November 30, 2010: NIIRA RADIA,
the lobbyist at the heart of India’s
audacious multi-billion telecom swindle,
inaugurated a Krishna temple she funded
in south Delhi on her birthday - that,
interestingly, coincides with Indira
Gandhi’s.
Those present on the occasion said
Radia prayed for long, presumably
seeking divine intervention to wriggle out
of the country’s biggest scandal. Before
the temple visit, notices from the country’s
Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income
Tax (IT) Department and the Central
Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had reached

loans provided by public sector banks to
2G scam-tainted companies are not
limited to Unitech and STel. Investigations
carried out by The Pioneer show that
many more companies were liberally
funded by these banks even when the
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was
probing criminal conspiracy in allotment
of telecom licences to these firms.
Records available at the Registrar
of Companies show that public sector
banks provided loans worth more than Rs
26,000 crore to five companies involved
in the 2G spectrum scandal.
Most of these loans were disbursed
by these banks after the CVC and Central
Bureau of Investigation had started
investigating the spectrum scandal in mid-
2009. The CAG has since then
recommended cancellation of the “illegal
licences” of all these five companies —
Swan Telecom, Unitech, Loop, Datacom
(Videocon) and STel.

Time will tell whether the prayers will
help Radia, the only female lobbyist
among Delhi’s top-of-the-line power
brokers. A picture of grace in both saris
and business suits, her grasp of both
human psychology and technical jargon
gives her a comfort level with the rich
and powerful as well as wannabes.
She grew with the BJP, made
inroads into the Congress inner circle,
and vibed well with the CPM. But she
alienated her own staff with her
workaholism, constantly egging them on
with the Nike tagline, “Just do it”. Her
personal wealth is whispered to be
around Rs. 500 crore but that is difficult
to establish.
Interestingly, in what started out as
a telephone tap by the IT Department’s
Directorate General of Investigations to
probe violations related to TDS (tax
deducted at source) has turned into a
full-scale, multi-agency inquiry by the
government about whether Radia is so
embedded in Delhi’s politics that she can
make/unmake ministers or manipulate
government policy to suit powerful
corporate clients.
What the ED is trying to establish
is the money trails that seem to wind
through her corporate communications
venture. Knowing this, she avoided, on
medical grounds, the first set of notices
sent to her, using the time to get politicians

got Rs1,917 crore from the Punjab National
Bank and the Bank of Baroda. Shockingly,
Swan - currently known as Etisalat DB India
- managed to get around Rs 2,000 crore
in loans even before it was awarded the
telecom licence. The company’s
statements to the Registrar of Companies
show that the SBI provided to it the
maximum loan of Rs 747 crore, followed
by Punjab National Bank (`500 crore), Bank
of Baroda (Rs 400 crore), IDFC (Rs 200
crore) and IL&FS (Rs 70 crore).
In a clear indication that strings were
pulled to manage these loans, records
show that when the banks funded Swan
between October 20 and October 24,
2007, the company had not even received
the licence and spectrum.
The final allotment of spectrum and
licence came three months after last
instalment of the loan amount was
disbursed.

The cosmic dance of
Obama on Newsweek

A recent issue of Newsweek has on Hindu websites, Hindus on social media
its cover page President Barack Obama sites, started reacting to this portrayal of
one of their major gods. This also caught
the attention of several scholars of
Hinduism. Unlike many other issues in the
past, this latest episode of Hindu deities
used or misused in non-religious context in
the West aroused mixed reactions both from
practicing Hindus and from practicing and
non-practicing scholars of Hinduism. Some
shrugged it off saying that portrayal of Hindu
deities is quite common even in the
commercial advertisements in India and that
the Hindu texts were full of such humorous
references to their gods and goddesses.
Others compared and contrasted such
portrayal with Abrahmic religions and
demanded the fair and balanced treatment
of Hinduism in popular culture.
I think in addition to all the above
reactions and responses, there are few
more 'cosmic' questions that we can raise

