THE FIRST KNOWLEDGE OF THE ANIMAL KINGDOM

CLASSIFIED NOMENCLATURE FOR ZOOLOGY

We give this at two different times, first at the word reading level and again when children are
reading phrases. We use pictures of animals to introduce this material.

The first level is an exercise for language and biology together as the child associates the name
with the picture.

The second level exercises language, biology and geography as the child reads the descriptions
of the
animals, matches them with the pictures and labels, then locates where the animal is found in the
world.

DESCRIPTION OF MATERIALS:

1. Cards with pictures of the animals.

2. Reading labels with the names of the animals

3. Cards with stories about the animals

4. Cards or labels for classification games for 3rd presentation

a. Color coded – 7 colors for 7 different exercises (not shown)
b. Each exercise has a title card (Environment/Shelter), a question card (Where do they live?),
and category cards (air, land, water). Also: how the animals live, get food, move. (not shown)

EXERCISE: Draw the animal and write his description.

3rd PRESENTATION: CLASSIFICATION GAMES

1. T chooses a heading-question card, i.e. Where do they live? (not shown)

2. Lay out question and category cards, i.e. air, land, water. (not shown)

3. Pass out picture cards. C answer & place cards under headings. (not shown)
