Top 10 Books Checked Out in 2010

Loudoun County Public Libraries share the top 10 books checked out during 2010.

As the page turns on a new year, we can take a look back on the pages that were turned in the lives of
local readers. The top ten books checked out of Loudoun County Public Libraries were:

1. The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown

2. The Help by Kathryn Stockett
3. Deliver Us From Evil by David Baldacci
4. I, Alex Cross by James Patterson
5. First Family by David Baldacci
6. Worst Case by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge
7. U is for Undertow by Sue Grafton
8. The 9th Judgment by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
9. Swimsuit by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro

Jennifer West, manager of the Ashburn Branch of Loudoun County Public Libraries, said the reason why these books made the top ten is because their
popularity has lasted for months and months.

Although most of the books on the list are by James Patterson and David Baldacci, West said these are books that have die-hard fans.

"These authors have a loyal fan base and they also build on previous successes by featuring the same characters or settings," West said. "It's like your
favorite TV show; you have to tune in if you want to find out what happens."

West has not read all of the books on this list, but she said that all the librarians in each branch have read at least one of them. This makes it so anyone
coming in looking for a certain book has a librarian to connect with who can help him or her find the right book.

Another reason that the duplication of authors is word of mouth: from talk shows, to radio shows or friends according to West.

"We find that the most popular books tend to be the ones that people turn to in order to get away from their normal day-to-day and enter another world,
" West said. "They usually feature fast-paced plots and exciting twists and turns. People like to take a break by reading these page-turners."