bureaucrats from that state’s cadre who
are investigating the scam. But no one
wants to get embroiled in the Rs. 1.76 lakh
crore telecom scam.
Encouraged by her political
isolation, the investigating agencies sent
her another set of notices demanding -
this time in strong language - her
presence for a detailed probe. Perhaps
to avoid the media, she landed at the ED
office at 9.15 am on 24 November, even
before her interrogators reported for work.
“We are investigating what could be one
of India’s biggest scandals,” is all
Rajeshwar Singh, a top investigator with
the ED, was willing to tell TEHELKA. By
the time she emerged from the office, the
media had arrived in full force, and she
addressed the barrage of questions with
the polish and panache expected of a
public relations professional. Which
means, of course, that she smoothly gave
the impression of being willing to
cooperate without actually giving any real
information away.
CBI Officials claim they have
evidence that she once worked with data
servers hosted out of Ukraine and had
latest Israeli anti-surveillance gizmos
running on the telephones used by her and
her close aides. The agency has in its
possession 180 hours of candid
conversations that Radia, as chairperson
of Vaishnavi Corporate Communications -
and its sister organisations like Vitcom,
Neucomp, and Neosys - had with
politicians, bureaucrats and a handful of
high-profile journalists. These could put her
at the heart of the telecom scam that
claimed the cabinet berth of Andimuthu
Raja, who is accused of selling lucrative
licences at dirt-cheap prices.
The CBI is also probing what it calls
her nexus with a slew of former bureaucrats
whose brains she picked to bend rules to
the benefit of her clients. These included
conglomerates like the Tatas, Reliance, ITC
and Mahindras, and big-bucks entities like
Lavasa, Star TV, Unitech, Elder Health
Care, Haldia Petrochemicals, Emami and
the HIV/AIDS initiative of the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation.
This week, one of her confidants,
Pradip Baijal, the former telecom and
disinvestment secretary who started the
country’s much-hyped disinvestment
process, was questioned by the CBI for
over four hours for his alleged investments
in African nations like Guinea and Senegal.
“The charges are serious,” admits
ED’s Rajeshwar Singh, refusing to reveal
details. CBI and ED officials told
TEHELKA that there is enough evidence
to prove Radia’s links with retired
bureaucrats like Ajay Dua, former
secretary, Department of Industrial Policy
and Promotion (DIPP), CM Vasudev,
former finance secretary, SK Narula,
former Airports Authority of India
chairman, and Akbar Jung, the former civil
aviation secretary.
The IT investigations revealed that
apart from managing the telecom licences
for builder Unitech, among others, Radia
also handled and facilitated cross-border
transfer of funds. Intercepted
conversations between Radia and the
allottees of the new telecom licences
suggest that she was a key adviser in
staggering the inflow of funds from outside
India so that no impression could be
created that there was a windfall gain to
the companies.
ED officials have told TEHELKA they
have evidence that Radia was
instrumental in sourcing funds - as much
as Rs. 1,600 crore - for Unitech, one of
the controversial beneficiaries of the
telecom licences. The company
eventually sold a majority stake in the

telecom venture to Norway’s Telenor for
seven times the licence fee it paid.
Worse, some of the conversations
link Radia to Anil Agarwal of the London-
based Vedanta group that has drawn flak
for violating environmental norms at its
billion-dollar mining projects in Orissa’s
Kalahandi district.
It is reliably learnt that the Vendanta
group used Radia to erase what it claimed
was a negative mindset about the group
and its operations in India. As a result,
expensive advertisements extolling the
virtues of Vedanta were published in
newspapers and newsmagazines. But
these did not cut much ice since the
project was scrapped by environment
minister Jairam Ramesh.
Tellingly, the tapes also establish her
links with Sunil Arora, an IAS officer based
in Rajasthan and used by Radia to gain
access to his batchmates in various
ministries. The conversations are a part
of the CBI notes to the Supreme Court.
Arora, who sacrificed his second
tenure as chairman and managing
director (CMD) of Indian Airlines by
attempting to blow the whistle on Civil
Aviation Minister Praful Patel, seems to
have opened many doors for Radia
across India. During his tenure as the
CMD of Indian Airlines (2003-05), seven
aircraft leases were found to have been
channelled to companies that had Radia’s
front companies acting as agents. “We
have evidence that substantial payments
were made to Arora’s Meerut-based
brother by Radia’s company,” said Akshat
Jain, a senior IT official.
For the record, Niira was born to
Sudesh and Iqbal Memon, a trader who
was born a Hindu, on 19 November 1960.
Niira - the extra ‘i’ was added on the advice
of numerologists - and her family had to
flee Africa around the time of the fall of Idi
Amin. Once touted as an emerging
competitor to infamous gun dealer Adnan
Khashoggi, Memon changed track in
London and opened an aviation lease
broking business.
The natural heir to the family
business, Radia also worked with
Scotland Yard on a job-to-job basis
providing escort cover to its young
recruits. In London, she married Janak
Radia of a wealthy trading family. At some
point, she was also marestried to the
grandson of Rao Birendra Singh,
Haryana’s chief minister in the 1960s, and
went by the name of Niira Yadav.
In 1996, Radia fled to India from UK
after a host of shell companies with paid-
up capital as low as £100 went bust and
came under scrutiny for money
laundering.
First she worked with Sahara
supremo Subrata Roy’s blue-eyed boy
Uttam Kumar Bose, who was managing
Air Sahara. “She worked with us for some
time,” admits Abhijit Sarkar, one of the

