State Fair crowd a family friendly show Friday night night, it’ll be only his sec-
ond show in town.
And his first one ... well,

this show won’t be much
like that first show.
“I played the Vortex,” he
said, referencing the now-
closed hole-in-the-wall on
11th Street. “It was pretty
rowdy.”
Russell was born at Chris-
tus St. Elizabeth Hospital
and went to Regina Howell,
but left Beaumont when he
was pretty young, as his dad
was in the oil business and
moved a lot.
But he stayed in South-
east Texas, living in Hous-
ton and Shreveport, La.,
and cut his teeth playing at
Louisiana biker bars and
other Southeast Texas dives
before moving to Austin
and finding success with his
country/rock/Texas psy-

chedelic band The Gourds.

You can count on his fair
show being a little more family-
friendly.
“I’m looking forward to playing
Beaumont,” Russell said. “I used
to go to the fair as a kid.”
Russell — with a golden voice
that begs to be heard in a saw-
dust-filled honky-tonk — strad-
dles the line between country,
swamp pop and Texas psychedel-
ic, to a magical effect. He appeals
to blue-collar country folk and
Austin hipsters alike, but he’s got
some deep blues roots that make
his music incredibly versatile.
It’s the psychedelic edge of this
singer/songwriter’s work that re-
ally gets me. Listen to “Morning’s
Night” on his Reverb Nation page
to see what I mean. The guitar
and pedal steel on that track is so
wistful and imaginative that you
suddenly feel like you’re floating
through space. Texas space.
When I talked to Russell,
he was taking a break from a
recording session at a studio
outside Woodstock, N.Y., where
he’s recording another album
with country/blues/rock outfit
The Gourds. You know, the guys
responsible for the countrified
cover of Snoop Dogg’s cover of
“Gin & Juice.”
They’ve been together so long
and recorded so many albums,
Russell has lost count.
“I think it’s 10, best we can tell,”
he said with a laugh. “Maybe 11.”
But this album is the first
they’ve recorded outside of Aus-
tin, he said, let alone across the
country.
“It’s snowing outside, that’s
a big difference,” he said. “It’s a
huge difference. Being away from
home, we’re all just living in a
house here together and coming
over (to the studio) every morn-
ing. We’re together the whole
time and that makes a huge dif-
ference.”
That focus — as well as the
change of scenery — will cer-
tainly have an effect on the final
recording, Russell said.
“We’re very distracted with our
lives while we’re (in Austin) work-
ing,” he said. “It’s nice just having
time to do nothing but this.”
That album is due out in
September, but lucky for us, we
don’t have to wait that long to
hear Shinyribs’ incredible, down-
home vocals. Check him out at
the fair when he comes through,
because this Beaumont boy
doesn’t make it home too often.

girl with a tiny voice,
but when she plays
live at The Ticket on
Friday night, your chest will

newest first lady of rap, and
she’s certainly got the prac-
tice to get her there.
She started perform-
ing when she was little at
church, clubs her mom
owned and with a group
she formed with her little
sister.

of the mirror,” she said, laughing.
But a couple of years back, her
bass-heavy track “Call Me for
that Good” caught the attention
of Cash Money Records, and JB’s
days of performing in front of a
bathroom mirror were suddenly
behind her.

Money, she’s become a regional
celebrity who’s on her way up.

She’s currently planning a tour,
she said, so she can bring her
high-energy shows to cities
across the U.S.
“Its real fun to me,” she said.
“I like to entertain and I’ll be the
one at the front of the room.”
And she’s not hard to look at,
either, with haunting amber eyes
and a figure that ensures your
eyes won’t likely wander away
from her. Particularly when she’s
dancing.
“My shows, they vary,” she
said. “I try not to do the same
things all the time. I start off with
something slow then get the
crowd crunk.”
And her songs — an amal-
gamation of hardcore rap and
happy, up-beat hip-hop — cer-
tainly make it easy to move.

behind her — this tiny Houston
rapper is going to get big.

acts passed
through
Austin during the 2011
SXSW Music Conference,
so clearly there was plenty
of good music to be heard.
But the eloquent and fiery
keynote address from Bob
Geldof had a disconcerting
effect on my intake of the
whole thing.

