Josh enters the room.

JOSH ROBERTS
Should be a couple of minutes.
Waters just boiling.
Anna turns towards Josh, still holding the photograph.

ANNA BROOKS
Is this your mum?
JOSH ROBERTS
Yeah, that’s Emily.

ANNA BROOKS
She’s pretty. I can see where you
get your good looks from.
JOSH ROBERTS
Well some people do say I resemble
David Beckham.
Anna quickly looks back down at the photograph.
ANNA BROOKS
What does she do?
JOSH ROBERTS
Emily? She works for some
pharmaceutical company. I can’t
remember which one. She’s always
away on sales trips.
ANNA BROOKS
I thought you said you didn’t
really know anyone from outside of
town?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 79.

JOSH ROBERTS
She doesn’t really get to
experience the places she visits.
She’s always locked away in some
conference or hotel room. She can
never really tell me much about the
towns or places she goes. I think
it’s quite a lonely life for her.
ANNA BROOKS
Does your dad mind her being away
all the time?
JOSH ROBERTS
You mean Stephen.
ANNA BROOKS
Sorry, Stephen.
JOSH ROBERTS
I don’t think he really cares that
much. As long as she brings in the
money he’s happy.

ANNA BROOKS
You don’t seem to like Stephen very
much.
JOSH ROBERTS
He’s just a bit of a dick.
Anna looks around at some other photographs.
ANNA BROOKS
Is there a photo of your real dad
anywhere?
JOSH ROBERTS
Not down here there isn’t. My mum
took them all away after his
affair. I’ve got some in my room,
hidden away.
ANNA BROOKS
Would she be angry if she knew you
had them then?

JOSH ROBERTS
Probably not. I just think she
doesn’t wanted to be reminded of
what he did.

ANNA BROOKS
Do you care about what he did?
JOSH ROBERTS
It wasn’t right....but he’s still
my dad isn’t he?

The kettle clicks off in the kitchen.

JOSH ROBERTS
I’ll sort the tea.

He goes to leave the room, before stopping.

JOSH ROBERTS
If you want, we can go up to my
room so that I can show you a photo
of my real dad.
ANNA BROOKS
Is this how you get all the girls
into your room?

JOSH ROBERTS
No...I just wanted...
Anna smiles.
ANNA BROOKS
I’m only kidding.
Josh smiles back, before exiting the living room.
TIME CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM, JOSH’S HOUSE. DAY

They enter his bedroom holding their cups. Josh sits down on
his bed, whilst Anna stands and starts to look around his
room.

JOSH ROBERTS
So what do your parents do?
ANNA BROOKS
My dad works for some finance
company in an office. Don’t ask me
too much about it, I don’t honestly
know what he does.

(CONTINUED)

JOSH ROBERTS
And your mum?
ANNA BROOKS
She’s a primary school teacher.

JOSH ROBERTS
Is that something you’d like to do?
ANNA BROOKS
Not really. I haven’t really
thought that far ahead with my
life.
JOSH ROBERTS
If you don’t mind me asking, why
are they getting divorced?

ANNA BROOKS
I guess after twenty years of
marriage they just suddenly decided
that they don’t love each other
anymore.

JOSH ROBERTS
That’s kinda sad.
ANNA BROOKS
Yep.

Josh bends down and reaches under his bed. He retrieves a

cardboard box and puts it on his lap. He opens it and starts
to rummage through it. Anna moves over and sits down on the
bed next to him.

ANNA BROOKS
What’s that?
JOSH ROBERTS
My memory box. It’s just a
collection of things from
throughout my life. Stuff from when
I was little.
He holds up his baby arm tag.

ANNA BROOKS
That’s so cute.
He continues to rummage through as Anna looks at the tag.

JOSH ROBERTS
I’m just looking for a photo of my
dad.
ANNA BROOKS
So..what do you think really
happened to him?
Josh stops searching to respond to Annas question.
JOSH ROBERTS
I don’t really know. It’s all so
vague, but I’m sure he discovered
something about Abigails family.
ANNA BROOKS
Such as?

