Course No.: ARCH262-R9 (Architectural Design 4)

Plate No.: 1
Plate Title: A Proposed Barangay Complex
Plate Learning Objectives:
1. Distinguish human behavior and human interrelationship as viewed in Architectural Design
2. Acquire the ability to manipulate basic forms and shapes to achieve the basis of Architecture
and discipline in producing quality work and time management.

Background:
Barangay is the basic unit of the community. Originated from the Malay word Balangay which is
typically a large water vessel that would house multiple families and use them as transportation
between islands within the Philippine archipelago. The word has evolved to become an essential part
of the building blocks of society. The Philippine barangay is headed by a chairman or a captain with
several councilors who are elected through local elections and given a term of three years after
another election is held. The main purpose for these officials is to spearhead improvements and
developments of the barangay, maintain the health and welfare of the populace provide entertainment
and conduct the traditional rituals and holidays of the barangay. These barangay officials cannot do
all these alone, so they employ point persons to help them achieve these gargantuan goals and
responsibilities.
A parcel of land within the barangay vicinity has been identified as a barangay site wherein all the
offices and the needed amenities of the barangay are to be located. The complex usually houses the
barangay hall, multi-purpose, day-care center, health center and the “tanod” headquarters. These
buildings are just the basic amenities provided to the barangay, but some barangay could have more
buildings within the complex.

Problem:
The designers are tasked to design a whole new barangay complex of Barangay Punta Princesa to
meet their growing needs. A research paper about the barangay’s history, culture and tradition is
needed as a major consideration in designing the complex.

The Lot:

Line 8 to 9 is bounded by Tres de Abril Street 8.0 meters wide. And line 11 to 1 is facing a 3.0
meters wide access road.

Design Requirement:
CONCEPT. The concept should be organic to the barangay itself. It should showcase the
unique character of the barangay applying indigenous Filipino architecture adopting new technology
using native materials such as bamboo, nipa, rattan, etc. The residents of the barangay should be
able to identify with the concept and can fully understand and imbue the meaning of the concept. To
achieve this, a far-reaching and comprehensive study and research of the barangay should be done
by the researchers as to their history, culture, unique traditions, products and iconic personalities.
BUILDINGS (typical)
Barangay Hall
Multipurpose Building
Day-Care Center
Health Center
Tanod Headquarters

Note: It is up to designers to collate qualitative data with regards to the space requirements of
each building. The designers could also provide buildings not mentioned above as long as is it
supported by sufficient research data.

restrictions (PSO/ Percentage Site Occupancy computation, Parking spaces, proper
setbacks)

laws.