directors of Sahara India. But Bose fell
out of favour with Roy when aircraft lease
rentals were found to be as much as 50
percent higher than market rates.
Thereafter, Radia ventured out on her
own. She harboured an ambition to take
over the defunct ModiLuft and rename it
Magic Air, but failed to get the necessary
clearances.
Undaunted, she tied up with aircraft
leasing companies to get planes at the
lowest prices and secured in-principle
approvals for parking slots and peak time
schedules between metros from the state-
owned Airports Authority of India (AAI).
However, at every step she was outwitted
by the powerful private airlines lobby that
ensured that her Gulf-based financiers
pulled out. The crack team of pilots and
aviation professionals she had picked up
from leading airlines, including Malaysian
Airlines, disintegrated after a long
frustrating standby.

Kumar of the BJP.
Sources in the BJP leadership point
out that Radia decided that Crown Air had
reached a dead end when she got clear
signals from the PMO that Kumar was
under a cloud. Nevertheless, Radia
managed to get a large tract of land at
unbelievably low prices during the NDA
regime in the name of Sudesh Foundation,
a charity in her late mother’s memory.
An old IB report points that some of
the objections against giving security
clearance to Radia came from her
dealings with a Mumbai-based person of
doubtful background, Chandu Panjabi,
who was also close to the first family of
the Shiv Sena.
Radia played a role in funding
Agnisaakshi, a movie produced by Binda
Thackeray, son of Shiv Sena supremo
Balasaheb Thackeray. Panjabi was close
to the Thackeray family and is tipped to
have been a former part-owner of Sea
Rock Hotel in Bandra. (Sea Rock was one
of the sites bombed in the 1992 serial blasts
in the city. The property, which changed
hands multiple times, is now run by the Tata
Group’s Indian Hotels Company.)
With a never-say-die attitude and
assiduous networking, Radia developed
a close rapport with Singapore Airlines,
helping it set up a maintenance, repair and
overhaul facility in India. The change in
government policy that disallowed foreign
airlines to enter India was also rumoured
to have been at the behest of her foes
Goyal and Patel.
RADIA’S CHARISMA, connect with
bureaucrats and politicians and alliance
with Kumar opened many doors for her in
Delhi’s bhawans. A former AAI chairman
and a powerful bureaucrat during the NDA
government, SK Narula, remains a close
ally post-retirement, handling some
crucial government liaisons on her behalf.

Pramod Mahajan played a crucial role in
helping the Tata-led management invest
Rs. 1,200 crore of VSNL’s reserves in the
ailing Tata Teleservices. Radia, after three-
four long meetings with Mahajan, not only
managed to build bridges between him
(then telecom minister) and the Tata
group, but also ensured that the VSNL
board proposal - earlier termed as asset
stripping by Mahajan - got cleared with
minor modifications.
Radia’s biggest break came when
she got acquainted with Ratan Tata’s close
aide RK Krishna Kumar, the man trusted
by Tata to translate his airline dreams into
reality.
The Tata-Singapore Airlines alliance
failed but soon Radia made her bigger
debut in the world of public relations - she
had earlier owned an agency called The
Big League - and formed Vaishnavi, which
got the mandate to handle all Tata
companies. With the name of India’s most
respected business house behind her,
Radia started a new journey and shaped
her company into an eight-city operation.
When the Tata Group wanted
criminal proceedings to be initiated
against Dilip Pendse of Tata Finance and
these attempts were foiled by his playing
the ‘Marathi Manoos’ card, he was picked
up by the Economic Offences Wing of
Delhi Police in a much smaller case. He
alleged the show was directed by none
other than Radia, for one of the key
aspects of her strategy was to establish
inroads in the police department, an
instrument she uses subtly yet frequently
to settle scores. So much so, a staffer has
been deployed for the past eight years
only to maintain rapport with ground-level
policemen while Radia chats up senior
officials. Having a hotline with top IPS
officers in important cities is, in fact, a USP
Radia offers her clients.
FORMER DELHI Commissioner of
Police KK Paul was a close friend of
Radia’s, and got his post under the NDA
four months before the Congress-led UPA
came to power. When a former
Maharashtra DGP was made to quit the
post of Mumbai Police Commissioner
overnight in February 2007, there was a
strong buzz that Radia was lobbying hard
to get him a plush posting at the CBI or an
intelligence agency in Delhi. Intelligence
sources do not rule out Radia’s hand in
the controversy surrounding former
Mumbai police commissioner Hassan
Gafoor, who was the top choice to become
Maharashtra DGP before a damaging
interview appeared in a leading weekly
magazine. The beneficiary of the Gafoor
controversy was none other than Anami
Narayan Roy, a close relative of Tata
Motors chief Ravi Kant.
While the reason given for Roy’s exit
as Mumbai police commissioner was the
change of Mumbai Police logo without
approvals, there is a strong buzz that he
came under scrutiny for helping Tata
Communications in a case where there
was prima facie evidence of the company
providing back-end infrastructure and
being in full knowledge of an illegal
international calling operation being run
out of Larsen & Toubro’s information
technology arm’s premises in Mumbai.
The investigating team, including Mumbai
Police’s brightest sleuth Kishore Gayake
- who had spearheaded the investigation
- was transferred from Unit 8 of the Crime
Branch overnight and later resigned under
protest. Incidentally, Roy stays in a plush
South Mumbai residential complex, with
three-four bigwigs of the Tata group,
including Kant, as neighbours.