JOSH ROBERTS
I don’t know. Before he had a
chance to tell me everything, he
was gone.

ANNA BROOKS
You think they killed him?
JOSH ROBERTS
I can’t prove anything, but yea I
do.

ANNA BROOKS
Are you being serious? What could
he have discovered that was so bad
that they would go to such an
extreme?
JOSH ROBERTS
I don’t know.
ANNA BROOKS
Didn’t you think about going to the
police?
JOSH ROBERTS
I didn’t have any proof, they
wouldn’t have believed anything I
said.
ANNA BROOKS
How do you know her family was
involved?

(CONTINUED)

JOSH ROBERTS
He mentioned bits and pieces to me,
but I don’t think he wanted to tell
me too much until he was one
hundred percent sure himself. He
was trying to get enough evidence
together and then...he just
disappeared.
ANNA BROOKS
Does Abigail know about all this?

JOSH ROBERTS
I don’t know. She’s never mentioned
anything to me. It all happened
years ago so I guess, whatever it
was, it’s all over now.

Josh stares at Anna.

JOSH ROBERTS
You do believe me don’t you?

ANNA BROOKS
Of course.
Josh looks back down into the box and pulls out a
photograph.

JOSH ROBERTS
Here’s my dad.
He shows the photograph to Anna. She stares at it in shock.
ANNA BROOKS
Jesus
JOSH ROBERTS
What’s the matter?

ANNA BROOKS
I know him.
JOSH ROBERTS
You can’t possibly know him.

ANNA BROOKS
I’ve seen him.
JOSH ROBERTS
Where?

They look at each other stunned. We cut to a close up of the

photograph.
TIME CUT TO:

EXT. HOUSE. DAY

Anna and Josh are outside her aunts house making their way
up the gravel drive. Josh moves up to the yew tree.

JOSH ROBERTS
Is this the one?
ANNA BROOKS
Yes.

They start to move around it.

ANNA BROOKS
I saw him again last night. I tried
to take a photo of him, but his
image didn’t appear.

JOSH ROBERTS
Are you sure it’s definitely my
dad?
ANNA BROOKS
As sure as I am of you standing
here today.
Josh moves around the tree again. He moves his hand around
against the bark and stares at it more closely.

JOSH ROBERTS
Every time you’ve seen him he’s
always stood by this tree?
ANNA BROOKS
I’ve only seen him a couple of
times, but he’s always here. The
first time he moved behind it and
vanished. The second time I saw him
I was looking down, out of my
upstairs window.

Josh stands back to get a better look at the whole tree. He

then notices a crack in the trunk half way up.

up.
Josh points. Anna looks up.

JOSH ROBERTS
It looks as if it’s been cut open a
while back and now the tree has
re-grown around the hole.

He turns towards Anna.

JOSH ROBERTS
Have you got a ladder? An axe?
Spade? Anything we could break the
tree open with?

ANNA BROOKS
There should be something in the
greenhouse.
Josh moves away and quickly around the house. Anna follows.

CUT TO:

INT. GREENHOUSE. DAY

He enters the greenhouse and starts to search around. Anna

joins him a second behind. He finds a step ladder and an
axe.
ANNA BROOKS
I don’t think we should do this. My
aunt and uncle will kill me. What
if there’s nothing there?
JOSH ROBERTS
What if there is?
(BEAT)
Anna..I have to do this.
ANNA BROOKS
O.K.

They exit the greenhouse.

CUT TO:
86.

EXT. YEW TREE. DAY

They move back round to the yew tree holding both the ladder
and the axe. Josh places the ladder against the tree and
climbs up holding the axe. He wedges the axe into the hole
and pulls it violently to one side. The tree groans. Pieces
or bark snap off. He repeats this a couple more times until
the hole is big enough. He peers inside, but it’s too dark
to see.
JOSH ROBERTS
Anna, have you got a flashlight?
Anna runs back towards the house.
CUT TO:

INT. HOUSE. DAY

Anna enters the house. She searches in a cupboard in the
hallway. She finds a flashlight and exits the house.

