and detergents. The range of biolgical species used in bioassay was diverse. We have used a broad
spectrum of freshwater and marine species, ranging from bacteria to higher invertebrates. The typical
and representative species included: 1. Autotrophs, e.g., the cyanobacteria Synechococcus, diatoms
Thalassiosira pseudonana (Hustedt) Hasle et Heimdal, green algae Scenedesmus quadricauda (Turp.)
Bréb, vascular plants Pistia stratiotes L., Elodea canadensis Michx., Sinapis alba L., Fagopyrum
esculentum Moench, Oryza sativa L., Lepidium sativum L., Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz, and Triticum
aestivum L. 2. Heterotrophs, e.g., the bacteria Hyphomonas, gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis, freshwater
bivalves Unio tumidus, marine bivalves Mytilus edulis, M. galloprovincialis, and annelid Hirudo
medicinalis. A new method for quantitative data analysis and the juxtaposition of the results of
assessing biological activities has been developed (Ostroumov, 1990 a, 1991 a,b). New variants of
methods for characterizing filtration rates by benthic invertebrates were also proposed and successfully
used. The main substances, the biological effects of which were analysed, included representatives of all
main classes of synthetic surfactants: 1. Anionic surfactants: sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), and
sulfonol; 2. Non-ionic surfactant: a representative of alkylphenols, Triton X100 (TX100, TX); 3. Cationic
surfactants: representatives of quarternary ammonium compounds, e.g., dodecyltrimethylammonium
bromide, and tetradecyltrymethylammonium bromide (TDTMA). 4. High-molecular weight surfactants:
e.g., SHMA. In addition, a number of industrial detergents that contain surfactants as part of the mixture
were studied. Those included, e.g., Tide, Losk, Kristall, Bio-S. Also, some products were investigated
which were being used as body-care products. To make comparisons, we also studied the bioeffects of
pesticides, e.g., DNOC and lontrel. Detergents that were studied: Kristall (Ostroumov, 1991; Ostroumov,
Wasternak, 1991; Ostroumov et al., 1998), Bio-S (Wasternak, Ostroumov, 1990), Tide, Losk, Lotos,
Kashtan, Verbena, Vilva; Tide-Lemon, Losk-Universal, Lotos-Extra; and a body-care mixture similar to a
shampoo: Avon Herbal Care. Some of the biotests (bioassays) used fish (Cyprinus carpio). Key words:

ABSTRACT: Synthetic surfactants are among aquatic pollutants that pollute both freshwater and marine
ecosystems. Effects of three surfactants on the water filtration rates by bivalve mollusks, marine mussels
(Mytilus, Atlantic Ocean) were studied. The xenobiotics tested represented anionic, cationic and non-
ionic surfactants. The surfactants that were tested were the following ones: (1)
tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide, a representative of a class of cationic surfactants; (2) sodium
dodecyl sulphate, a representative of anionic alkyl sulfates; and (3) Triton X-100, a representative of
non-ionic hydroxyethylated alkyl phenols. All three surfactants inhibited the clearance rates. The
surfactants decreased the water filtration rate by the bivalves (mussels Mytilus). The significance of the
results for water quality and the ecology of marine ecosystems is discussed. The research was done at

Ostroumov, 2009, published in Doklady Akademii Nauk, 2009, Vol. 425, No. 2, pp. 271–272]. The goal of
this study was to test whether SDS has an inhibitory effect on the ability of the planktonic filter-feeder
Daphnia magna to remove phytoplankton from water during their filtration activity. Daphnia were kept
under laboratory conditions in vessels and fed with phytoplankton: green algae Scenedesmus
quadricauda (Turp.) Breb.). After filtration for 6–24 h in the presence of SDS at concentrations 5 and 10
mg/l, the abundance of S. quadricauda cells in water was higher than in the control. At the lower SDS
concentrations (0.1, 0.5, and 1 mg/l), differences in the abundance of algal cells relative to the control
were observed after 3 h of incubation and disappeared after 6–24 h of incubation. The calculation of the
mean rate of algae removal by daphnia showed that this parameter decreased within the first 3 h after
the beginning of incubation in the presence of SDS. Thus, the results of our experiments demonstrated
that SDS decreases the rate of water filtration by the planktonic crustaceans D.

