Parivrajya Yoga

1. Introduction
1.1. Definition
The word Parivrajya means Saviyasa ot renun-
ciation. Parivrajya Yoga refers to combinations of
astrological factors, which cause renunciation, per-
haps combined with the adoption of certain disci-
plines. The exact degree of renunciation will de-
pend on the strength of the Yogas in the chart, and
many of these Yogas have been delineated in de-
tail in most classical texts.
1.2 What is Sariyasa?
Savitytsa asrama is also known as Turecyasrama
and in terms of varnasrama dharma, this state is
reckoned to be even beyond vaanaprastha, which is,
a voluntary withdrawal from worldly concerns. In
Vaanaprasiha, there is still a certain amount of “
ity” and “order” about a person, whereas a
Sarityasi is one who roams restlessly in search of
abiding Beauty and Truth. He is the one without
roots. Thus, Sarityase is logically the last stage in a
man’s life-evolution, when he’s mature and wise
enough to realize that the entire world is but maaya
and in its renunciation turns to the ultimate Truth.
While vaanaprastha is virtually a “physical
movement away from all material concerns and
actions”, some consider Sayityasa more of “an in-
ner experience”. According to them, the Sariyasi
is the man whom the Spirit has made “ekaki” or
“alone”, since “no one is different from, or other
than, myself”. He cannot perceive any divandva
(duality) with anything else. Such a feeling of “one-
ness” is, of course, rare even among the saffron—
clad, because unfortunately, in most cases Sartyasa
remains largely external, confined only to kaashaya
vastra.
‘The true Pariorajya is only when the maaya of
“I and mine” is wholly obliterated and the renun-
ciation is genuine and total only when the
renounciate himself is included in the renunciation.
Such inner awakening enables the Yogi to soar be-
yond the trappings of the so-called self...name,
nature, address...beyond every bondage and
pretence...beyond ali considerations of dharma-
adharma and beyond all karma.
Such detachment bestows upon him an unfet-
tered vision, which can show what the eye can
directly never see. Rapturous and intoxicated with
the incandescent inner scape, he floats free, like
air above the earth, barely touched by the world
and its many mundanities, despite being a part of
it
Now, does this mean that Sarhyasa symbolizes
inaction or a dereliction of action? Does it imply a
willful abandonment of work? To understand
Pariorajya Tattoa in its true essence, I turn to the
Bhagavad-Gita, where the Lord in his inimitable
and unequivocal fashion had defined renunciation
in classic terms not as cessation of action but as,
cessation of attachment to action and its fruits. The
Lord, in fact, as an embodiment of Dharmic ac-
tion, had repeatedly upheld performance as op-
posed to non-performance.
In Chapter 5 (Savityasa Yoga) and sloka 11,
Bhagavan had summed up the essence of a
Sarityasin as one