dream of a commercial airline in late 2004
and brought in a team of aviation

Himachal Pradesh, who was there,
reported to the BJP Parliamentary Party
at our Tuesday meeting last week that
while 140 countries are signatories to the
Convention, 14 have not yet ratified it. And
I feel sorry to note that India is one of these
fourteen.
During the 2009 Lok Sabha election
campaign BJP raised the issue of India’s
illicit assets stashed away abroad in tax
havens like Ivory Coast, Liechtenstein etc.
In this context, the country most
mentioned is Switzerland.
I was therefore pleasantly surprised
to note that the Swiss representative at
the U.N. when he spoke at the world body
on the issue of corruption, and more
specifically on the issue of illicit assets,
he was the most forthright. His statement
merits being quoted extensively.
Mr. Mathias Bachmann, representing
the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to
the United Nations spoke on October 20,
2010 at the 65th session of the General
Assembly and said :
“Corruption poses a serious threat
to economic growth and to development.
While corruption enriches a limited
number of persons, it weakens the fabric
of society, the economy and state
institutions as a whole.
Deeply worried by this problem,
Switzerland has taken determined action
at the national and international levels in
the fight against corruption. This activity
goes hand in hand with its fight against
money laundering and organised crime.
There is often a direct link between
corruption, organized crime and money
laundering, notably with regard to the
mechanisms established by the
authorities to combat these phenomena.
The same applied to the flight of assets
of politically exposed persons, which
often correlates with the lack of good
governance.
The United Nations Convention
against Corruption (UNCAC) is one of the
main international instruments regulating
the return of illicit assets. Switzerland has
participated actively in the drafting and the
strengthening of this convention, which it
ratified in 2009.
Moreover, on the basis of more than
20 years of experience, Switzerland
chaired the UNCAC working group which
led to the adoption of a mechanism for
recovering assets. Switzerland has acted
with great determination in the field of
asset recovery and it is now the state that
has returned the greatest number of
assets stolen by politically exposed
persons. In practice, the return of assets
involves a considerable amount of
preventive activity in order to identify and
to freeze illicit assets in a timely manner.
The ultimate utility of preventive
measures in turn depends on close
international cooperation. In particular the
implementation of due diligence by
financial institutions and of regulations
through international legal assistance are
key elements for guaranteeing the
effectiveness of the fight against money
laundering as a whole.
The effectiveness of international
cooperation depends ultimately on the
political will and on the determination with
which national authorities take action.
With regard to illicit assets, in
September 2010 Swiss parliament
approved a law further facilitating the
return of assets to the people of the
country from which assets have been

show, the effectiveness of the fight against
the misappropriation of assets depends
on the specific measures envisaged by