filtering biomachinery: 6 fundamental principles. Table 10. The level-block approach to the analysis of
ecological hazards of anthropogenic effects on the biota (the new conceptualization proposed by the
author). Some fundamental principles that characterize the pivotal roles of the biodiversity of filter-
feeders in ecosystems. Among those roles are: (1) the role of ecological repair of water quality, (2) the
role of contributing to reliability and stability of the functioning of the ecosystem, (3) the role of
contributing to creation of habitat heterogeneity, (4) the role of contributing to acceleration of
migration of chemical elements. It is an important feature of the biomachinery of filter-feeders that it
removes from water various particles of a very broad range of sizes. Another important principle is that
the amount of the organic matter filtered out of water is larger than the amount assimilated so that a
significant part of the removed material serves no useful function to the organism of the filter-feeder,
but serves a beneficial function to some other species and to the ecosystem as a whole. The new

experiments by the author additionally demonstrated a vulnerability of the filtration activity of filter
feeders (e.g. bivalves and rotifers) to some xenobiotics (tetradecyltrymethylammonium bromide, heavy
metals and some others). The inhibition of the filtration activity of filter-feeders may lead to the
situation previously described as that of an ecological … of the second type.

of effect of potentially hazardous substances: uncouplers of pelagial–benthal coupling. - Doklady
Biological Sciences. 2002 (March). Vol. 383 (1-6): 127-130. Bibliogr.15. ISSN 0012-4966. Discovery of a
new type of negative impact of pollutants on the biosphere, as a result of inhibition of water filtration by
filter-feeders / suspension feeders. The water filtration and associated removal of suspended matter
from water is part of migration of matter. As V.I. Vernadsky stressed, organisms are mediators of
“biogenic migration of atoms in the biosphere”. This migration is partly implemented in the framework
of pelagial–benthal coupling via the activity of filter-feeders, which remove the organic suspended
matter from water and excrete pellets. The tables contains the following data: the average percentage
of assimilated (16-90%) and non-assimilated (10-84%) food matter for 15 large taxa of invertebrates
(Table 1); potassium bichromate inhibited water filtration by mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis (Table 2);
surfactants, detergents, pesticides inhibited filtration by filter-feeders, marine and freshwater bivalves
and rotifers (Table 3). A prediction was made: "Further research and experimental studies are expected
to provide new evidence that sublethal concentrations of chemical pollutants induce a significant
decrease in the filtration capacity of freshwater and marine filter feeders" (p.129). "The uncoupling
process considered above is an anthropogenic violation of two basic laws (empirical rules or
biogeochemical principles) of the biosphere functioning: (1) biogenic migration of atoms of chemical
elements in the biosphere always tends toward its maximum expression; (2) on the geological time
scale, the evolution of species gives rise to the forms of life that are stable in the biosphere, and is so
directed that the biogenic migration of atoms in the biosphere increases" (p.129).];

Distributed by Springer, orderdept@springer-sbm.com. As a result of the author’s studies of filter-
feeders (DAN, 1998, Vol. 362, P. 574-576; DAN, 2001, Vol. 378, P. 283-285), it is clear that the filtering
activity of populations of filter-feeders in natural habitats might be significantly reduced if the
concentrations of some pollutants reach certain levels. The role of filter-feeders as factors of water
purification in ecosystems is so important that their inhibition is a danger for the entire ecosystem. The
author emphasizes that not only the biodiversity of filter-feeders but also their level of functional
(filtration) activity is to be protected. In order to do so, the author suggested establishing a new type of
protected areas whose main purpose is to protect functionally active populations of filter-feeders,

including bivalves and other organisms. Those protected areas could be named hydrobiological (some
variants: biofiltering, or malacological) reserves (some variants: refuges, sanctuaries, etc.). The author
formulated 5 principles of nature conservation requirements in malacological and hydrobiological
reserves (Tabl. 3). Among them is principle 2, "conservation of filtration activity of organisms and
populations". The paper contains data on how 5 detergents (1-50 mg/L) inhibited the filtration activity
of Unio tumidus, Mytilus galloprovincialis, Crassostrea gigas (Tabl. 2); on effects on the efficiency of
elimination (EEE) of suspended matter from water were measured (Tabl. 2); on the number of days (0.3
– 10) needed to filter the volume of aquatic (freshwater and marine) ecosystem by the local bivalves (a
review of data from literature) (Tabl. 1). "I suggest that the existing system of protected terrestrial and

