Calibre of the nominated trees

It is very important that the reviewed schedule identifies only the most significant trees in the urban
area. The public needs to be confident that these trees are ‘significant’ in the context of the general
tree stock. This will ensure the integrity of the Schedule.

Nominations should be for Urban Areas only

Note: Because the changes to the Resource Management Act focus on trees in urban areas
nominations are only being sought for trees in the urban parts of the district. An urban area is defined
(as determined by the RMA for the purposes of tree protection) as one that includes an allotment no
greater than 4000m2 —

(a) that is connected to a reticulated water supply system and a reticulated sewerage
system; and
(b) on which is a building used for industrial or commercial purposes, or a dwelling house…”

Trees on Council reserves are unaffected by the changes to the new legislation and it is not intended
that these would be included on the schedule, because they are already protected. No nominations will
be accepted on such trees. It should be noted that the reserves network is extensive and the time
involved in collating the relevant data would exceed the tight timeframes of the current plan changes.
