What’s Up? Magazine is a publication for teens by teens who are students at the
Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

This publication was designed and compiled by The Library System of Lancaster
County’s What’s Up with the Library? Program. Library staff travel to the Lancaster
County Youth Intervention Center twice a month to encourage young residents to read,
write, and enjoy the free services the public library has to offer.

Can’t Get There From Here by Todd Strasser
(Young Adult Fiction)
She calls herself Maybe. Thrown out by her abusive mom, she strug-
gles to survive on the streets of New York with homeless teens who
become a family in the asphalt jungle. They try to care for one an-
other, but it doesn't help much. They beg and forage for food. Maybe
knows some of them work as prostitutes and deal drugs. One or two
do find loving homes, but most will die--from AIDS, violence, expo-
sure, suicide. Without sentimentality or exploitation, Maybe's disturbing first-
person narrative lets readers know exactly what it's like to live without shelter,
huddling in nests of rags, newspapers, and plastic bags.
The Rose That Grew From Concrete by Tupac
(NF/Poetry)
A collection of poetry written by the rapper between 1989 and 1991,
before he became famous. The poems are passionate, sometimes
angry, and often compelling. Selections are reproduced from the origi-
nals in Shakur's handwriting, personalized by distinctive spelling and
the use of ideographs (a drawing of an eye for I, etc.), and complete
with scratch outs and corrections.

I love to spend time with my girlfriend. I love her and she loves me. On most
days, she comes over and we watch movies in the candlelight while cuddling.
Who do you love?
Then on those special days, I take her to the movies and then go for a walk in the
park. I miss her so much. I just want to see her so bad that I can’t stop thinking
about her. I love her too much to let her go because I know she is the one that I
will always want to hold in my arms. I really miss her even though it’s been two
days since I talked to her. I just hope I get out of here soon to see my baby girl.
I miss the sound of my baby girl’s voice. I hope this time in here doesn’t affect
our relationship.

The one person I love in this world the most is my mom because she’s the one
who gave me life and not only that but she’s always been there for me on my ups
and downs, good or bad and special moments, no matter what. Unlike other par-
ents, when I need something from my mom she doesn’t always give it to me, but
when she has she gives it to me without a doubt. Sometimes she even sits down

and plays online with me or I show her a little about playing pool.

My love is my mom because she was the person that brought me in the world.
I love my mom because no matter what I do she still loves me and I love her.
I hope my mom comes to see me, and my brothers and sister. My mom has
always been a good mom. My mom is the best mom in the world. She cares for
me and my brothers the same way. She loves to keep us happy all the time and
she gives us anything we want and I know that someday I’m going to regret eve-
rything and I will have to apologize to my mom.

The only thing that I fell in love with was family. They’re always going to be there
for you, no matter what the situation is. The most important thing is that you
make sure you never forget them and always be there for them. Without family
life would truly suck, because there’s no such thing as friends in this world.
There is, but it’s very hard to find them. That’s why it’s better to stick with them.
My grandma is my everything. She is my friend, my sister, my mom, and my
grandmom. My love for her will never die!

What does Valentine’s Day mean to you?
Valentine’s Day
It means to spend the day with someone that makes you smile when you
talk about them. Someone you love and always want to be around. I just
started knowing what it meant when I fell in love. I’ve been in love for
the last six years. I really don’t know the history of Valentines. The first
time I celebrated Valentine’s was when I was fourteen. I always thought
it is a fake holiday made by flowers, candy, movies, and large companies
to make money. If you love somebody, everyday should be Valentine’s
Day. But I love my girl and I would take her out everyday if I could.

What Valentine’s Day means to me is to spend time with someone you
love and cherishing the moment that you have with them. Always be
faithful and buy them something or chill with them. My best Valen-
tine was when I was with my girlfriend and we were in the car driv-
ing, well I was driving, and we got lost out in this county I didn’t
know, but we found our way back because we worked together to find
the right way back to the city. Then we finally went to Cici’s Pizza to
eat.

