TELNET
 Telnet is Terminal Emulation Program to
login to the remote systems. It uses TCP.

 Telnet can be used for any OS commands -


file transfer, e-mails, on line services etc.

 Telnet connections can also be established


using hyperlinks on web pages.

 Telnet does not offer good protection against


third parties that - observer can view traffic
between a client and server.

TELNET Connection
 The characters typed in the telnet sessions,
is not displayed on the monitor, but is
encoded as an ASCII character and
transmitted to a remote Telnet Server.

 At the server, ASCII characters are


interpreted and displayed.

 The output is also encoded in ASCII text and


sent to the telnet client which displays on its
monitor.

TELNET
 Data & Control over same connection. Telnet
servers listen on TCP port 23.

 TCP connection is maintained for the


duration of Telnet session, which can remain
alive for hours, days, or weeks at a time.

Remote Login
 Remote login system is used for accessing
remote computer resources.

 rlogin is an alternative remote login for hosts


that runs Unix/Linux OS.

 rlogin starts a terminal session on the remote


host. It establishes a telnet session.

 The remote host must be running a rlogind


service. rlogin also uses the standard
authorization mechanism.