Inhibitory.analysis.fulltext Inhibitory analysis of regulatory interactions in trophic webs.- Doklady
Biological Sciences, 2001, Vol. 377, p. 139–141. (Translated from Doklady Akademii Nauk, 2000, Vol.
375, No. 6, p. 847–849). Abstract: In the paper, the author proposed a new approach to analyze the key
ecological issue, the interactions between organisms in ecosystems. The new methodology proposed is
inhibitory analysis. The author applied this approach to analyze trophic chains: the top–down control of
plankton by benthic filter-feeders. This control, as the author’s experiments have shown, might be
removed by chemical inhibitors (the latter may enter the ecosystem as pollutants). As an example, the
author gives the results of his experiments on how surfactants [tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide
(TDTMA)] and synthetic detergents inhibited the control of plankton (Monochrystis lutheri) by mussels
Mytilus galloprovincialis. The method was successfully applied to innovatively analyze the factors that
are among reasons of eutrophication. Among new facts: the cationic surfactant TDTMA 1 mg/L inhibited
the filtration rate of juveniles of marine bivalves Mytilus galloprovincialis, and the removal of cells of the
algae Monochrysis lutheri from water (50 min, 26˚C)]. DOI 10.1023/A:1019218026198;

perform such functions as flood control, pollution filtration, nutrient recycling, sediment accretion,
groundwater recharge and water supply, erosion control, and plant and wildlife preservation. A large
concentration of wetlands is located in Eastern Europe. A significant amount of Eastern European
wetlands has been converted to agricultural use in the past, and remaining wetlands are subject to
agricultural drainage. Drained wetlands are used as prime agriculture lands for a variety of food crops.

stretches of the Pinios River, Central Greece Mediterranean Marine Science. Volume 8/2, 2007, 19-32.
Abstract: The Pinios River basin in Thessaly, Greece, is intensively farmed and heavily polluted with
poorly treated domestic and industrial waste. The river was divided into 35 homogenous stretches. We
investigated the self-purification capacity along the different stretches of the Pinios based on the
responses of the benthic macroinvertebrate community to municipal, industrial and agricultural
pollution in the basin. Water quality was assessed by the performance of six diversity and biotic indices
and scores for assessing water quality. Self-purification found by the downstream amelioration of water
quality was evident at five stretches. These stretches should be safeguarded and priority should be given
to restoration projects along the most water-quality-degraded stretches that lack the capacity for self-
purification.

Chatzinikolaou.2010.Desalination Chatzinikolaou Y., Ioannou A., Lazaridou M. Intra-basin spatial
approach on pollution load estimation in a large Mediterranean river . – Desalination. 2010 (1 January)
Volume 250, Issue 1, Pages 118-129.ABSTRACT: In order to find the segments of Pinios River which lack
the retention capacity of the BOD and nutrient input, the difference of the estimated input and output
pollution loads was compared at upstream and downstream clustered areas of a total of 73 segments.
Catchment areas ranged from 1 to 11,300 km2. Emissions were always higher than the actual transport,
therefore retention was assumed to take place. Specific runoff, percentage of the surface water area
and the calculated input of pollution loads (BOD, P, N) varied between the different Pinios River basin
catchment areas. The transport to the emission load ratio was different between large and small
catchments. The rate of retention among consecutive segments revealed that four lowland segments
lacked in their relative retention capacity

maintain the water quality, it is necessary to protect the functionally active biodiversity of water
ecosystems. In other words, protection of the functionally active biodiversity of aquatic organisms in a
water body is a method (and an indispensable one) of maintenance of water quality in this ecosystem.
Also, the author reports new experimental data on how detergents inhibited filtration activity of marine
bivalves, mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis, and oysters Crassostrea gigas.

Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology. 2010. doi:10.1016/j.jembe.2010.10.004;Abstract: A
previously unknown association between a luminous Vibrio sp., taxonomically related to the species
Vibrio harveyi and a common member of the shallow/mid water communities of the Mediterranean
Sea, the hydrozoan Clytia linearis is described. All the specimens of C. linearis observed under blue light
excitation showed both a natural luminescence appearing as a series of fine dots due to clytin, and a
clear fluorescence on the external side of the perisarc around the colonies due to the presence of
luminous bacteria. Luminous bacteria were isolated from the surface of C. linearis, their phenotypic
characterization as isolates was performed by several morphological, biochemical, and cultural tests,
completed with 16S rDNA sequence analysis. All the isolates were referred to a Vibrio sp. taxonomically
related to V. harveyi. The association of the V. harveyi-related species with C. linearis, as already
suggested for another hydroid, Aglaophenia octodonta, could be explained with the activity of these
bacteria of feeding on the chitinous structures present in these hydroids. Moreover, the adhesion of the
luminous bacterium (here referred to as Vibrio sp. CL1) on C. linearis may contribute to the survival of
this Vibrio species in the marine environment providing a suitable growth habitat.

Abstract.—Earlier, the author published two books and some papers, in which he described conceptual
foundations of new scientific disciplines—biochemical ecology and biochemical hydrobiology. These
trends in research include studies of the role of chemical substances in interorganismal interactions, in
communication and regulation of supraorganismal systems. Another part of biochemical ecology
concerns studies of the destiny and transformation of external chemical substances when they interact
with the organisms. Both natural and man-made compounds are interesting for biochemical ecology.
The basic concepts of biochemical ecology include ecological chemomediators and ecological
chemoregulators that have already been included in the body of modern conceptions and are used in
modern ecological literature. Application of biochemical ecology to aquatic ecosystems creates the basis
for development of biochemical hydrobiology. DOI: 10.1134/S1995425508020100. This paper is both a
concise summary and continuation of the book: Ostroumov S.A. Introduction to Biochemical Ecology
(Moscow, Moscow University Press).

( макрофиты) Ceratophyllum demersum (роголистник).

Nauk. 2009, vol. 428, No. 2, p. 282–285. Presented by Academician G.V. Dobrovol’skii. Using the method
of inversion voltamperometry, the concentrations of the heavy metals Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb were measured in
the water of the experimental microcosms. Aquatic macrophytes Ceratophyllum demersum were
incubated in some of the microcosms. The measured concentrations of all four metals decreased in the
microcosms with macrophytes much faster than in the control microcosms without any macrophytes.

Study of biogenic migration of the chemical elements is an important line of the biosphere research [1–
8]. Biogenic migration of the elements in aquatic ecosystems, both freshwater and saltwater ones, is
important for water self purification and water quality formation [9–11]. Data on element accumulation
and binding by aquatic organisms, including macrophytes, are necessary for analyzing the organisms’
important role in biogenic migration of the elements in aquatic ecosystems. The concentrations of some
elements were deter mined earlier in different biogenic samples, including aquatic organisms
(hydrobionts) and biogenic detrital substances [9, 10]. However, these data were based on a limited set
of organisms and elements. There are no published data on either gold (Au) content in Ceratophyllum
demer sum L. or interaction between Au nanoparticles and aquatic macrophytes. The goal of this work

was to study the immobilization of Au nanoparticles added to the water medium of microcosms in the
presence of macrophyte C. demersum L. This study was the first to determine the concentration of Au
and some other elements in C. demersum phytomass after incubation in microcosms containing Au
nanosize particles (NSPs). Results of the experiments: (1) the first data have been obtained that
demonstrate that a significant amount of Au NSPs may bind to live phytomass of an aquatic plant, C.
demersum. As a result of binding and/or immobilization, the content of Au was greater then the
background level by a factor of 430.3; (2) modification of NSPs with a protein (immunoglobulin) had no
effect on the NSP immobilization by macrophytes. The results contribute to understanding the role of
these organisms in biogenic migration of elements. These data give us the possibility to estimate the
participation of phytomass of the studied macrophyte species in element concentration (as exemplified
by Au) in an aquatic system. REFERENCES: 1. Vernadsky, V.I., Khimicheskoe stroenie biosfery Zemli i ee