national parliaments”.
According to the Swiss Bank
Association, Indians have topped the list
of black money depositors at the famous
Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS).
BJP has been campaigning against
illicit funds for a long time. In the 2009
Lok Sabha polls it made this an election
issue. At the outset, Congress leaders
ridiculed the BJP for raising this matter.
But with the passage of time the BJP’s
became a popular demand. Then the
Prime Minister also spoke in its support.
That year we set up a three member
Task Force to study and pursue this matter
on a continuing basis. The three
distinguished members of this team are:
(1) Shri S. Gurumurthy, Chartered
Accountant and investigative writer,
Chennai; (2) Shri Ajit Doval - Security
expert, New Delhi; (3) Dr. R. Vaidyanathan,
Professor of Finance, Indian Institute of
Management, Bangalore.
A recent publication put out by this
Task Force says that estimates of Indian
wealth stashed in tax-havens overseas
vary from $ 500 billions (Rs. 25 lakh
crores) to $ 1.4 trillion (Rs.70 lakh crores).
The publication adds: The maths of the
loot may be disputed, but the fact of loot
cannot be.
As the Swiss representative has
very rightly said at the U.N. the
effectiveness of international cooperation
with regard to asset recovery “depends
on the political will and on the
determination with which national
authorities take action.” During his poll
campaign the Prime Minister had
promised to take action with regard to
Indian wealth in foreign banks in the first
100 days of his tenure. More than 500
days have elapsed, and yet there has
been no movement in this regard. The
reason is utter lack of political will.
No wonder even the U.N.
Convention against Corruption has not
been ratified. Parliament has remained
dysfunctional for two weeks, but
Government refuses to accept the
unanimous demand of the entire
opposition that a J.P.C. probe be ordered
into the stinking scandals that have
recently been exposed.
The country expects the GOI
- to ratify the U.N. Convention
against Corruption
- to set up a Joint Parliamentary
Committee to investigate the string of
scandals that have surfaced lately
- to punish all found guilty
- and lastly to fulfill the promise
made by Dr. Manmohan Singh during the
Lok Sabha poll campaign to bring back to
India the enormous wealth stolen from our
country and deposited in tax havens
abroad.

granted within days of the DB Reality
owners, Shahid Balwa and Vinod Goenka,
taking control of Swan from Anil Ambani’s
Reliance Telecom.
In the ongoing investigation of loan-
for-bribery scam, the CBI is also probing
into the loans provided to DB Reality. The
agency has not yet linked this case with
the huge loans to the spectrum-tainted
companies by the public sector banks.
The Pioneer had on Sunday
reported that Unitech got a loan of Rs
10,000 crore from various pubic sector
banks, including the SBI which doled out
more than Rs 8,000 crore.
The Unitech also made hypothe-
cation agreement with SBI Cap Trustee
Company, a Government of India company,
for Rs 2,500 crore in November 2009.
Another company, STel, got the loan from
IDBI and its associates for Rs 1,538 crore.
Videocon, which got the licence in
the name of Datacom, got a loan of more
than Rs 8,000 crore, of which SBI
provided Rs 1,000 crore and the SBI Cap
Trustees Rs 7,150 crore.

making business in most cases, chooses
to sensationalize even trivial issues such
as the President of a major nation trying
to multi-task his responsibilities. Worse,
even the academic world seems to be suscep-
tible to such sensationalized patterns.
Just as an instance, in the last more
than sixty years of India's independence,
there can be several success stories that
can be role-model for several other
developing nations in the world. However,
what gets most attention of the media -
and of scholars - are the controversial
topics such as the partition of India and
Pakistan in 1947, deployment of martial
law style 'emergency' by Prime Minister
Indira Gandhi in 1975, destruction of the
(Babri) Mosque in 1992, or the Hindu
Muslim violence in 2002. These events
have continued to represent the historic
milestones in the history of independent
India even as the millions of Indians made
remarkable progress in basic literacy and
thousands of Indians reached almost
every part of the USA and the rest of the
world with their software and other
technological skills. Several other
epidemics and other gigantic problems
were quietly eradicated from India.
The success of Indian democracy

academia and media?
One way to interpret this could be to
remind ourselves that the social reformers
like Gandhi and Kabir despite their
vociferous criticism for some of the social
practices, had deep love and reverence
for humans irrespective of their caste,
creed, or religion. This may also be the
place to mention that Lord Shiva (another
manifestation of Lord Nataraja in Hindu
tradition) is often portrayed by Hindus as
one who drinks poison but adorns the
moon on his head. This is frequently
interpreted to mean that the 'good' of
others must be decorated upfront but the
'bad' must be hidden within us. Before
critiquing, criticising, or ridiculing others,
one must find their qualities to appreciate
and magnify. I can only imagine how this
Hindu method of social interactaction
could help foster world peace and
harmony. And in the style of Lord Shiva,
let's meditate on this biggest 'cosmic'
question of our times!

