The Romanticism Style
A Romanticism refers to the cultural movement of the late 18th century through
most of the mid 19th Century. During the time period, artists rejected the classical
ideals that were the trademark of the Enlightenment. Instead they viewed their art as
an outlet for human expression and emotion. Most of the art in Europe during the 19th
Century was influenced by the Romantic Movement. While the movement was most
popular in France, Germany and England, it’s influence was far reaching through the
rest of Europe and the United State.
The main ingredients of Romantic Art include: • Religion- During the French
Revolution, Christianity was banned, in favor of the Cult of Reason. Romantic art
reflected the religious revival, embracing Christianity and incorporating it into many
styles and mediums. • Nationalism- The idea of nations was a new concept in Western
Europe in the late 18th Century. With the emergence of the United States, and then the
French Republic.
I chose some of the most famous artists of the Romanticism Style such as Delacroix
Eugene, Francesco Hayez), William Etty, Francisco de Goya, Karl Brulloff .
But there are some interesting artists: John Constable, Theodore Gericault
Eduard Gaertner, John Everett Millais, Edward Burne-Jones and more who worked
also in the Romanticism Style and painted landscapes.
Delacroix Eugene
Delacroix(1798- 1863) is numbered among the
greatest and most influential of French painters. He is
most often classified as an artist of the Romantic
school. His remarkable use of color was later to
influence impressionist painters and even modern
artists such as Pablo Picasso.

Francisco José de Goya
( 1746 – 1828) was a Spanish painter and
printmaker regarded both as the last of the Old
Masters and as the first of the romantism and
moderns. Goya was a court painter to the
Spanish Crown and a chronicler of history. The
subversive and subjective element in his art, as
well as his bold handling of paint, provided a
model for the work of later generations of
artists, notably Manet and Picasso.

one of the transitional artists between the schools of
neoclassicism and romanticism and the first Russian
painter to gain widespread recognition in the West.

enormous composition painted in Italy in 1830-1833,