“The Santytsi/Yog, abandoning attachment, performs work with
the body, the mind, te intellect and the senses only, for self
purification’.
Narada Parivrajika Upanishad 3.77 also avers
that “The very day on which a man finds himself
to be free from all inner attachment, that is the day
on which he should go forth and roam abroad”.
Jyotish Digest ¢ Jul-Sep 2004 192. Astro-basis
Reflecting on the above throws up interesting
connotations for astrology. Translated into astro-
parlance, the sloke is talking about attachment (Ju-
piter), bodily action (Mars), mind (Moon), intellect
(Mercury), senses (Venus) and abandonment (Sat-
urn). Now pieced together, all these planets fit into
three earth signs of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn,
celebrating the “prithvi Tattoa”. This birth, this
body, these attachments bon of mind, this egobor
out of intellect and these actions which are meant
to perpetuate “punarapi jananam punarapi
maranam” bind the soul to the earth or Prakrithi.
In Bhagavad-Gita, Sri Krishna again categorically
stated that it is the involvement (Prakriti) in action
that generates kerma, and that detached action
acerues no karma,
‘These three earth signs are ruled by planets representing fala
Tatton (Vers), pritot Tatton (Mercury) and Vayu Tatton Sat-
turn), which are essential fr all life on earth, and itis interesting
tonote again that Mercury and Venus are always with the Sun,
trying to seduce the soul into repeated rebirts. Its pethaps no
coincidence that both in Taurus and Virgo, the planet which gets
exalted therein is also a kindred soul, that is, it has the same
Tatton as the lord ofthe sign, But when one gets to Capricorn, it
allchanges
‘When one closely serutinizes the Karma Bhava,
the final earth sign, what becomes apparent is the
innate desire to break away from earth, reach up-
wards... upwards...towards mid-heaven through
Yagnya (action). This sign exalts the Leaping Fire,
‘The Kundalini, symbolized by Mars, whose sight is,
always oordlavamukha, though he is the Son of the
earth, the Bhoomi-putra
Mars, apart from his many obvious significa-
tions, also represents the gift of solitude, the abil:
ity to follow the spiritual light within, and rapid
spiritual advancement. It is not strange that vari-
ous martial arts and athletic activities (ruled by
Mars) also include meditation.
I think the Jupiter who is debilitated in Cap:
com is primarily the Jupiter of Cancer (attach-
ments and caring), and not of Sagittarius, who him-
self is touched with fire. He is also not the Jupiter
of Pisces, who signifies Moksa. It is again not Sat-
urn per se, who debilitates Jupiter, because in
Aquarius, which is the true Tattoa Rasi of Saturn,
Jupiter is considered pretty strong, What appar-
ently pulls down Jupiter in Capricorn is not the
“gravity” of the “Lord of the Rings”, but the sheer
rigidity of highly structured and finite Prithvi Tattoa
of the sign itself, as opposed to the elastic and infi-
nite Akasa Tatton of Jupiter.
20 Jyotish Digest # Jul-Sep 2004
It is perhaps not incidental that the Lords of
Karma and Karmaphala are one and the same (Sat-
urn - Vilyu Tatfoa), and in this way Vedic Astrol-
ogy clearly indicates that detachment/non-attach-
ment to action and its result as the only path to-
wards Brahma Jnana and Brafina Nircana,
2.1 Yogas causing Parivrajya Yoga
From the above debate, what emerges clearly
is that the fulcrum of all “uninvolved action” or
Parivrajya is Capricorn and the predominant
Parivrajya Yogas are those in which the lagna, the
lagna lord or the Moon comes under the influence
of Saturn or Mars. If Jupiter is also involved in
these Yogas, then this individual asceticism con-
solidates into institutional asceticism.
My view is that Parivrajya yoga is a Raja yoga
ofa different kind and should not be confused with
Daritira yoga or Raja bhanga yoga. It’s a voluntary
distancing or giving up of physical/material com-
forts, That Pariorajya yoga is a Rajyayoge is also
evidenced by the fact that the prime condition for
this yoga to manifest is
2.2 Four or more planets in a single
Bhava
Four or more planets in strength occupying a single house with
Raja Yoga present in the horoscope.
‘The type of asceticism depends upon the strongest planet in the
combination
‘Mars produces Sakyas who worshipped Devi,
the goddess of power; Mercury produces
Jeevikas who worshipped Vishnu, the preserver
of the universe; Jupiter makes the person a
Bhikshu, a mendicant, -professing Samkhya phi-
losophy. Moon makes Vriddhas who believe in
Supreme God and go around begging alms with a
skull-like pot. Saturn produces Nirgranthas who
roam naked like the Nagas (q.v.); Sun makes a
person Vanyasana who believe in simple living and
high thinking, possessing high intellect and is spiri-
tually developed.
This is especially so, if the house harboring
these planets is a Kendra and one of the planets
involved is the lord of the 12th house (Moksa). The
strongest of them will denote the type of renuncia~
tion as per Parasara,
Placement in the Kendra’s is important because
then they will most likely cause a great influence
on the 4th house (heart) which will develop the
desire for renunciation. If the 4th house is left out
of the combination, then the renunciation will be
only superficial. Involvement of Saturn asNaisargika Karaka for renunciation is im-
portant and the yoga must affect the
Moon or the 4th house (mind), other-
wise the desire for giving up enjoy
‘ment will not occur.
Chart 1: Sri Satya Saibaba
Itis a well known fact that four
or more planets in a Kendra give
great spirituality.
Depending on the sign and house involved,
the spiritual directions should be determined
In the above chart, the occult
sign of Scorpio rises with four plan-
ets in it. The GL and HL are also on
the ascendant and testify to the raja
yoga enjoyed by the saint. In this chart
one can witness the 4** and 12 lords in-
volved totally in the Parivrajya yoga and the
strong lagna lord, Mars, aspecting the lagna from.
his Malatrikona sign further adds strength to the
Parivrajya yoga, which started early in life.
Sri Sanjay Rath opines that if one of these four
planets is in Svaksetra, Milatrikona etc, then the
Parivrajya yoga will also transform into a Maha
pttrusa yoga where the native notches up great
achievements. If four or more planets are in
Dustana, then although the person is spiritual,
there will not be any Parivrajya.
If all the planets be possessed of strength, the
native enters into the holy orders of all the planets.
The native gets initiated into the holy order of the
planet, whose Dasa gets initiated first. Then he
relinquishes this holy order of this planet at the
commencement of the Dasa of the next planet and
accepts the holy order, signified by him.
However, there are a few riders:
1.1.1 Planetary War
If the strongest planet be con-
queror, whether he is in North, or South,
but amongst the other four only one,
who is in the North, is the conqueror
and that in the South is considered
defeated in the planetary war.
If the planet, who leads the
native to asceticism, is conquered
in planetary war by another
planet or planets at the time of
birth, the person will relinquish
the holy order, in which he be-
comes initiated.
1412 Combustion
=~ If strong planets, capable of
F leading, to asceticism, be obscured by
Satya Sat sun's rays (that is they be combust),
the person born, in spite of having reve:
ence for the holy order, will not become ini
tiated in that holy order. If the other planets lose
their strength (in spite of being in their exaltation
Rasi’s etc.), as a result of combustion, the native
will enter the holy order signified by Sun, that is,
he will become a Tapasvi.
2.3 Other important combinations
The dispositor of the Moon receives no aspect
but aspects Saturn. The Saravali states that if the
lord of the Moon sign aspects Saturn while Saturn
is in an angle, the native will lose his fortunes only
to enter into a religious order. The dispositor of
the Moon is weak and is only aspected by Saturn.
The Moon is in Drekkana of Satur, in Navarhsa
of Saturn or Mars and is aspected by Satur. Sat-
ur aspects Jupiter, the Moon and Lagna, and Ju-
piter are in the 9th house. Saturn in the 9th devoid
of aspects and existence of Raja yoga will make