VALERIE JUNE
1 I knew nothing about
this Memphis singer-
songwriter, but she
made an instant impression
performing with the assurance
of some of the great singer-
songwriters from years past.
June accompanied her rich
and expressive voice with just
guitar, banjo and ukulele. Hers
is a soulful sort of roots music
with potential for far-reaching
appeal. The accompaniment
sounds old-time folky, but
something about June’s other-
worldly voice makes her music
feel very much of its era.

YUCK
This English band
deliberately dials back
to the early ’90s and
that rich era of alterna-rock,
a logical step since just five
years ago bands were doing
retro-’80s stuff to great at-
tention (though short-term
interest). Yuck is easy with a
melody and puts enough mus-
tard on its songs to push them
across to those who do feel
like rock left them behind.
THE BASEBALL
3 PROJECT
It sounded like a ter-
rible idea on paper:
Music vets Steve Wynn (The
Dream Syndicate), Scott Mc-
Caughey (Young Fresh Fellows,
R.E.M.) and Peter Buck (yes,
him) creating original music
about baseball. But Wynn
and McCaughey could make
a song cycle about funeral
homes sound like radiant pop,
and while there’s obvious glee
in this project (Who doesn’t
aspire to rhyme something
with Calvin Schiraldi?), their
subject also lends itself to
gravitas. Like the sport itself,
these songs are full of intrica-
cies, fame and obscurity, love
and heartbreak and death.
JAMES BLAKE
4 This English producer/
performer is likely
to make his biggest
impression in other, more
electronica-friendly lands, as
evidenced by the bullying yam-
mering during his lovely set at
Stubbs. His music was force-
ful when it needed to be but
more often fragile and lovely
as swaying reeds in a breeze.
Add that description to the
word “dubstep” and his U.S.
stock plummets. Too bad, as
his set of uncompromisingly
gorgeous music offers a very
viable intro for those wanting
to try progressive electronic
music that has much in com-
mon with pretty pop from
pretty much any era.
RAPHAEL SAADIQ
5 Saadiq is the kind of
natural performer that
seemed to go extinct
after the ’60s. He’s the best
thing to happen to R&B in a
very long time, making good
on the promise that Terence
Trent D’Arby nearly turned into
a career.
WILD FLAG
7 With two-thirds of
Sleater-Kinney on
board, this band isn’t
a huge departure from that
one. Despite its Portland(ia)
location, the group found
some inspiration from sunny
California pop, especially in
the bright vocals that set it
apart from S-K.

content — an experience that has

and comfortably into the Web
than any other device in history.
It now boasts front- and rear-
facing cameras, a dual-core 1
GHz processor and nine times
the graphic performance.
The combination of those new
features elevates the iPad 2 to a
new level of usability — a mark
yet unmatched by any other
tablet maker.
The iPad 2 is now available in
18 flavors. Users can choose from
sizes of 16, 32 and 64 GB, between
WiFi-only and 3G-connected
models using Verizon or AT&T,
and also between black and
white. Prices range from $499 to
$829.
Dual cameras
The iPad 2’s front- and rear-
suited for video capturing. The
higher quality camera on the
back takes 720p video, which
Apple calls HD.
The quality of that video is
commendable, although much
less so in low-light conditions.
Paired with Apple’s new iMovie
app ($4.99), the iPad 2 is an all-in-
one video capturing and editing
device.
The front-facing camera al-
lows the iPad to join the suite
of devices linked to FaceTime,
Apple’s video chatting software.
Users can place video calls to
other Apple devices, including
the iPod Touch, iPhone and Mac
computers.
The FaceTime experience is
slick and the quality of the video
calls over WiFi is excellent.
Both the front- and rear-facing
cameras on the iPad 2 allow users
to take still photographs, but the
quality on both is less than poor.
Apple isn’t saying how many
megapixels the cameras have, but
several reports rate the rear cam-
era at less than one megapixel.
Apple rates the iPad 2’s battery
life at 10 hours. In my tests, the
iPad 2 exceeded that mark, reach-
ing just shy of 11 hours while
streaming video through Netflix
over WiFi.

