Dear Professor Swilling

STIAS VINEYARD

As Chair of the Stias Vineyard Committee, we would like you to communicate to the Committee that
Stellenbosch University once again re-affirms its commitment to the following:

• No chemical remedies will be applied to the Stias Vineyard while the Committee is engaged in its
deliberations about the future of the vineyard;

• This commitment has been communicated to the relevant line managers via the usual procedures;

• Stias Management has also been requested to instruct their garden service to refrain from applying any
chemical substances to the gardens surrounding the vineyard; and

• If for whatever reason there is an emergency arising from the fact that the vineyard has been afflicted in
a negative way, thus requiring the application of a chemical substance, a meeting of the Committee will
be called to consider the matter.

With kindest regards,

Prof M Karaan Prof A van Zyl
