LFE needs to correct a misunderstanding. Bill Evans’
‘widow, Nenete Evans, was never seperated from him as
stated in a previous issue.
Pianist David Benoit's new CD, Lerter To Evan (GRP
9687) is number 3 on Billboard Magazine top jazz alban
chart forthe week ending February 27, 1993. Also according
to Jazziz Magazine the same CD is number 5 in their “top 40
Jjazzairplay list" I'm looking forward to reviewing it in these
ages
Hi in the last issue J reviewed two new releases from the
Dieyfis Line, « French company headed by Francis Dreyfus,
asbeing authorized by the Bill Evans Estate. They indeed are,
but, by talking to Joc LaBarbera recently, [learned that the
Dicyfs Line released those CDs without the knowledge of,
and without paying royalties to Joe LaBarbera ot Mare
Johnson. [hope this was just an oversigh:. Bvans often stated
the importance of his sidemen. The word “sidemen” doesn't
do justice to the role ofthe bassist and drummer inthe Bill
Evans" Trios, especially the last one. They were all equal
partners in the music-making with Evans as the shaping
force. To say anything less shows a total ignorance of what
thei roles in the tris were all about. Marc and Joe deserve

“Sugar Plum” TranscriptionLetter from Evans, Spring 1999
lished in Paris by pianist Bemard Maury needs clarification.
LEE tas since leamed that Mr. Maury is trying to establish a
‘music schoo! ia Paris with s Bill Evans wing, 2 Duke Ellington
‘wing, and several parts of the building dedicated to study of
‘other influential jazz musicians. See his letter in the Levers
section.
1 Thetranscription feature in this issue consists of two tunes
thar Evans performed regularly. “Sugar Plum” has a rich
history. The tune is listed es being writen by John Court and.
Bill Bans. John Court was Warren Bembardi’s manager.
‘Court listened to Evans a great deal and liked particular solo
‘Phrase that Evans had played. Court contacted Evans, through
Bemhanit, and asked permission to use the phrase, add lyries
(0 It, and make a new tune from it. Evans agreed aad singer
Richie Havens recorded it. Evans played the tune as an 8 bar
phrase, modulating up a fourth every cight bars, oing through
all twelve keys. In the Jazz At the Maintenance Shop videos
Evans referred to “Sugar Plum” as “a tune by Bobbie Geaty.”
I don’t mow if Evans was referring to Gentry singing the tine
orif this was just another example of Evans" tongue-in-cheek
‘humor. The tune is a great one and, to my knowledge, bas not
been published before.
“Also included in this isswe are the chord changes that Evans.
‘sed when playing “Come Rain or Come Shine.” These, ant
the accompanying article were contaibuted by Warren Bem:

Readers may bave noticed that the editor's review of Live It
Europe, Vol. Ifrom Qualiton Records on the EPM late! was
not the first to appear in LFE. Ken Dryden reviewed that CD
in the Sepeember|Ootober 1900 issue. No harm done. LFE
often prints maltiple reviews.
Dryden didn't like Ted Gioia's book West Coast Jazz 18
much as Jack Beck did so he has offered amore critical review
fn this issue. Dryden takes Gioia to tak for his ueatinent of
Dave Brubeck. I'm not a pasticlarly fervent Brubeck fan bat
it's itaresting reading,

‘Concerzing myself, I was contacted to create the jazz

tuthorization to name it the Bill Evans Music Academy to pty
tribute to Bill's memory.

collaboration), nevertheless the realization of the global pro-

Only they can provide an appropriate building downtown for

For these reasons, I don’t think the E.C.J will be opera