Without constant use, expect
the iPad 2 to last several days
between charges, just like the
original version.
Leading apps
The iPad’s best feature contin-
ues to be Apple’s industry-lead-
ing app ecosystem. Apple boasts
more than 65,000 apps built for
the iPad’s 9.7-inch touch screen
display.
The biggest competitor here,
Google’s Android operating
system, has fewer than 100 apps
built for a tablet screen.
Apple also upgraded the iPad’s
Safari Web browser to make
navigating around the Internet
snappier. Pages load much faster
than on the original iPad.
Users of the original iPad
should see a similar bump in
speed when they upgrade to the
new software version now avail-
able.
The iPad 2 continues Apple’s
feud with the popular video
format Flash. Don’t expect a
compromise here, even as it
renders much of the Web’s video
unwatchable on the iPad.
The screen is also disappoint-
ingly the same as the model
released last year. Apple’s iPhone
4 has a stunning high-resolution
display and many had hoped that
screen would be included on the
iPad 2.
Cover kudos
One of the most exciting things
about the iPad 2 is the innovative
cover designed to protect it.
The Smart Cover was con-
ceived alongside the iPad 2,
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has said,
and it shows. It works seamlessly
with the new tablet, snapping
on and snapping closed using
magnets.
Opening the cover automati-
cally turns the iPad 2 on, sav-
ing the few seconds that were
required to wake up the previous
version. It’s like a refrigerator light
— always on when you need it.
When the cover retracts and
folds up, it serves as a stand in
two positions — one perfect for
typing and one for watching
video.
The covers come in 10 ver-
sions — five vibrant colors in
polyurethane ($39) and five more
subdued tones in leather ($69).
The genius here is that the
Smart Cover makes the iPad 2
feel like an entirely new device.
And while it seems silly to suggest
buying a $500-plus device to use
a $40 case, it now feels impossible
to use the iPad 2 any other way.
Ahead of the others
The iPad 2’s only compelling
competition, the Android-based
Motorola Xoom, hit the market
without the features that were
supposed to make it an iPad
killer: support for Flash video,
microSD cards and Verizon’s
next-generation 4G LTE wireless
network. (All of those features are
coming “soon,” though, through
software upgrades.)
And it dropped with a gulp-
worthy price tag: $800.
Placed next to the iPad 2, the
Xoom looks clunky and bloated.
It’s not often that Apple gets
mentioned as the company with
a price advantage. But the Cali-
fornia tastemaker has managed
to undercut its competition on
price.
There is no better tablet on the
market than the iPad 2.

the exterior looks bat-
tered and weary, all of that
melts away when you walk
in this warm, comfortable
— and classy! — joint.

of seating, a big bar and a stage
to sing your heart out in karaoke.
With tall ceilings, you’d think the
acoustics would be off, but it
was easy to hear and be heard,

audience. The walls are all wood
paneling and brick, and the object
of my attention for a good while
was the beautiful chandelier hang-
ing overhead.
The crowd: is friendly, entertain-
ing and generous. People really
respond to a smile at this bar, and
want to laugh with you. It’s not a
bar where you will sit in a corner
and be ignored. Your evening is
shared with those around you,
friend or stranger. This involuntary
companionship is a large part of
what makes Speak Easy Lounge a
must-not-miss bar experience.