CUT TO:

EXT. YEW TREE. DAY

Anna returns with the flashlight. She passes it up the
ladder to Josh. He takes it from her, turns it on, and
shines it inside the tree. As he does it illuminates the
remains of a contorted skeleton contained within the bowels
of the tree. Startled, Josh drops the flashlight, before
quickly descending back down the ladder. In shock he sits
down on the lawn. Anna moves over to him.

ANNA BROOKS
What is it?
Josh looks up at Anna.

want?
JOSH ROBERTS
And how will we tell them that we
discovered it? That the ghost of my
dad led us to it?
ANNA BROOKS
Obviously we’ll leave that bit out.

Anna stops walking and turns to Josh.

ANNA BROOKS
We have to tell someone.

Josh looks at Anna.

JOSH ROBERTS
There’s a good chance it won’t be
open.

They start to walk again.

ANNA BROOKS
How come?
JOSH ROBERTS
It’s only manned for a few hours
each day.
ANNA BROOKS
It’s still worth a try.

Together they walk out of shot.

we’re lying and won’t come to your
aunts house to see for himself.
ANNA BROOKS
Who else is there then?
They stand for a while.
ANNA BROOKS
Where does Mr Phillips live?

JOSH ROBERTS
Just around the corner. Do you

ANNA BROOKS

Laurence looks at Josh then Anna before looking towards the

stops. Suddenly the door opens.

LAURENCE PHILLIPS
What do you think you’re doing?
ANNA BROOKS
I er just needed to go to the
bathroom.

He stares at her for a moment before replying.

LAURENCE PHILLIPS
Go on then over there on the left.

ANNA BROOKS

LAURENCE PHILLIPS
That’ll be the police. Wait here
I’ll go and speak to them.

Laurence gets up and leaves the room to answer it. Josh

turns towards Anna.
JOSH ROBERTS
What are you going to tell your
aunt and uncle?
ANNA BROOKS
I don’t know.... I haven’t thought
that far a head.
(BEAT)
What are you going to tell Stephen?
Josh leans back in his chair to think for a moment.
JOSH ROBERTS

ANNA BROOKS
You have to.
JOSH ROBERTS
Why does he even need to know?

ANNA BROOKS
It’ll be all over the papers.
The door bursts open and in walks Jennifer, David and
Stephen.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
What the Hell is going on young

ANNA BROOKS
Shall we all go and see then?
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
Fine. Let’s go and prove how
delusional you both really are.

TIME CUT TO:

David’s house. Anna, Josh, Jennifer, David, Stephen and Mr
Phillips are now joined by two policemen. Together they all
make their way up the path and towards the yew tree in
silence. When they reach it the ladder is still in place.

POLICEMAN #1
Is this the tree?
Anna nods.
The first policeman turns on his flashlight and starts to
make his way up the ladder. The second policeman waits at
the foot of the ladder, holding it steady for him. The first
policeman shines his light inside the tree before looking
back down to his partner. He shakes his head, before looking
over to Jennifer.

POLICEMAN #1

I’m not apologising to anyone.
JOSH ROBERTS
Nor me.
Jennifer stares at her in disbelief.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
I think you’ve out stayed your
welcome. I’ll be ringing your
mother tonight to make
arrangements. I don’t think you
fully understand the damaged you’ve
caused.
Anna stops struggling. David releases his grip on her. She
stands for a moment, starring at everyone.

JOSH ROBERTS
Come on Anna. What’s the use of
arguing with them?
ANNA BROOKS
Fine.

Anna starts to walk away. Jennifer calls after her.

