Itdoesn’ttakelongfortheshelvesatthegrocerystoretobecomeemptysoonafteradisaster.Orevenbefore,ifthere’senoughofawarning.Withinhours,basicitemslikewater,bread,ormilkcanliterally“disappear”.ThinkabouthowspoiledweareasAmericans.Atypicalruntothesupermarketandwecomehomewithjustaboutanythingandeverythingwecouldwant.Regardlessofwhattheseasonis,wecanhavefreshstrawberries,oranges,peppers‐again,justaboutanything–allyearround!Nowthinkaboutitalittlemore.HowisitpossiblethatsomeoneinIllinoiscanenjoystrawberriesinthewinter?AndafamilyinAlabamacanbakedelicioushomemadebreadwithwheatfromoutwest?Rarely,dowethinkaboutthetransportationanddeliverysystemsthatmakesuchthingspossible.Wehavegottensousedtohavinganenormousvarietyoffoodatourfingertipsthatit’shardtoimagineanythingless.Butwhatif,forsomereason,thosedeliverytrucksnevermadeittoourstores?HaveyoueverbeentothestorethenightbeforeThanksgiving?Therearecertainthingsthatyoujustcan’tbuy–becausethey’resimplynotthere!Notevenone!Everyonewentshoppingforthesameingredientsforthesamefavoritedish.Evenadayortwoaftertheholidaytheinventoryisn’treplenished.Doyouknowwhy?
Becausethetypicalgrocerystorehasonlyathreedaysupplyoffood
.Thatmeansthatifsomethingdelayedthedeliverytruckfrombringinginanewsupply,thestorewouldonlyhaveenoughinventoryinstockforthreedays.Andit’sverypossiblethatitcouldbeevenlessthanthat!Especiallyifeveryoneisinpanicmode!Therehaverecentlybeenmentionsofapossiblefoodshortage–righthereinthegoodol’USA!HowlongwillitbebeforetheaverageAmericanconsumerstartstothinkmoreaboutthis?Isitpossiblethatpeoplewillstartpanickingandhoardingbasicgroceryitems?Withoutstrategicplanning,wecouldverywellseefoodsuppliesdisappearwithinhours–ifthereeverwasapanic.
