Five events not to miss this week april 1
FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE FAIR
This is the last weekend
for the South Texas State
Fair, so if you haven’t been
yet, you’ve got until the gates
close Sunday.
Friday’s music lineup might
be the best of the whole run,
with two fantastic blues acts
who will tear the house down:
Shinyribs Russell and Hamil-
ton Loomis.
Shinyribs Russell has a
lock on country swamp blues
and has a huge following in
Austin and Houston. He gets
almost psychedelic some-
times with that voice of his,
so it should be a wonderful
show. Read more about him

And in the back of the bar in a tiny three-stall bath-
room, nine girls clamor to dress themselves in a space
barely large enough to hold them, let alone their over-
sized bags full of sequins, floral-print tops and harem
pants.
The ladies, members of the E’blaja Fashion Coali-

tion, dress hurriedly as one member grabs the mi-
crophone and stalls by inviting women around the
room to strut up on stage and show off what they’re
wearing. The crowd goes wild for the impromptu pre-
fashion show fashion show — a waitress even strutted
across the stage with a tray of food balanced on her
fingertips — but is clearly anxious to see the pros.
By now, E’blaja (pronounced ee-blah-jay) has had
nine shows and the modelesque young women (and
one man) have changed in cars, alleys, even a Wal-
Mart parking lot. But this bathroom, they say, is the
smallest so far.

ometimes we are too busy to stop and
indulge in the beauty that surrounds
us, so from time to time we need a
reminder to slow down and dress up.
This look is an ode to seizing the day.
This ensemble suits a sunny outing that calls
for something casual but a little bit refined. My
hunt for something wonderful ended when I
spotted this sundress.
The lovely mint color sends you to a spring
dreamland and the crocheted-style neckline
and back are simply irresistible.
The dress is a trapeze cut, so belt it to de-
fine your waist. The belt’s zigzag pattern and
wooden closure create a nice focal point.
It’s a shame to cover up the back of the dress,
but the vest provides a more coverage and
throws a unique, playful vibe into the mix. The
cut of the vest is part structured and part flowy,
so it keeps you from looking frumpy.
Step out in these Sam Edelman sling-back
sandals, a casual and versatile addition to your
spring and summer wardrobe.
The well-crafted ring is vintage and made
from turquoise and sterling silver. Turquoise is
always in style and it makes for a striking state-
ment accessory.
This look pairs well with mimosas and Sandals, Sam

ast Thursday at The Gig on Crockett Street, a solid
lineup of indie bands — both local and visiting —
brought something a little different than The Gig’s
usual lineup.
Local indie rock band Hello Chief gave a command
performance as usual and reminded us how lucky we
are to get to hear the undulating
soundscape they fill the room
with.
They were followed by Fresh
Millions, a high-energy Austin in-

Local rockers We Were Wolves

String Band took the
stage at the Logon Cafe last Friday
night and played hours of bluegrass,
gypsy and country songs to a packed
house.
Their energy and enthusiasm —
and awesome outfits and facial hair,
I might add — was immediately evi-

strength lies in their precision. These
guys could play so hard and fast, it’s a
wonder their fiddle didn’t catch fire.
