Layout – The layout of the double page spread is quite complex.
In this issue of Kerrang’s Cover Lines – There are not so many cover lines on these pages as they contain more
magazine, they layer up each feature on the page to make it look fuller. This is effective
because it makes it more interesting for the reader as they have more to look at rather
than just a main image and the text of the article. The main title spreads over the two
pages which shows that they have experimented more with layout so that it is not in a
basic linear format. The main image is also interesting because it takes up the majority of
the page so the reader of the magazine will instantly know what the article is about. I
also like how they have lined up smaller images at the bottom of the page in a thumbnail
effect to make it look more professional. It also refers to the article itself.
Masthead/Headings – The main heading is
probably the most eye catching feature of this
double page spread other than the main
image. It works well because the text is
slanted so it creates an interesting effect. The
red and white font works well to emphasise
different words. ‘The best MCR’ appeals to the
reader as it informs them what the article will
be about as well as highlighting how
successful they are as a group. The size of the
heading is very large, and by having capital,
bold letters, it helps stand out from the dark
background. The quote is also appealing as it
is direct from them and explains how they are
trying their best as a band.
Text – There is quite a lot of text in the article but Kerrang just format it as a smaller
size so that they can fit more detailed information in. By having more detailed
information, the reader will be encouraged more to read it and will find out crucial
information that they may not have known before. The text is laid out in a
professional way so that it is clear and understandable. The text is also centralised in
the page and moulded between the main title and images so readers will notice it
instantly. The white font also works well as it stands out from the solid black
background.

before the readers start to read the main structure of the text. The ‘world exclusive’
and ‘my chemical romance invites Kerrang to their recording studio’ appeals to the
reader as it makes them want to read the article even more because they know it’s
one of the main highlights of the magazine. The advertisements and interviews
located on the right hand side of the double page spread gives the reader detailed
information about things that they may want to find out from the article.
Colour Palette – Kerrang uses a very basic
colour palette on this double page spread.
They stick to using three colours red, black
and white and this continues the theme of
their type of music, rock. This gothic effect
works well and it shows consistency
because it is music related. The black and
white is also used a lot in their music videos
so their fans will immediately know who
the band is by using these two colours. The
monotone effect works well because it
highlights the red text and makes the
images look vintage.
Images/Main image – I think the images on this double page spread are the
most appealing features for the reader. When they see the images of MCR, it
may encourage them to read the article. The main image is music related and
the microphone works well to express the ‘rock and roll’ theme. I also think
that the smaller images of the band works well as they give the reader
something visual to look at rather than columns of text. The main image is
one photograph that is used as the background image. This is effective as the
other features of the double page spread are layered on top of it.