yoga
Saturn aspecting
Venus and Ketu in
Svathsa (Navarnsa
Lagna or Karakarnsa)
produces a Tapasvi.
But if only Ketu is
aspected, then the na-
tive is likely to be an
imposter. All three of Saturn, Venus and Ketu are
required for a good Tapasvi and it is the involve-
ment of Venus in the yoga that bestows sincerity.
Of course, Tapasvi Yoga need not culminate in re-
nunciation and it need not even necessarily have
spiritual connotations. Anybody who pursues a
particular goal passionately, with single minded
focus can be termed a Tapasvi. But this kind of
exclusive focus can adversely affect the other ar-
eas in native’s life and indirectly lead him to
Parivrajya yoga.
Chart 4: Gautama Buddha
Gautama Buddha, (14 April 623 BC based on
Dr.B.V.Raman: Notable horoscopes) from whom.
Buddhism originated, is a shining example of
Parivrajya. He was born to be a king, much married
and father of a son, yet he wandered away from
all that felicity in the full prime of life, opting for a
tough and untraced path in his single minded
search for an elusive Truth. What transformed
Siddhartha into Buddha? Is this answer available
in his chart?
Gautama’s natal lagna Cancer reflects his
thoughtful and sensitive nature
and Moon with great digbala in the

violence and right action. The powerful conjunction
of 5 planets in the strongest Kendra aspecting
Moon (lagna lord), is indicative of the strength of
Parivrajya yoga and since Sun, the 2” lord is in
exaltation and is most powerful among the planets
involved in Parivrajya yoga, the yoga started early
in life and his Sarhyasa, when it happened, was
total.
2.6 Affliction to Upapada lagna / Venus
The strength and placement of Venus (being
the Kalatra-Karaka) is also to be seen -whether a
bad marriage could lead to renunciation. A com-
bust Venus loses strength and the karakatva; if
placed in 8th it brings death or deals a death-like
blow to the marriage/spouse.
‘The Upapada plays a vital role in'the determi-
nation of Parivrajya Yoga - Whether there is prom-
ise of marriage and if so, what promise does the
marriage hold. Sashtaashtaka relationship between
AL and UL; Lord of UL being in the 12th from it
indicating qualities of renouncing.
Afflictions to the 2nd from Upapada, which
give a loss of the partner, could in some cases in-
cline one to a renunciate life, provided that the rest
of the chart supports it. If the 2nd from Upapada
has malefic aspects or conjunctions, the native
loses his wife or renounces the world.
Here, to my mind, springs the chart of Sri
Ramakrishna Paramaharhsa, who despite being
married to Sarada Devi remained celibate all
through his life.
Chart 5: Sri Ramakrishna Paramaharisa
Of course, the lagna and Moon (Aquarius) are
in Saturn’s sign, and Saturn himself is exalted in
the 9" from lagna and portends the eventual es-

