AUBURN — For many brides-to-be,
the importance of the wedding cake is
rivaled only by the importance of the
dresses they will be wearing when they
take their vows.
“I’m not sure that is true all of the
time, but in my experience it is true most
of the time. I’d like to think so, anyway,”
said Linda Colbert, co-owner of Classic
City Cakes in Auburn.
Since 1980, Colbert and Classic City
Cakes have helped brides — and
grooms, too, for that matter — get the
cakes they want for their special days.
As the peak wedding season draws
near, Colbert has some advice on how to
make the wedding cake-buying process
go as smoothly as possible.
For starters, Colbert said, people
should come into a shop knowing how
many people will attend the reception.
“That way, we will be able to get the
right-sized cake to make sure everyone
gets a slice,” she said.
It is also helpful if the bride has an
idea of what type of cake she wants.
Knowing the theme of the wedding also
can be beneficial in creating the right
cake.
“A lot of the brides now are looking

of each season when choosing their
wedding dates.
“Choosing a date for the bride depends
on their budget, especially in this
economy,” according to Natalie Taylor,
special events planner for Taylor Rental in
Auburn. “If (the couple) chose a date that
is off-season for vendors or event halls,
sometimes they can get a discount.”
Wanting a particular flower can play a
big part in choosing a wedding date if the
bride has always foreseen it as part of her
wedding. Certain flowers, such as tulips
and some types of orchids or peonies,
may not be readily available for more
than few weeks a year —or else at a
premium cost.
“It just depends what the bride
foresees for their wedding,” Taylor said.

account. Or they have very large families
with other weddings to work around,”
Taylor said.
Taylor has seen a trend for couples to
choose a Friday or Sunday wedding,
which sometimes results in a discount
from reception halls and other wedding-
service providers.
“The nice thing anymore, there really
aren’t any more traditions or rules — the
girls kind of do just whatever they want,”
she said.
Event planner Linda Grant of Wedding
Dreams by Linda in Antwerp, Ohio, offers
advantages for each season:
• January, February, March — People
aren’t nearly as busy and guest attendance
is higher. The bride usually can get a
discounted rate from all vendors because
they are not as busy. White lights,
snowflakes and winter themes could be
used for decor. Flowers could be a lot of
calla lilies — they are white and elegant,
simple.
• April, May, June — Color tones
usually change to mores springy hues.
Black and white are the bridal colors all
year long, according to Grant, with the
accents from whatever color the bride
chooses. The advantage of April and May
is that the season starts to get busy, but it’s
not peak like June, so the availability is
better for reception halls and vendors.
Guests are not quite as busy as far as
vacations, leading to better attendance.
June is definitely the No. 1 wedding
month of the year. Grant has serviced
more than 13 weddings on the same date
during the month of June.
• July, August — Brides often use the
same colors as summer. Warm weather.
• September, October— “The fall is a
gorgeous time,” Grant said, and October
is rated right up there with June as far as
popularity.
“The weather has cooled down, but
you don’t have to worry about the snow. It
might be a bit chilly, but it’s a good time
of the year,” Grant said.
• November, December — “When you
go into November and December, you
enjoy the decor of the holidays, which is
nice,” said Grant. She recently used more
than 40 trees with white lights, canopies,
uplighting and spotlights for a winter
reception. Some of the holiday weddings
are among her peak days for attendance.
Given the chance to suggest a partic-
ular month for a wedding, Grant chose
November without skipping a beat.
“The weather is still promising, there
is not going to be a blizzard. And it’s the
least-busy month in the wedding
business,” Grant said.
But at the end of the day, Grant didn’t
offer a negative for any season.
“Any day is a good day,” she said.

