Pott’s Disease

(Tuberculosis
Spondylitis)
 

It has been documented in


ancient mummies from Egypt
and Peru and is one of the oldest
demonstrated diseases of
humankind. Percival Pott
presented the classic description
of spinal tuberculosis in 1779.
 
Pott’s disease is tuberculosis of
the spine, the commonest site for
bone and joint tuberculosis, being
involved in more that half the
cases. It is also known as
tuberculosis spondylitis. It is the
presentation of extra pulmonary
tuberculosis that affect the spine.
RISK FACTORS
-Family history of
pulmonary tuberculosis
-Poor socio-economic
condition
-HIV infection
 
 
ETIOLOGY
A progressively destructive
disease resulting from the activity
of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in
bone or articular structures. It is
caused by tuberculosis infection
in another part of the body, such
as lungs or lymph nodes.

NURSING MANAGEMENT:
1. Monitor vital signs.
2. Reposition patient in side lying or
prone every 2 hours
3. Promote and emphasize need for
good rest habit
4. Have a patient a proper diet (high
calcium, high fiber and Vitamin C)
5. Teach client how to perform
ROM exercises
6. Provide from mattress and
small pillows.
7. Relieving spinal cord off of
pressure that causes pain
8. Investigate report of pain
9. Keep skin clean and dry
10.Provide information .
