Army Family Team Building Level III

Coaching and Mentoring

Coaching Scenario
Every year the Battalion Family Readiness Group holds an annual major social event. Jane,
a volunteer and FRG member of the battalion, has agreed to chair the event. Over the last
two years, Jane served as a volunteer during the annual event. This will be her first time
chairing something of this magnitude. Alice, the senior FRG advisor, has chaired this event
in the past. The Battalion Commander asked Alice if she would coach Jane during the event.
Jane is very enthusiastic about the project, so Alice knows she has a willing “coachee”.
From experience Alice knows they will need to divide the work among several committees
(food, children’s games, entertainment, gifts, prizes, publicity, commercial sponsorship,
command liaison and command achievement awards) as well as recruit 50 volunteers for
the actual event. What steps does Alice need to take to get Jane prepared to take on this
event?

#1 – Definition – How does Alice need to help Jane? What does Jane need to learn?

#2 – Analysis – What is Jane’s level of experience now? How much does Alice need to
help Jane so she can do her job?

#3 – Exploration – What can Alice do to help Jane with her preparations? What are
some of the things on Jane’s “to do list” that will help her organize the before,
during and after the event?

#4 – Action – How does Alice know if Jane understands what she needs to do? What does
Jane need to do to start performing her duties as the overall chair of this event?

#5 – Implementation – How will Alice know that Jane is on track? What do Jane and
Alice need to establish so Jane knows she can go to Alice if she has a question?

#6 – Feedback – What should Alice talk about to Jane during and after the event to let
Jane know how she did?