Wedding planning can be stressful,
but once a bride and groom have
decided to walk down the aisle, the
invitations and wedding apparel choices
don’t have to be a hassle.
The invitation
The invitation has been compared to
a first impression. Deb Klink, owner of
Paper Gourmet in Auburn, certainly
agrees.
“What better insight into the event
and what is to come than the invitation
itself?” Klink asked.
Klink said invitations can be
overwhelming. From the shape, size, ink
color and paper weight, to choosing an
invitation with a RSVP card or a return
postcard, the choices can be daunting.
But, Klink said, couples shouldn’t be
discouraged.
“You shouldn’t have to compromise
your hopes and dreams because of your
budget,” she said. Often, a cheaper
alternative can be found without
sacrificing the overall quality of the
invitation, Klink said.

Most prospective brides know what they want, Wilson
commented.
“They look through bridal magazines and get ideas. It
helps if they can bring in photographs or a piece of the
wedding dress to determine color for flowers. One version of
aqua is different from another version,” she advised.
Sometimes brides have no idea what they want or seek
recommendations from the florist’s wedding specialist. Most
area florists have wedding planner books in their shops for
brides and the consultant to look through to get ideas.
“We can talk with them about the wedding and get a pretty
good idea what they would like,” Randall said.
Cost is major factor in selecting flowers for a wedding.
Florists can get pretty much whatever a prospective bride
wants as long as she is willing to pay for it. The cost for
wedding flowers in this area can range from $1,500 to
$20,000, Wilson said.
Roses, tulips, gardenias, daisies and hydrangeas and a
variety of springtime flowers are popular, according to Hite.
“Greenery is also popular in the church and reception
area,” she said.
Among the most popular colors are pink, aqua, teal and
blue.
“Right now there is no traditional color such as white,”

Avoid overspending on wedding ring package

KENDALLVILLE — When it comes
to choosing engagement and wedding
rings, it’s important to keep the cost
affordable, according to a Kendallville
jeweler.
“It’s really easy to overspend on the
wedding set,” said Morris Barker of
Barker’s Jewelry in downtown Kendal-
lville.
Couples need to put into perspective
what they can afford for rings, factoring
in other wedding costs, Barker said.
“A young marriage needs as little
stress as possible, and financial stress
adds a lot,” he advised.
Word was put out about a decade ago
that a young man should spend two to
three months’ income on a ring, but that
was a fabrication from people with a
vested interest in selling diamonds,
Barker explained.
“Take a look at what you can afford.
There’s no disgrace in going small to
begin with. If you’ve got the money, it’s
great to go big,” Barker said. If not, look
to go bigger in a few years when you
can better afford it.
A groom-to-be also should consider
his bride’s taste if he’s shopping for a
ring without her along, Barker said. In
most cases, the bride is with the groom.
Factors include the color of the metal,
Barker explained. Some women prefer
white gold to yellow gold, which affects
price.
“Traditionally, the center stone is a
diamond, but that’s not a hard-and-fast
rule either,” Barker said. He has set
everything from cornflower sapphires to
emeralds in wedding sets. Couples often
put the bride’s and groom’s birthstones
in the rings.
It’s important to know the shape of a
stone the bride would like, Barker said.
“Right now, princess cuts and rounds
are the most popular,” he noted.
But there are a lot of other shapes for
stones — heart-shaped, oval, emerald-
cut, marquis and some fancy cuts with
unusual shapes and different types of
facets, Barker said.
Once the shape is decided, Barker
said, the couple need to consider the
four “C’s” — color, clarity, carat weight
and cut.
Diamonds are priced differently
according to the amount of yellow in the
stone, Barker said. To a point, less
yellow equals a higher price. However, a

want is a must, according to Kendra
Klink, operations director at the Auburn
Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, a
popular reception site.
The bridge and groom should find
their reception hall “at least a year in
advance,” Klink said. “Being flexible is
always important.”
According to Klink, one of the first
things on the minds of brides and grooms
is how much they will have to spend.
“Cost is always one of the first
questions,” she said.
The No. 2 topic on people’s minds is
food.
Many venues offer their own catering
services and others, including the
museum, have a selected list of caterers.
Choosing a different caterer could cost
extra.

King and her husband have operated
the LaGrange studio for 22 years. While
King’s husband is taking the pictures,
King is busy managing a check sheet to
coordinate groupings so couples receive
the pictures they requested.