The E’blaja Fashion Coalition
is about more than looks

I
t’s Wednesday night and the karaoke machine
at the Speak Easy Lounge in Port Arthur is just
warming up, as are the locals, sipping mixed
drinks at tables scattered around the dance
floor.
W
And in the back of the bar in a tiny three-stall bath-
room, nine girls clamor to dress themselves in a space
barely large enough to hold them, let alone their over-
sized bags full of sequins, floral-print tops and harem
pants.
The ladies, members of the E’blaja Fashion Coali-
v
tion, dress hurriedly as one member grabs the mi-
crophone and stalls by inviting women around the
room to strut up on stage and show off what they’re
wearing. The crowd goes wild for the impromptu pre-
fashion show fashion show — a waitress even strutted
across the stage with a tray of food balanced on her
fingertips — but is clearly anxious to see the pros.
By now, E’blaja (pronounced ee-blah-jay) has had
nine shows and the modelesque young women (and
one man) have changed in cars, alleys, even a Wal-
Mart parking lot. But this bathroom, they say, is the
smallest so far.

“The quick-changes walk last,”
explains coalition member Jalissa
Williams. “The outfits with zips
and ties go first.”
The models are young — rang-
ing in age from 18 to 22 — and
technically inexperienced. But for
a fashion group that’s only been
around a few months, they’re
already making waves by appear-
ing at fashion events and in music
videos.
And as they’re asked to partici-
pate in more and more events,
one thing is for sure: This won’t
be their last quick bathroom
outfit change.
Last November, coalition
founder Ebony Tezeno had an
abundance of clothing and a
head full of ideas. Lamar Univer-
sity proved to have just the tool to
help get some of her ideas off the
ground.
Each year, the Lamar Fashion
Merchandising Association hosts
Rehab — an open market/con-
cert combination popular with
shoppers and music fans alike —
on the Lamar campus.
“One day I was sittin’ down and
thinkin’ ... I do a lot of shopping,”
Tezeno said. “I thought, let’s get
together and dress up some girls.”
That night, Tezeno rounded
up some girls and showcased
E’blaja’s first looks. By the end
of the night, a contact list at the
E’blaja table had more than 40
names of young men and women
interested in what Tezeno was
doing.
“I wanted to show some differ-
ent styles and bring something
different to Lamar,” she said of
participating in Rehab. “It went
great.”
That night, E’blaja Fashion
Coalition was born.
The coalition has 18 members,
both male and female. Chasity
Bobino, a 20-year-old Port Arthur
resident, is the only local native
in the group, but many of the girls
live in the area to attend Lamar
University.
Fashion isn’t the only thing
on their brains. The members’
studies include business, com-
munication, psychology and
pre-pharmacy.
Each time the women partici-
pate in a fashion walk, Tezeno
takes the money they make and
puts it into an account. Clothes
are purchased using that money,
but every fall semester, Tezeno
also doles out money to coalition
members to pay for books and
tuition.
“It’s basically to better their
education,” she said. “A lot of
(coalition members) live a differ-
ent lifestyle. A lot of them have a
different story to tell, too.”
The girls also gather at least
once a month to have “bonding
nights” where they play cards, go
bowling or watch TV at Tezeno’s
apartment.
“I love the fact that it’s more
than just fashion shows,” said
19-year-old Joia Lison, a Lamar
pre-pharmacy major from Lufkin.
But the core theme of their
group is all about the looks.
“We get to set trends,” said
18-year-old Chassity Fowler, a
Lamar psychology student from
Houston.
On the runway, the girls tend
to rock a lot of vintage mixed
with contemporary pieces. Their
Speak Easy Lounge show was an
amalgamation of ’70s and ’80s
touches with plenty of sequins
and eccentrically mixed patterns.
Locally, Tezeno said she likes
to pick up pieces at Treasure
House, a second-hand store
downtown.
“It’s cheap and they have very
good customer service,” she said.
She also buys at local auctions
and estate sales.
Naturally, plenty of photos
of the girls dressed to the nines
made it on Facebook. And a
couple months back, one of those