Valentine’s Day is February 14. It’s a day you spend with the person you
love. That’s when you get her chocolates and take her out somewhere
nice. It’s the day of Cupid. My last Valentine, we went to the movies
then went to the mall then went out to eat. Then we went to my friend’s

Portraits interspersed with poetry draw readers into the lives of a
variety of African-American teens. In "Getting Even," a boy copes with
his grandfather's death and the desire to find who killed him. Jeffery,
16, gets thrown out of his Auntie's house with nowhere to go. Eric
goes against his dad's command to stay home with his siblings and

Give a Boy a Gun by Todd Strasser (YA Fiction)
High school sophomores Gary Searle and Brendan Lawlor have had
enough. Day in and day out, for more than two years, they have been
harassed, beaten up, and cursed out by most of the jocks at Middle-
ton High--especially by football player Sam Flach. Armed with guns
they've stolen from a neighbor's collection, Gary and Brendan storm a
school dance, booby trap all the doors with homemade bombs, and
prepare to turn their high school caste system upside down with a violent
show of force.
Street Love by Walter Dean Myers (YA Fiction)
In short lines of free verse, teens in Harlem tell a story of anger, loss,
and love across social-class lines. Damien, 17, is a basketball cham-
pion and academic star, accepted into a top college. His parents want
him to date middle-class Roxanne, but he falls in love with gorgeous
Junice, 16, who is desperate to protect her little sister after their sin-
gle-parent mom is sentenced to 25 years for dealing drugs.

is when you have a certain relationship with somebody.  For exam‐
ple, it could be a guy as in a best friend or family relation‐
ship, or a girl as in a best friend, family, or girlfriend.  When 
you have love it means you don’t lie, backstab, or hurt the per‐
son you love.  But the good things are you respect, protect, pro‐
vide, and admire that person.  You stay true to that person, as 
in your girlfriend, and you have an open relationship with her.  
With a family member, you always have their back no matter what.

One day, a boy by the name of Izeak was walking around the city with
his friend Isaiah when they saw the ice cream truck stopped over on
Valentine’s Day Funnies

Tremont Street. There was a long line of people waiting so they de-
cided to go check it out and get some ice cream to see if they knew any
of the kids standing by the ice cream truck. When they got over there,
Isaiah knew everyone over there except the three girls that were sitting
on the porch eating their ice cream. So Isaiah asked Izeak did he know
them. He said no, that they had just moved on the block last week. So
Isaiah was looking at them and one in particular caught his eye. She
was beautiful with hazel eyes. So he began talking to her and since
that day on, he knew the meaning of love at first sight.

Friendship is...
Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center

Friendship is a relationship between two friends. I think a good friendship is when

you are comfortable with a person, comfortable enough to be able to talk to them
about whatever you want. I don’ t think there is such a thing as a bad friendship
because if someone treats you in a way you don ’ t want to be treated, or gets you
in trouble, then they aren ’ t your friends. Sometimes it’ s hard to have a good
friendship with someone if you don ’ t trust them. Same thing when you don’ t like
someone, it ’ s impossible for them to be your friend if you don ’ t like them. My
definition of a good friend is someone that you are comfortable around, someone
that will always be there for you, someone that will never diss you, someone that
you can trust, and someone that you can love. I also think that a good friend is
someone that will always be able to understand. For example, when you talk
about your feelings with someone, if they understand your feelings that makes
them a good friend.

What’s Up? Magazine is a publication for teens by teens who are students at the
Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

This publication was designed and compiled by The Library System of Lancaster
County’s What’s Up with the Library? Program. Library staff travel to the Lancaster
County Youth Intervention Center twice a month to encourage young residents to read,
write, and enjoy the free services the public library has to offer.

What’s Up with the Library?

The next issue of What’s Up? Magazine will be released on May 4, 2011.

Residents at the Youth Intervention Center are encouraged to submit their writing or
drawing for the next issue!

Be sure to fill out a sign-up form, located in the YIC library, and submit it with your
writing/art by April 20, 2011.

Your writing & drawings should be submitted in the box in the YIC library or to: Bryan
Hubbard, a member of the YIC staff, or a member of the What’s Up with the Library?
staff.