resulted in the suave and progressive
Dayanidhi Maran’s unceremonious exit
from the telecom ministry. It is believed
that Radia once flew to Chennai and
organised a closed-door meeting between
the DMK supremo, his son MK Stalin and
Tata.
Radia is believed to have
engineered a privilege motion against
Praful Patel in Parliament’s monsoon
session of 2005. An unheard of periodical,
UT Independent, saw a sudden increase
in circulation after dubbing the suave Patel

The biggest missing link in Radia’s
operation was a full-fledged “think tank”
that would take her to the big league of
reasoned lobbying. Former AAI CMD
Narula, who was parked in Radia’s Magic

retirement opportunities with corporate

and the low-profile Vasudev, the former
DIPP (Department of Industrial Policy and
Promotion) secretary, were good
cornerstones of Radia’s dreams of
managing the bureaucracy. Rewarding
Narula for having stuck around - he was
also the non-executive chairmanship of
Magic Air - Radia floated Neosys with
Baijal, Vasudev and Narula as partners.
In no time, a couple of Chinese companies
including telecom major Huawei were
being advised by Radia’s company.
THE SUDDEN rise of Radia, her
frequent visits to Singapore and the
prospective investors from West Asia and
the Asia-Pacific raised many an eyebrow.
Reportedly, some of the large cash
transactions were found to be routed
through a code name resembling hers.
At the same time, her unhindered
growth surprised many. Windfall gains
came from managing a massive Reliance
Industries Ltd (RIL) public relations
mandate from Mukesh Ambani, India’s
richest man. Radia formed Neucom to
manage the RIL account. With India’s two
largest industrialists in her fold, earning
her a rumoured Rs 100 crore per annum,
Radia left every established player far
behind within six years of setting up shop.
Like some other public relations
firms based in Delhi, Radia too branched
out from working with corporates to doing
PR for state governments. She worked
closely with Telugu Desam Party (TDP)
chief Chandrababu Naidu and Gujarat
Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Naidu hired
Radia for “strategic PR counsel” for
Andhra Pradesh during his last stint while
it is rumoured that she was instrumental
in getting Tata’s Nano project out of a
volatile Bengal and into Gujarat.
If the spectrum scam weren’t so big,
with its potential to swallow many careers,
one would say that this savvy survivor has
enough fire in her belly to keep going. But
the business she is in requires the
confidence of both politicians and
corporates and they’re in it for money, not
love. Besides, it doesn’t pay to work with
someone whose image is sullied.

Prince is pwned,
and how!

To distract himself from the
Congress’s miserable performance in the
Bihar Assembly election despite his
energetic campaign of slander and
calumny, Mr Rahul Gandhi went on a
three-city tour of Gujarat last Friday. But
if he was looking forward to hordes of
fawning supplicants gathering at
Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Rajkot to pay
homage to their Prince and swear undying
loyalty to the Dynasty, he was in for a rude
surprise. In each city he was baldly told
by brash youngsters about Chief Minister
Narendra Modi’s development agenda
and how it had placed Gujarat on the fast
track to rapid growth. So why was he
cavilling against the man to whom credit
goes for fashioning the model for effective
governance? In Ahmedabad a young girl,
disregarding the heir apparent’s exalted
status, got into an argument with him. “I
challenge you to name Congress leaders
who can measure up to Narendra Modi
on development work,” she tauntingly
asked Mr Rahul Gandhi. Obviously India’s
middle-aged Prince who fervently hopes
the septuagenarian Regent will one day
step aside to let him sit on the masnad of
Delhi and not do unto him what the Queen
has done unto Prince Charles, did not
take kindly to such harangue.
And so he snapped at those dazzled
by Mr Narendra Modi’s ‘minimum
Government, maximum governance’
agenda: “Mao also developed China but
he caused destruction to the country too.”
The feisty young student, refusing to be
put down by the Prince’s snub, retorted:
“You are referring to the Gujarat riots. Both
Muslims and Hindus died in that violence.”
Stunned that a commoner should have
the temerity to call the bluff of the scion
of the Dynasty, he walked out of the
meeting, muttering something to the effect
that he was “getting late”. We don’t know
what transpired after that, but a fair guess
would be the youngsters burst into
raucous laughter and reached for their cell
phones to text the story of how they had
lyk, pwned da Prince. (No, the words are
not misspelt; to learn what they mean, and
to be uber cool, look up the Urban
Dictionary. I am learning.)
This is not the first time that Mr Rahul
Gandhi, the great hope of the Congress
and therefore of the country, has had to
face a rough time while playing evangelist.
Earlier this year, on February 2, the
Congress general secretary who can do
no wrong and whose dismal failure is the
stuff of which grand political triumph is
constructed, had to offer a grovelling
apology to the students of Lalit Narayan
Mithila University at Darbhanga in Bihar
after bad-mouthing Gujarat and Mr
Narendra Modi.
Addressing the students at the start
of what the party faithful had billed as a
two-day visit to the State to “shore up
support for the Congress”, the Prince