Anna continues to stare out of the window. Jennifer waits

for her to say something, but she doesn’t respond.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD

Jennifer leaves the room, closing the door behind her. Anna

motionless, starring forward. We cut to her point of view.
Standing at the end of her bed is the same boy as before.

him. He then points down towards the sand. Anna looks down
in the direction he’s indicating. She then looks back up at

ANNA BROOKS
What is it?

JOSH ROBERTS
You could stay here?
ANNA BROOKS
Wouldn’t Stephen mind?

JOSH ROBERTS
We’ll just be quiet
ANNA BROOKS
Thanks Josh.

She smiles at him.

ANNA BROOKS
Do you have a spade?

JOSH ROBERTS
Somewhere.
ANNA BROOKS
Go and get it.

JOSH ROBERTS
Why?
ANNA BROOKS
We’re taking a trip to the beach.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. BEACH. NIGHT

Anna and Josh arrive on the beach. Anna starts wandering

around, trying to locate the area on the sand. She looks
around her at the cliffs to try and find any reference
point.
JOSH ROBERTS
What do you think is buried there?
ANNA BROOKS
No idea. But it must be something
important.

Anna searches some more, before deciding upon a location.

ANNA BROOKS
I’m pretty sure it was here.
She points towards the ground. The sand is now a darker
colour around the area than before.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 99.

JOSH ROBERTS
Are you sure this is right?
ANNA BROOKS
I think so. Although the sand does
look a little darker then it did a
couple of hours earlier.
Josh sticks the spade into the ground. It slides into damp,
hard sand.

JOSH ROBERTS
This sand doesn’t feel like top
sand.
He bends down and touches it.

JOSH ROBERTS
It feels cold and wet. Not dry and
dusty.
ANNA BROOKS
What does that mean?

JOSH ROBERTS
I don’t know. It’s just odd, that’s
all.
He resumes digging. Anna looks on.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. BEACH. NIGHT

Several hours have elapsed. A large pile of sand sits next

to a large, deep hole. Josh, about five foot down, stands in
the hole continuing to dig. Anna sits on the sand next to
him. He looks up her.

JOSH ROBERTS
There’s nothing here.
ANNA BROOKS
I don’t understand it.

JOSH ROBERTS
Are you sure this is the right
place?
Anna looks at the surrounding features around her.

(CONTINUED)

ANNA BROOKS
I’m one hundred percent it is.

Josh looks down in the hole, before looking back up at her.

JOSH ROBERTS
I’m gonna give up. It’ll be getting
light soon.

He climbs out of the hole and sits down next to her.

ANNA BROOKS
Maybe it was all a dream.
JOSH ROBERTS
Who knows.
Anna doesn’t respond to this.
ANNA BROOKS
It’s cold.

She moves closer to Josh. He sits still for a moment before

tentatively putting his arm around her. She rests her head
on his shoulder.
JOSH ROBERTS
Do you want to go home yet?
Anna looks at him.
ANNA BROOKS
Its not my home anymore.

Josh pulls her closer.

ANNA BROOKS
Do you want me to go then?

JOSH ROBERTS
God no. Is there anything you miss?
ANNA BROOKS
Not really.
(BEAT)
Well, I guess I miss my dad.
Anna looks up at the night sky.
ANNA BROOKS
Do you know what the stars are?
Josh looks up, before looking back at Anna.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 101.

JOSH ROBERTS
Err...other planets aren’t they?
ANNA BROOKS
Do you realise that most of them
don’t exist anymore?

JOSH ROBERTS
What do you mean?
ANNA BROOKS
Because light takes so long to
reach us most of them are already
dead...they simply burned out
millions on years ago.
Josh looks back up at the stars.

JOSH ROBERTS
That’s quite sad to think about.
Why did they die?
ANNA BROOKS
I don’t really know. My dad used to
tell me all about them when I was
younger.
She looks back up at the stars.

ANNA BROOKS
Sometimes I feel that any minute
now our world will stop spinning.
Then everyone will just die.

