Report / Christmas Social

5-7 Race Calendar

Christmas is coming and with it lots of holiday food and merriment. This can be a really tricky
time of year to stick with a running program. As commitments add up and the temperatures
drop, sometimes it is hard to fit in a daily run. Try making an appointment with yourself and
mark runs on your calendar just as you would schedule any other appointment. Of course your
fellow red9‟ers will be out there at the usual times to log some chilly December miles. If those
times don‟t fit into your holiday schedule, hook up with a friend from the club and make plans to
enjoy some miles together at a convenient time or make plans to cross-train in the pool or try a
class. The important thing is to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle over this sometimes
challenging time of the year.

If you need a little something extra to keep you going over the holidays, marathon training kicks
off on December 4th. It is not too late for last minute sign-ups, so get your forms turned in at
the front desk today.

Be sure to mark your calendar for the Christmas Lights Run and Social which is scheduled for
Thursday, December 16th at 6:00 p.m. We will take a leisurely jog through the “neighborhood”
to enjoy some Christmas lights and then head to Boogie‟s after for some holiday cheer and run-
ning-themed gift exchange. Even if you can‟t make the run, be sure to join us at Boogie‟s for a
relaxing evening.

Have a wonderful Christmas and a fabulous New Year!

Runner Profile
Featured Runner - Gloria Jones
When/Why did you start Running? Super Dave started my running journey. After several
invites to run with him I finally took him up on it. I have been running ever sense.
Miles last week: About 20
Favorite Distance? 13.1 It‟s challenging, but not exhausting.

Your first Race: Lewis and Clark half marathon 2009

Your last Race: Alton River Road Run 2010
Favorite Race? Lewis and Clark half marathon 2010.
Your mantra is: Finish Strong
Favorite food before a race or long run? I usually try to eat light. I enjoy a granola bar
right before a workout.
Favorite Gadget? I just got my Garmin 305. I‟m not suppose to have it until Christmas
though. However, I have already tried it and love it!!!
Something “strange” you always need on a run? Body Glide. No matter the distance I
have to have it or I fear chaffing.
Amount of races you've done in your life? Twelve
Amount of races you've done this year? Nine
When I can't run, I... am usually doing some other form of exercise. Power Pump, TurboKick, PiYo. You guys should
check out some of these classes as a great way to cross train :)
Music or no Music? If yes, favorite music: I enjoy music if I‟m running alone. If I have someone to run with I don‟t need
music. Most of the time I listen to music that I use in my classes. It‟s a good time for me to review old routines or learn
new ones. I have even choreographed some routines during my runs.
Favorite book? The Bible. The only book I‟ll read over and over.
Favorite Movie? I love “The Phantom of the Opera”. I have only seen the movie. One day I will make it to the Fox to see
it.
Favorite Runner? I can‟t really say that I have a favorite runner. I love being part of a group that is encouraging to so
many people in all fitness levels. If it wasn‟t for the diversity in this group I would have never started to run. It is great
to have experienced runners as well as beginners. The Red9Runners perfectly fits the “for ALL” mentality that is a part
of the YMCA‟s mission.
Favorite brand of apparel? I like whatever feels comfortable.
Favorite brand of shoes? Asics
How many pairs of running shoes do you have? One to run in and I have 3 retired pairs that I use while I cross train.
Fuel on long run or race is: Sports Beans.
Last/current injury: I haven‟t had any real injuries. I have some minor aches and pains in my knees and ankles from time
to time. New shoes usually fix that.
PR you're most proud of: Lewis and Clark half marathon 2010. 2:01:37
Next Challenge ahead: GO! St. Louis Marathon
A Goal further ahead you'd like to get to someday: After doing the sprint tri in Woodriver I have thought about a half
ironman. However, I would need a new bike and I‟m not sure if that is going to happen any time soon.
Why do you run? I run because it‟s something I can challenge myself in. You can always compete against your best time.
I run because it gives me some time to myself. With four kids getting out for an hour or two is nice.

Running & Racing Report
November 6th was a very busy day for the red9‟ers. Keith,
Jen, Paula, Paula, Eric and Jeanette represented the
red9runners at the Maryville Turkey Trot in Drost Park while
Donna, Darrell, Miriam and Cheri ran a 30K Relay in Forest
Park benefitting the Christian Active Center of E. St. Louis.
That same day, Kari Ulrich ran along with her daughter Randi
Kai and other Girls on the Run participants in the Girls on
the Run 5K also held at Forest Park. A little farther from
home, Chuck ran the Monumental Half Marathon in Indian-
apolis, IN. We had our first real taste of fall but in spite of the cold and wind, I am happy
to report that everyone did well in their races.

Cheri, Darrell, Debbie, Donna, Gloria, Julie and Libby burned a few of those Thanksgiving
calories at The Great River Road 10 Mile Run in Alton this past Saturday followed by some
tasty food at Fast Eddie‟s. We even had a few pr‟s and one medal for the day. Way to go!

Be sure to send your info to be included in the Running and Racing Report.
Happy Running!