thundered: “For India to be changed
(presumably into the bhooka-nanga
Bharat of his dreams) Gujarat needs to
be changed first.” All hell broke loose in
the hall as outraged students turned on
him with remarkable ferocity. “This
meeting is not a platform for making
political statements,” one of them shouted.
Another student caustically asked,
“What about the condition of Bihari
youth in Congress-ruled
Maharashtra and even under the
Central rule of your party?” A third
demanded, “Why are you involving
Gujarat here?” A visibly rattled
Rahul Gandhi sought to pacify the
angry students, saying it was “just
a slip of the tongue” and that he
meant to say “For India to be
changed, Bihar needs to be
changed first.” That was an
unambiguous statement: Bihar
needs to get rid of the JD(U)-BJP alliance
in power. It only served to make the
students see red and bedlam followed.
The Prince had to virtually flee the venue.
That evening, news channels,
including the ever-so-loyal NDTV and
CNN-IBN, showed footage of the meeting
released by the Congress in which the
Prince was seen boldly denouncing
Gujarat and by implication Mr Narendra
Modi, with anchors approvingly nodding
their heads. The rest of the tape had been
carefully sliced off. To the horror of the
Congress and its publicists, the full tape
surfaced on YouTube, where it still exists.
But let’s get back to the Bihar
Assembly election and the massive
mandate for the JD(U)-BJP alliance which
has swept the polls, demolishing both
‘secular’ foes and ‘secular’ myths. The
RJD’s decimation — Ms Rabri Devi was
booted out of Raghopur by her kinsmen
and lost in the other Yadav-dominated
‘safe’ seat she contested too — and Mr
Lalu Prasad Yadav’s subsequent
redundancy in Bihar politics were not
entirely unexpected. Nor did anybody
seriously expect Mr Ram Vilas Paswan
to be sworn in as Chief Minister with an
Osama bin Laden lookalike as his deputy.
What, however, has come as a
stunner is the rout of the Congress: Not
only has the party managed to halve the
seats it held in the last Assembly, it has
also lost votes across the State. The bulk
of the Congress’s candidates had been
carefully hand-picked under the
supervision of the Prince if not by him and
if Akbar Road gossip is to be believed each
of them was paid a fortune towards election
expenses. Mr Rahul Gandhi, sleeves
rolled, led the Congress’s campaign from
the front with Ms Sonia Gandhi providing
him with covering fire. He addressed 19
“mammoth” rallies covering more than a
hundred constituencies. And his recurring
refrain was that the JD(U)-BJP
Government had squandered all the
money given by New Delhi instead of
putting Bihar on the path of development.
People gawked at his helicopter and
baulked at his bare-faced lie. And voted
with their feet.
Meanwhile, in the studios of news
channels in Delhi, disbelief and horror ran
high as the enormity of the Congress’s
defeat emerged the day the results were
declared. As my friend on Twitter

‘experts’ desperately looked for “the dark
lining to the silver cloud”. When they