lord Mars himself, and their debility in Navarhsa,
thus purging his marriage of all passion.
One can not help but notice that inhis chart
10H has Ketu who is again on Dasamsa lagna,
aspected by Saturn and Venus, resulting in a
Tapasvi yoga. Dasamsa lagna is
examination of his chart would yield a few
pointers that would suggest Parivrajya

Chart 6: Srt Aurobindo

in the house of exalted Jupiter, of

the 7" lord and the 7* house itself is

‘Mars, the Lord of A. Further, strong
Ketu conjoins A7 and is aspected very
powerfully by Rahu. Of course, Jupiter’s

as is the beneficial lordship of the UL by Ve~

24 Jyotish Digest # Jul-Sep 2004ter examining quite a few charts of celebrated
monks/Sarnyasi, [have come to the startling con-
clusion that strength of Sun is essential for
Parivrajya yoga as Sun alone represents the color
Orange/Kashaya, which reflects true renunciation.
Perhaps, one should remember that Sun represents
the heart...the center of all pulls and pushes,
whether it is a human being or the solar system.
He is also the Sthira Atmakaraka...the orfginal
impulse. I find that when Sun influences the lagna,
4% house or the Moon, the result is great detach”
ment, which is soul-deep and spontaneous as op-
posed fo the Parivrajya yoga triggered by Saturn,
Which is often born out of tragedy and depression.
Both are as different as solitude is distinct from
loneliness.
Chart 7: Swami Vivekananda
Perhaps no other chart can illustrate this fact
as well as the chart of Swami Vivekananda, Swami
Vivekananda’s chart has Sagittarius rising with
vargottama Sun, the AK and the lagna lord Jupiter
happens to be the 4" Jord too. Please mark the as-
pect of Sun on the 4* house and also on the Moon,
Who of course is with Saturn (in Parivartana with
Mercury) ...all this only reinforcing the Parivrajya
yoga. The 3“ and 6" houses from Arudha lagna
have benefics while malefics occupy 2" and 4*
houses. Sun’s placement has already been com-
mented upon, Please note the subtie difference
here...Swami Vivekananda had not sought
Sarhyaisa due to distress but because of a rare rest-
lessness of soul.
Chart 8: Adi Sankara
In Sankara’s chart again, Saturn aspects Moon
from Sagittarius, with whose lord he is in
Parivartana. This Parivartana along with Ketu’s
position in the 5% house gave Sankara a rapier-
sharp intellect, unmatched debating skills and eru-
dite eloquence (2% lord exalted in 10%) which has
people gasping in admiration even in the 20" cen-
tury. In this chart Saturn has no impact on the 4"
house, but Sun does have and despite there being
only 3 planets in 10" house, the combination of 4"
and 12 lords with Sun, I think, triggered the
Parivrajya yoga and since Sun is the second lord,
the renunciation and penance started very early in
life.

Ktishna’s chart, perhaps hinting at his multi-fac-
eted and intriguing personality.
A renunciate in the making?
Now, is Parivrajya yoga evident only in the
charts of celebrated monks and celestials? What
about you and me? Using the principles of
Parivrajya yoga, could you please tell me whether
this person be one more to tread the uncommon
path?

28 The Role of Divisional Charts
If the potential for Parivrajya Yoga exists in the
Rasi chart, it can be reconfirmed from D-20, the
Virhsatiga, which indicates the extent of spiritual
development of the native. Debilitated planets in
Vishsitiga indicate deep spirituality. The position
of Ista Devata and Dharma Devata vis-ri-vis the
‘Virhsarhga lagna / Atmakaraka also indicate the
extent of Upasana. Further, the D-10 chart is also
to be perused to verify if the promise of Parivrajya
held out in the Rasi chart is likely to fructify or not.

would occur. This has to be done