10.1007/s11184-005-0095-x; S. A. Ostroumov. [http://www.scribd.com/doc/45572968] (Faculty of
Biology, Moscow State University, Vorob’evy gory, Moscow, 119991 Russia) Abstract: The study of water
self-purification processes (Skurlatov, 1988; Ostroumov, 2000a) is essential for approaching
fundamental ecological problems (Alimov, 2000; Ostroumov et al., 2003) and for resolving some applied
issues related to the sustainable use of aquatic and biological resources. The purpose of this paper is to
give a systematic account of the concepts concerning the multiple functions of the biota in the self-
purification of water bodies and watercourses, without attempting to review the numerous publications
in this field. In this paper, a paradigm shift was made and some new principles of the theory of the
ecological mechanism of water self-purification based on multiple functions of the biota in freshwater
and marine ecosystems were formulated. In developing this theory, the results of the author’s
experiments with aquatic organisms (filter-feeders) have been used. As a result, the author discovered
that the natural ecological mechanism which maintains water quality (water self-purification
mechanism) is vulnerable to the impact of some pollutants as exemplified by synthetic detergents and
surfactants. Conclusions drawn on the basis of the theory have practical significance for biodiversity
conservation and for the sustainable use of the biological resources of aquatic ecosystems. 1067-

ecosystems and participate in the purification of water, which contributes to the sustainability of water
quality. This is especially important in conditions of pollution of water bodies and water streams.
Surfactants constitute an important class of pollutants. Therefore, further investigation and clarification
of the facts concerning the interaction of plants and various surfactants are necessary. The present
paper presents the results of investigations of the effect of various concentrations of aqueous solutions
of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) on the viability of the aquatic macrophytes, the
pondweed Potamogeton crispus L. When the effects of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate
on the aquatic macrophytes Potamogeton crispus L. were studied, it was found that the concentrations
of 83–133 mg/l caused fragmentation of the stems of plants. The tolerance of the plants to the negative
effects of the surfactant was higher in the spring (April) than in the autumn (September).

large quantities of nanomaterials may lead to unintended contamination of terrestrial and aquatic
ecosystems1. The unique physical, chemical and electronic properties of nanomaterials allow new
modes of interaction with environmental systems that can have unexpected impacts2, 3. Here, we show
that gold nanorods can readily pass from the water column to the marine food web in three laboratory-
constructed estuarine mesocosms containing sea water, sediment, sea grass, microbes, biofilms, snails,
clams, shrimp and fish. A single dose of gold nanorods (65 nm length 15 nm diameter) was added to
each mesocosm and their distribution in the aqueous and sediment phases monitored over 12 days.
Nanorods partitioned between biofilms, sediments, plants, animals and sea water with a recovery of
84.4%. Clams and biofilms accumulated the most nanoparticles on a per mass basis, suggesting that gold
nanorods can readily pass from the water column to the marine food web.

This study investigated the effects of competition between binding substrates (organic matter and iron
oxide) and between metals (cadmium and copper), on the partitioning of sedimentary copper and its
subsequent bioavailability to an aquatic plant. Organic matter and a synthesized iron oxide, ferrihydrite,
were added singly and in combination to a series of sand sediments, which were then dosed with
environmentally realistic concentrations of cadmium and copper and planted with rice, O0'za sativa.
Organic matter controlled copper partitioning and bioavailability, whereas the synthetic ferrihydrite
bound negligible amounts of either metal, even in the absence of organic matter. As organic matter
concentrations increased, operationally-defined leachable copper decreased, organic-associated copper
increased and the survival of rice plants improved in an approximately linear fashion. At a nominal
starting copper concentration of 5.8 F~g g dry wt -I , plant survival after four weeks averaged 0-8% in
sediments without organic matter, 25% in a sediment containing 0.18% organic matter and 58% in a
sediment containing 0.36% organic matter. These results suggest that organic-associated forms of
copper are unavailable to plants, and that the operational definition of 'leachable' copper (extracted
with dilute ammonium acetate) adequately represents the species of copper that is (are) available to
plants. Our study using a well-characterized artificial sediment supports the copper fractionation
patterns and correlations between copper partitioning and bioavailability reported from the
heterogeneous, poorly characterized sediments of natural lake and river sediments.