Gold plating
work at
Tirumala
'illegal': HC
Hyderabad, November 29, 2010: A
division bench of the Andhra Pradesh
High Court today held that the gold plating
work of the sanctum sanctorum of famous
Tirumala temple undertaken by the
Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanam (TTD) was
"illegal and unconstitutional".
The bench comprising Justice B
Prakasha Rao and Justice Reddy Kantha
Rao found fault with the TTD for taking up
the project in a hurry and in a whimsical
manner.
The TTD had announced Anantha
Swarnamaya Pathakam and solicited
donations in gold for the scheme.
The petitioners, including Janata
Party president Subramaniam Swamy,
who appeared in court as party in person,
and IPS officer G Raghava Reddy among
others, contended that rare inscriptions on
walls of the temple would be destroyed if
the gold plating work is undertaken.
The petitioner argued that the
inscriptions have religious value and the
main temple will be weakened as more
than 1400 rivets would be drilled into the
temple walls during the gold plating work.
However, the TTD argued that these
inscriptions were photographed,
translated and published and took a stand
that it was a secular activity.
The court remarked that the activity
cannot form part of secular activity and as such
was without any jurisdiction and in violation of
article 25 and 26 of the Indian constitution.
The bench also took into
consideration, report of the Archaeological
Survey of India (ASI) which said that the
gold plating will damage the inscriptions
and the structure in the long run.
The bench asserted that the
inscriptions pertain to the temple deity and
are of immense value. It pointed out that no
project report was prepared for the project
which reflected the whimsical approach.
Dharma Sabha
cancelled
On behalf of TTD in Andhra Pradesh,
Sri PVRK Prasad conducted two
Sanatana Dharmacharya Sabha in 2006
and 2007. Sadassus (gatherings) are
conducted to discuss spiritual, religious,
ethical and moral aspects of Sanatana
Dharma; to make the Endowment officials
responsible to protect, propagate and
preserve Sanatana Dharma; etc. etc. As
many as 60 Acharyas, Swamijis,
Peethadhiapthis and Hindu Leaders
participated and provided valuable
suggestions to TTD.
The 2010 Dharmacharya
Conference was scheduled to be held in
October 2010, where 68 saints were
invited.
Sri Adikeasavulu Naidu, a liquor
baron was a appointed as Chairman Of
TTD. It appears that Adikesavulu Naidu,
who wanted to be re-appointed as
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TTD
for another two year period, approached
Sri Veerappa Moily to cancel the meeting
for a number of reasons. Moily and Ahmed
Patel, General Secretary of AICC,
complained to Sonia Gandhi about this
Dharmacharya Conference. Sonia
Gandhi in turn, called the then Chief
Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri Rosaiah
and ordered the cancellation of this event.

by the corporate sector which itself is
illegal under the DGCA Rules. I find that
often Ms. Sonia Gandhi and family have
traveled to Dubai and then traveled
onwards on private jets provided by
dubious Arab business interests to
Europe. It is not clear on what passport
they have traveled. In Dubai they were
felicitated by agencies of countries which
are hostile to India including that of
Pakistan.
You can no more not take a stand
when evil is permeating in the country in
the form of terrorism, religious conversion
and demographic infiltration. The ill-gotten
money in billions of dollars equivalent, the

The title for this article I have derived
from the historic speech of Mahatama
Gandhi at Bombay on August 9 1942
when he gave the clarion call of QUIT
INDIA to the British in India.
In this context, I cannot help
recalling the famous speech of Oliver
Cromwell to the Rump Parliament in
England on 20 April 1653. In 1653, after
learning that Parliament was attempting
to stay in session despite an agreement
to dissolve, and having failed to come up
with a working constitution, Oliver
Cromwell's patience ran out. On 20 April,
1653 he harangued the members of the
Rump Parliament. This speech does not
survive but has often been paraphrased,
for instance in the Book of Days: "You
have sat too long for any good you have
been doing lately ... Depart, I say; and let
us have done with you. In the name of
God, Go!"
These very words of Cromwell were
used by Lord Amery against Prime
Minister Neville Chamberlain in a moment
of high drama during the notorious
Norway Debate in the House of Commons
in May 1940. After a string of military and
naval disasters were announced, Lord
Amery famously attacked Chamberlain's
secularists love to hate.
India deserves far better than a
Regent who prefers silence over

watch the country has been looted and

Roy, Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani
and others were on Monday booked on
charges of sedition by Delhi Police for their
"anti-India" speech at a seminar here last
month.
The filing of the FIR came following
a directive from a local court on Saturday
on a petition filed by Sushil Pandit who
alleged that Geelani and Roy made anti-
India speeches at a conference on "Azadi-
the Only Way" on October 21, a senior
police official said.
Roy and others were charged under
sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting
enmity between classes), 153B
(imputations, assertions prejudicial to
national integration), 504 (insult intended
to provoke breach of peace) and 505
(false statement, rumour circulated with
intent to cause mutiny or offence against
public peace.
"These sections have to be read with
Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities
Prevention Act of 1967," the official said.
Roy and Geelani had shared the
dais with Maoist sympathiser Vara Vara
and others. Geelani was heckled by the
audience.
With the case being registered, Roy
and others now face arrest. The sections
invoked are non-bailable and if arrested,
they have to approach court for bail.
SRK gives in to Shiv
Sena pressure

Rukh Khan seems to have given in to the
