New Brunswick is one of Canada’s three Maritime provinces, and is the only constitutionally bilingual province
( French and English ) in the federation. The provincial capital is Fredericton. The population of New Bruns-
wick is almost 750,000; a majority are English–speaking, but there is also a large Francophone minority
( 32% ), chiefly of Acadian origin.

As of fall 2009, the Province of New Brunswick prohibited the sale and use of more than 240 over–the–
counter lawn care pest control products, specifically 2,4–D, despite the fact that these products are FEDERALLY
LEGAL and SCIENTIFICALLY SAFE. This prohibition was imposed on the pretext of improving the environment
and quality of life.

Despite prohibition, it is still permitted to spot–treat weeds using pre–mixed, over–the–counter products.
Additionally, Professional Lawn Care Companies are permitted to use pest control products if they have proper
training in Integrated Pest Management, and do not perform pest control applications on more than fifty per
cent of a lawn in one season. Evidently, NOT A SINGLE Government Official who designed or supported this ri-
diculous prohibition has ANY recognized expertise, training or background in matters concerning pest control
products or turf management !

Pest control products are still allowed on parks, sports fields, school yards and hospital grounds. As usual,
the Golf Industry has been provided with an EXCEPTION to the prohibition. Forestry and agriculture are not af-
fected at all.

There are three principal Environmental–Terror–Organizations operating in New Brunswick : Canadian Asso-
ciation of Physicians for the Environment ( C.A.P.E. ), Canadian Cancer Society, and New Brunswick Lung As-
sociation.

On February 18th, 2009, Gideon Forman, enviro–maniac–leader and fund–raiser for C.A.P.E., said golf courses
do not qualify as an « essential » sector for herbicides or pesticides. While acknowledging the economic im-
portance of golf courses, he said that it possible to maintain courses through so–called alternative non–toxic
methods. « I think we recognize that golf courses have some special challenges, so they may need some ex-
tra time perhaps, but we would like to see them included in the ban » he said. This position is also supported
by other Environmental–Terror–Organizations, like the Contemptible and Radical Canadian Cancer Society.

Environmental–Terrorism is being stopped elsewhere in Canada. In January 2010, the Green Space Industry
outlined the list of charges against the Government of Ontario and Enviro–Maniac–Government–Officials
working in the Ministry of the Environment. Additionally, individual Enviro–Maniac–Members of known Envi-
ronmental–Terror–Organizations are also facing charges of FRAUD under the Criminal Code.

Additionally, Dow AgroSciences has gone ahead with a threatened suit against the federal government under
the North American Free Trade Agreement ( N.A.F.T.A. ), seeking a repeal of Quebec’s prohibition of FEDER-
ALLY LEGAL, SCIENTIFICALLY SAFE, TOTALLY IRREPLACEABLE, and ABSOLUTELY INDISPENSABLE conventional pest con-
trol products containing 2,4–D, and demanding at least TWO MILLION DOLLARS IN DAMAGES .

This is the season when many property owners resume the dande-
lion wars in pursuit of pristine lawns. But the rules in New Bruns-
wick have just changed. It’s no longer OK to douse the grass with
2,4–D–based pesticides.

Environment Minister [ and Enviro–Maniac ] Rick Miles recently is-

sued a seasonal reminder that our province is the first in Atlantic
Canada and the third in the entire nation « to adopt a comprehen-
sive product ban on lawn care pesticides ». [ Big Deal ! ] Ontario
and Quebec already have similar bans.

It’s a response to growing concerns by [ Environ mental–Terror–

Organization, including ] Canadian Cancer Societ y that chemicals
used in cosmetic spraying of lawns [ allegedly ] pose a serious poten-
tial health risk. The new rules outlaw the sale and use of more
than 240 over–the–counter lawn care pesticides.

It sounds good, but is it good enough ? [ Not for Enviro–Maniacs ! ]

province has committed to reviewing its pes-
ticide legislation, regulations and policy be-
fore the end of this year.

Ontario, [ Enviro–Maniac ] Snider adds, has adopted formal legisla-

tion not only restricted to 2,4–D products, but covering 87 other
chemical ingredients as well. In New Brunswick, there are EXCEP-
TIONS for golf courses, parks ― and curiously ― schoolyards and
hospital grounds.
[ Enviro–Maniac ] Snider points out that GOLF COURSES are the only
exception in Ontario. FORESTRY and AGRICULTURE operations are
also NOT covered by the New Brunswick regulations.

The Canadian Cancer Society’s [ Enviro–Terror ] position, says

Snider, « is that the use of these pesticides for the cosmetic ap-
pearance of lawns is of no benefit to anyone and there’s growing
concern and evidence of its risk to health ». [ W rong ! ]

The government says there’s an ACCREDITATION PROGRAM for lawn

care companies permitting them a limited use of pesticides « if they
have proper training in integrated pest management ».

There’s also leeway for property owners to SPOT – TREAT WEEDS using
pre–mixed over–the–counter products.

For the last nine years, I’ve been a green–grass [ Enviro–Maniac ] ad-
vocate ― one of those people who believe that green lawns should
really be green projects ― without the use of chemicals which have
a potential for [ allegedly ] harming us and our environment.

I attribute my conversion from cosmetic use of chemicals to my

daughter, who lives in Ottawa, [ a haven for Enviro–Maniac activity ] .
She was the person who convinced me there was something [ alleg-
edly ] wrong about dousing our lawns with pesticides which could
be potentially harmful to the environment and to people, [ despite
the fact that they are federally legal and scientifically safe ] .

Grounds Maintenance Authority. Mr. Gathercole is now retired from Force Of Nature, although his name
continues to appear as the founder. Mr. Gathercole is personally credited for crafting the Golf Industry