JOSH ROBERTS
That’s the most depressing thing
I’ve ever heard.
ANNA BROOKS
That’s just how I feel about life.
(BEAT)
Or I did until I met you.
They look at each other. Slowly they move in and kiss. Just
as they do Anna blacks out from missing her medication and
falls a sleep in Josh’s arms. He shakes her to wake her up.
She doesn’t respond. Holding her he whispers.
JOSH ROBERTS
Anna....You know I said I was
ill...I’m dying.

Anna remains a sleep.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT. HOUSE. DAY

It’s early morning. They slowly make their way towards the
foot of the gravel path up to Anna’s aunts house.
ANNA BROOKS
I’ll meet you back at yours in an
hour.
JOSH ROBERTS
What will do you if they’re in?

ANNA BROOKS
I’ll just grab my stuff and leave.
It’s not like they can physically
stop me.
JOSH ROBERTS
Are you sure you don’t want me to
come with you?
ANNA BROOKS
No, it’s o.k. I think I can take
care of myself.

They hug. Anna makes her way up the gravel path and Josh
walks out of shot. Anna stops just before the house. She
scans all the windows and listens out for any sound. All is
silent. She decides to continue. As she makes her way
towards the door she notices that their car is still there.
She moves over towards it and out of curiosity glances into
the back. She notices that the seats are down and that there
appears to be sand on them. She moves away from the car and
towards the front door. She quietly opens it and steps
inside.

CUT TO:

INT. HOUSE. DAY

Inside she stops and listens again. All is quiet. The house
appears to be empty. She moves over to ascend the stairs
when, out of the corner of her eye, she notices the answer
phone on the table in the hallway is flashing. Out of
curiosity she plays the message. It’s from her mum.

NICOLE BROOKS

in. Just calling to say I got your

message. I’m so sorry for all the
trouble Anna has put you through.
She’ll be severely disciplined when
she gets back. Thanks for letting
me know that she’ll be coming back
on the train this afternoon and
that I no longer need to drive up.
Thanks for putting up with her and
I’m so sorry again. Speak soon.
It beeps off.
Anna stares at the answerphone, slightly confused, for a few
moments longer. She turns towards the stairs and moves over
to continue back up them.
CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM. DAY

Anna enters her room. She stops and stands stunned. All of
her possessions have gone. She moves forward from the door
and starts to look around for them. She opens up drawers,
looks under the bed and through the wardrobe, but everything
of hers has gone. The room is like she has never been there.
She gives up looking and leaves.
CUT TO:

INT. HALLWAY. DAY

She makes her way to the top of the stairs when she suddenly
stops. She can hear the front door opening and the sound of
her aunts and uncles voices. Looking round for somewhere to
go she see’s their bedroom door open. She moves inside,
closing it behind her.
CUT TO:

INT. JENNIFER/DAVIDS BEDROOM. DAY

Inside Anna leans against the door to hear. After a few

seconds she realises that the sounds are getting louder and
louder and that they must be coming up the stairs. She turns
around and looks about for any possible hiding place. She
see’s the wardrobe and quickly moves over to it. She gets
inside and closes the door. Once again she tries to listen
through the door to any sound outside. She can no longer
hear them. They haven’t come into their bedroom.

Relieved, She leans back against the wall in the wardrobe

and as she does it moves. She turns around to look at it.
She gently pushes it and it begins to open. She stops to
look at it. Realising that it’s some sort of secret room,
such as an old priest hole, she decides to go on through.
She closes the secret door behind her. Inside, in the
darkness, she feels around for a light switch. Finding one
she flicks it on and it lights up, illuminating a small
staircase. The stairs appear to lead towards the attic. She
starts to ascend it and as she does, she notices that the
steps feel slightly slippery. She looks down at them and
notices sand on them. She lifts her foot and brushes the
sand off, before continuing upwards.
CUT TO:

INT. ATTIC. DAY

Anna reaches the top of the steps and once again feels
around for a light switch. She finds one and flicking it on
it illuminates the attic. The only light emits from a single
light bulb hanging from the center of the roof. In the
center of the attic are ten or so large wooden trunks. Anna
turns the light for the staircase off and moves over towards
the trunks. She stares at them for moment before noticing on
of them has sand all over it.

