o Examples of Motors Available

 The Electric Motor is the “HEART” of the
electric vehicle, converting electrical
energy into mechanical energy.
 Generally, electric motor can be divided
into 2 main types:

Electric Motor
AC motor DC motor
 To investigate the various types of
electric motor.
 And, to determine the suitable type of
electric motor for Electric Vehicles (EVs).
 Also, to determine the value of motor
parameters required for an efficient EV.
 Improve electric motor efficiency.
 Electric motors are more efficient

 Petrol Engine = 20% energy to the wheels

Electric Motor = 75% energy to the
wheels

 Electric motor delivers constant torque at

all speeds
 There are a lot of types of electric
motors, for instance:
DC Brushed DC Brushless
Motor Motor

AC Switched
Induction Reluctance
Motor Motor
Equivalent Circuit
Netgain Warp11 Series DC motor
Permanent
Electronic DC Brushless
Magnet Commutation Motor
DC Motor
Configuration:

a) Outrunner
b) Conventional
 High Reliability

 Almost maintenance free

 Low manufacturing cost

 Higher efficiency than brushed DC motor

 Long constant power range

 High starting torque

 Fault tolerance

 Suitable for single gear

 Low technological maturity

 Advantages of BLDC:
› Almost-free Maintenance and longer lifetime
(No Commutators and Brushes).
› Outrunner configuration can be used to
increase torque and power density.
› Can be operated at unity power factor
leading to higher efficiency.
› Simpler control drive is needed as compared
to ac induction motor.
› Maximum torque can acquired at all
speeds, even at lower speed range.