summarizes the 20-year research done by the author and over 90 author's research publications in
many Russian and international editions as well as hundreds of publications of other scientists. The book
contains new detailed information on the results of the author’s studies of the biological effects of
synthetic surfactants and detergents on autotrophic and heterotrophic, prokaryotic and eukaryotic
organisms. The chemicals included anionic, non-ionic and cationic surfactants, as well as several types of
detergents. The freshwater and marine organisms studied and used for bioassay included bacteria and
cyanobacteria, algae, flagellates, seedlings of higher plants (the plant species used were: Fagopyrum
esculentum, Sinapis alba, Lepidium sativum, Oryza sativa, and others), and invertebrates (mollusks
Mytilus, Crassostrea, Unio, annelids Hirudo medicinalis). New methods for bioassay and biotesting of
chemicals are described and applied in the book. The results are discussed and analyzed in connection
with new priorities in assessing the ecological hazards of chemical pollution and xenobiotics on the
biosphere and hydrosphere, studying water purification in aquatic ecosystems, and setting new
priorities in the area of environmental protection. The book is of interest to scientists who conduct
research in the relevant areas of ecology, limnology, oceanography, biotechnology, environmental
sciences, water sciences, geosciences, the science of the biosphere and global change, ecotoxicology, as
well as to university professors, graduate students and educators. The book is also of interest to those
who are involved in environmental management and assessment, environmental law and regulation.
The book is also of interest to the companies and industries that make dispersants to clean oil spills,

Hydrobiologia, 2005, 542: 275-286. http://www.scribd.com/doc/44105992; Some aspects of water
filtering activity of filter-feeders S.A.Ostroumov Laboratory of Physico-Chemistry of Biomembranes,
Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University, Moscow 119991, Russia Key words: filter-feeders, water
purification, bivalves, pollution, filtering activity Abbreviations: AFDW - ash-free dry weight; LD - liquid
detergent; SD - synthetic detergent (laundry detergent in the form of powder); SDS - sodium dodecyl
sulphate; TDTMA -tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide; Abstract On the basis of the previous
publications, our new data and the existing scientific literature, we have formulated some fundamental
principles that characterize the pivotal roles of the biodiversity of filter-feeders in ecosystems. Among
those roles are: (1) the role of ecological repair of water quality, (2) the role of contributing to reliability
and stability of the functioning of the ecosystem, (3) the role of contributing to creation of habitat
heterogeneity, (4) the role of contributing to acceleration of migration of chemical elements. It is an
important feature of the biomachinery of filter-feeders that it removes from water various particles of a

very broad range of sizes. Another important principle is that the amount of the organic matter filtered
out of water is larger than the amount assimilated so that a significant part of the removed material
serves no useful function to the organism of the filter-feeder, but serves a beneficial function to some
other species and to the ecosystem as a whole. The new experiments by the author additionally
demonstrated a vulnerability of the filtration activity of filter feeders (e.g. bivalves and rotifers) to some
xenobiotics (tetradecyltrymethylammonium bromide, heavy metals and some others). Some of new

and G.V. Nevárez-Moorillón. Treatment for small polluted rivers: Design and performance of an
experimental structure. Water SA, 2005, Vol. 31, No. 1, p. 101 - 106.Abstract In view of the economic
reality of developing countries, it will not be possible to build all the necessary wastewater treatment
plants (WWTP) needed to control the pollution of their rivers in the next 20 years. Therefore, low-cost
alternative technologies must be developed to restore the water quality of polluted rivers. It is well-
known that the self-purification cycle in nature uses several biotic and abiotic processes to restore
polluted water to its former pristine quality. This cycle has been surpassed in many rivers due to
continuous discharges of wastewater into them. A low-cost structure that will enhance the water quality
in small polluted rivers is proposed and can be constructed in situ, based on three conditions: Disruption
of plug flow, flow velocity and support material for bacterial growth. The design of the experimental
stage of this structure can control slope, water flow, length, support material and the number of locks.
Two 175m-long experimental models were constructed; both models were filled with crushed, washed
and screened 10 to 12 mm diameter river stone. A mixture of primary and secondary effluents from a
WWTP was used to test the models, with a chemical oxygen demand of COD ≈50 and 100 mg•l-1
respectively. For a uniform 0.5% slope, the maximum flows achieved were 27 and 30 l•min-1 with and
without locks. The system worked efficiently breaking the plug flow, mixing the water flow and allowing
stable aerobic microbial communities of 5.58 and 8.86 log UFC•g-1, and COD reductions ranging from
90.27 to 555.2 mg•min-1 depending on the pollutant concentration. Keywords: freshwater
contaminants, self-purification, alternative technology, microbial communities; water, microbial,