She tentatively starts to open it. Inside are all her

possessions. She slowly starts to take a few of them out and
look at them. Putting them to one side she starts to dig
deeper down. As she makes her way down the trunk she starts
to find clothes which don’t belong to her. She looks at them
curiously before moving on down. She she reaches the bottom
she moves aside the last layer of clothes. Underneath the
small skull of a child is suddenly revealed. Startled, she
steps back a pace. She quickly puts her hand over her mouth
to stop herself screaming. She looks around for any noise,
but all is quiet. She moves back over to the trunk and looks
in again. The skull silently stares back out at her. Around
it she notices other bones, making up the complete skeleton
of a child. She turns her attention to the other trunks. She
moves over and opens them one by one. Each one contains the
same: childrens clothes and bones. She moves over to the
last trunk and opens it.
Inside the box is full of ice cubes. She parts the top layer
of cubes and buried within is the mutilated body of Lydia.
Anna stumbles back and falls to the floor in shock and
horror. She sits there for a couple of seconds trying to
contemplate what she has just discovered when suddenly she
realises that she can hear voices again. She turns her
attention to the top of the stairs. The sound is coming from
down below.

INT. JENNIFER/DAVIDS BEDROOM. DAY

Jennifer and David are by the wardrobe. The door to the
secret stairs is open. Jennifer turns the light on and looks
up. She turns round towards David whom is stood behind her.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
There’s someone up there.

DAVID COLLINGWOOD
I’ll go and get the shotgun.
David walks out of shot.

CUT TO:

INT. ATTIC. DAY

Anna frantically looks around for somewhere to hide. She
see’s an old bookcase in the corner. She turns the attic
light off and feeling around in the darkness makes her way
quietly but quickly towards it. She squeezes herself into
the space between it and the wall and crouches down. Her
eyes are fixated on the top of the stairs.

CUT TO:

INT. JENNIFER/DAVIDS BEDROOM. DAY

Jennifer continues to stand by the wardrobe. David walks
back into shot with his shotgun. Together they begin to
ascend the stairs.

INT. ATTIC. DAY

We cut back to a close up for Anna’s terrified eyes. She
continues to stare towards the top of the stairs. We cut to
her point of view as the sound of footsteps get louder and
louder.

EXT. HOUSE. DAY

It’s the next day. Josh is stood at the bottom of the
Collingwoods drive. He stares up towards the house. All is
quiet. Then he see’s the front door open and out steps
Jennifer. She see’s him and starts to walk down towards him.
Josh looks around trying to decide whether to walk away or
wait to speak to Jennifer. Before he has a chance to decide
she reaches him.
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
I suppose you’re looking for Anna.
JOSH ROBERTS
Is she here?
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
She’s gone.
Josh looks down towards the floor before looking back up.
JOSH ROBERTS
Do you have a number I could call
her on or an address?
JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
No.
Jennifer turns to walk away, before turning back.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
It’s probably in everyone’s best
interests if you don’t come around
here again!

Jennifer turns around and walks back before Josh has a

chance to respond. He silently watches her walk back up the
path before turning round and slowly walking away.
CUT TO:

EXT. JOSH’S HOUSE. DAY

Josh reaches his front door. As he reaches into his pocket
to retrieve his keys he senses someone is stood behind him.
He turns around.
ANNA BROOKS
Hello.
Josh jumps.

JOSH ROBERTS
Anna! I thought you’d gone home. I
just spoke to your aunt and...
Anna steps forward and cuts him off mid sentence.

ANNA BROOKS
Listen. I’ve just found everything
out. It’s all up there in their
attic.

JOSH ROBERTS
What is? What have you found out?
ANNA BROOKS
They’re still killing and eating
children.

