Safe Forklift Driving

Forklifts are designed to perform specific functions under specified conditions with trained
personnel. When leaders do not enforce standards, human errors enter the forklift
operations and potential safety hazards occur. These problems are compounded when
inexperienced, unsupervised, untrained or partly trained personnel become operators for
forklifts.

Common causes of forklift accidents are overturning (usually fatal), workers being struck by
materials, workers being struck by the forklift, and workers falling from the forklift.
Forklift operation is not as simple as it looks. But with a little experience, it's not an
impossible skill to master. Unfortunately, those who operate forklifts day in and day out have
a tendency to take short cuts and to ignore basic safety rules. They develop the old “It can't
happen to me" attitude.

Only through training, practice on the equipment, following correct procedures and
standards, and leader’s involvement will prevent accidents, minimize damage and improve
forklift safety.

Objectives

At the end of the programme, participants should be able to:

 Understand what causes forklift accident
 Understand the Stability Triangle affecting the centre of gravity
 Conduct the pre-operational inspections using the checklift effectively
 Report defects to supervisors or maintenance
 Describe the safe refueling and charging procedures for disel, petrol , LPG and
battery
 Understand weight capacities, load centres and extended loads
 Understand better with different size loads and how high the load is lifted
 Maintaining safe operating speeds
 Follow safe operating conditions such on inclines, rough surfaces and wet surfaces
 Describe the proper operation of a forklift when negotiating a turn or corner
 Understand why they need to line up the forklift squarely when approaching and
engaging a load from racks
 Understand travelling position of forks when loaded or unloaded
 Not raise and lower loads while moving to prevent fall and tip over
 Carry out forklift parking safely

Duration: 2 days (9.00 am - 5.00 pm)

Methodology

 The course lecture will be conducted in Bahasa Malaysia

 A VCD on Safe Operation of forklift will be shown to instill participants on safe driving
 Practical exercise
 Theory and practical test

Who Should Attend

Any individual who plans to operate forklifts in all industries (general industry and
construction) in which forklifts are being used. Any full-time, part-time, seasonal or temporary
operator, regardless of prior experience, must be properly trained and evaluated every three
years.
