• Pratham undertakes a survey in
each slum/basti it works in across
the country. Four key questions
are asked in the survey each year

8 week program targeted at children
who are unable to read simple texts
• An extension of the Learning to Read
class where out-of-school children
are enrolled in these classes as a
priority

• Objective is to ensure that all
children in the communities have
access to books that they can read
• Fun filled activities such as drawing
competitions, craft classes,
quizzes, debates are conducted as
part of the library

Program
• Pratham piloted the scholarship
preparation program in Mumbai in
2007
• Proportion of children coached by
Pratham who passed was 21%
higher than other municipal school
going children
• 250 schools in Mumbai invited

should pass the scholarship/

ASER
• Largest household survey
undertaken in India
• Annually measures the
enrollment as well as the
reading and arithmetic levels of
children (6-14 years)
• In 2008, ASER reached over
7,04,000 children in 16,198
villages in 564 rural districts

million children across 19 states

those not able to read alphabets
down to zero

simple sentences is up by almost 20%.

Angrezi – A to Z

conducted in the community

and Speaking 25% time Reading.
Tests are conducted to monitor