JOSH ROBERTS
What!?
ANNA BROOKS
There’s boxes and trunks full of
bones and clothes...they killed
Lydia and you were right...they
killed your dad. He found out what
was going on and they killed him to
silence him.

JOSH ROBERTS
I don’t understand. Why would they
still be doing this?
Anna shakes her head.

ANNA BROOKS
I don’t know.
JOSH ROBERTS
Who is involved?

ANNA BROOKS
My aunt, uncle, Abigails parents,
Mr Phillips. Pretty much everyone.
Josh stumbles back and sits down on his front steps in
shock.
JOSH ROBERTS
How can you possibly know all of
this?

(CONTINUED)

ANNA BROOKS
I told you, it’s all there in the
attic. Come on, we have to be quick
before they destroy it all.

Anna turns around and starts to walk down the path. Josh
quickly gets up to his feet to follow her.
TIME CUT TO:

INT. JENNIFER/DAVIDS BEDROOM. DAY

They arrive in her aunts bedroom.
ANNA BROOKS
It’s through there. In the
wardrobe.
Josh looks confused. Anna points towards the wardrobe.
JOSH ROBERTS
Are you sure?

ANNA BROOKS
Yes.
They move over and open the door. He pushes against the back
wall and again the door opens. Josh switches the light on
and together they go up the stairs.
CUT TO:

INT. ATTIC. DAY

They reach the top of the stairs and Josh turns the light
on. Inside the attic half the boxes have already gone. They
move over to one of the remaining one’s. Josh looks at it.

ANNA BROOKS
Open it.
Josh opens the lid and inside are children’s clothes and
bones.

ANNA BROOKS
I told you.
JOSH ROBERTS
We have to go to the police.

They quickly go to leave but as they reach the top of the

stairs David is stood there. Josh stumbles back a pace in
shock. David is once again holding his shotgun. Jennifer
appears out of the darkness behind David.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
I thought I told you to stay away
from here!
Josh continues to move backwards as David and Jennifer enter
the attic.

DAVID COLLINGWOOD
What do you think you’re doing boy?
Josh and Anna continue to move backwards.

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
What did you think you were going
to do?
DAVID COLLINGWOOD
We should have done this years ago.
Like father like son.
David starts to raise his gun. Just then, Josh’s foot
touches something on the floor behind him. He looks round to
see what it is. Lying there on the floor is Anna’s cold dead
body. She has a large RED gunshot wound in her stomach.
Speechless Josh looks up to the girl standing next to him.
Anna smiles at him and holds his hand.
ANNA BROOKS
It’ll be o.k.

She turns back round towards Jennifer and David. Josh also
turns round towards David and Jennifer. We cut to his point
of view. David and Jennifer are now surrounded by children.
David and Jennifer don’t appear to be able to see them. The
small boy from Anna’s bedroom stands closest to David. He
reaches out and grabs the end of the shotgun. David,
slightly startled, pulls it back.
DAVID COLLINGWOOD
What the hell was that?

JENNIFER COLLINGWOOD
What are you doing? Just shoot him.
Bloody shoot him!
David raises the gun again, but the boy grabs it a second
time. This time David pulls it more violently. As the gun
slips from the small boys hand it swings round clipping the

light bulb. It smashes the light and the attic is plunged

into complete darkness. He hear the sounds of the children
attacking David and Jennifer. The gun goes off briefly
illuminating the attic and allowing us to see for a second
the children tearing into them. More darkness and sounds
follow before the gun goes off a second time. The shot tears
a hole in the roof allowing light to filter through. We see
the bodies of David and Jennifer collapse to the floor. The
children crouch over them and start to eat the remains.

Anna and Josh are sat on the front steps of her aunts house.
They look up towards the night sky. Josh turns to her as if
to say something, but he can’t quite find the words.
ANNA BROOKS
I’ll see you soon
Josh looks back up towards the night sky again, when he
looks back round towards Anna she is gone.
We cut to a wide shot of Josh alone on the steps.
Cut to a closing shot of the night sky.