folks have an inherent
sense of style and oth-
ers don’t? You know,
those folks that you’re
always saying, “I love
what you’re wearing, but
I could never pull that
off!”
Are they really so different
from us average Joes and Janes,
or do they have secrets to share
that can help all of us find our
own way sartorially? I spoke to
some of the standout stylistas
of Southeast Texas to find some
answers.
At 21, E’blaja Fashion Coali-
tion founder Ebo-
ny Tezeno has a
pretty solid sense
of herself and her
own style.
“I’m a vintage
girl,” she said.
“Probably from
being around
my grandma so
much.”
Even so, her look changes
day to day, but always features
sparkles, bright colors and big
rings.
“When you look good, you feel
good,” she said. “First impres-
sions are important, and when
people see you looking good, it
says something positive about
you.”
To those who are venturing
out and developing their sense
of style, she says confidence is
key.
“Be confident in yourself and
your look,” she said. “That plays
a big part.”

who wants to be unique.”
Vanessa describes her own
style as feminine and classic
with an edge, inspired by some
of her favorite musicians such
as Jenny Lewis, Kate Nash and
Lily Allen.
“I’m drawn to people that are
brave enough to not do exactly
what everyone else is doing,”
she said. “That’s being fashion
forward.”
But for those who may just
be figuring it out, “Try with one
piece at a time. Make one
brave move in a typical outfit,
and it goes from there.”
When she talks
to me about her

a vintage shawl
jacket, T-shirt and
a chain halter she
made herself, it’s obvious that
22-year-old Chelsey Lopez has a
passion for unique things.
“For a long time, my friends
and family would ask me, ‘What
are you wearing?’ ‘I don’t know,
something just told me this
looks good together,’” she said.
Lopez is a student in the
Fashion Merchandising depart-
ment at Lamar and hopes one
day to be a personal stylist.
“Personal style is you, howev-
er you feel comfortable and con-
fident,” she said. “Some goth
kid at the mall has personal
style, and so does the lady with
lots of turquoise jewelry and a
long braid. It’s not my style, but
it’s still style.”

Money Records artist Just Brit-
tany’s latest music video for her
single “Slumber Party.”
“I was browsing on Facebook
and I seen the way they was
dressing and it was just like way
different,” Just Brittany said. “The
way she dressed is like what I had
in mind for myself.”
Tezeno did the styling for Just
Brittany and the E’blaja girls, who
appeared in the music video as
participants in an over-the-top
slumber party.
“Everything looked like it was
well put together,” Just Brittany

said. “I’ve never seen a whole
team of people who are dressed
so well.”
Tezeno said the night of the
shoot — for all its fun — was also
a lot of hard work and kept the
girls on set until early the next
day.
“It was very tiresome,” Tezeno
said. “It got real real. We got
hungry.”
But Tezeno’s work paid off, and
after the video she was named
Just Brittany’s personal stylist.
She now creates looks for the
recording artist for everything
from videos to performances
to a recent appearance at Bun
B’s birthday party at South by
Southwest.
For a recent public appear-
ance, she put Just Brittany in a
pair of shorts from IZ Resale in
Nederland.
“The first outfit I tried on, I was
like, ‘Oh my God, I like this,’” Just
Brittany said. “She’s gonna be my
stylist from now on.”
The recording artist said that
these days, everywhere she goes,
she’s constantly complimented
on her outfits.
“I just think now my clothes
speak for me before I walk in
the room,” she said. And she has
Tezeno to thank for that.
“Who knew that I would be
styling a celebrity in just three
months?” Tezeno said. “If you put
your mind to it, you can do it.”
On April 1, Tezeno will style
Just Brittany for her show at the
Ticket on College Street. You can
bet the whole E’blaja crew will
also be on hand, styled to the
nines as well.

On April 21, the E’blaja
Fashion Coalition will be part of
the Lamar FMA fashion show
— themed Trapped in Time —
which features looks from the
’60s and ’70s.
And the group is going for
round two in the video world:
Just Brittany has asked them to
appear in the music video for her
next single, “Color.”
The coalition might be starting
to pop up all over YouTube, but
don’t expect to see any video girl
stereotypes.
“We’ve got high heels and high
standards,” Fowler said.
The “Color” video shoot is
planned to take place at a bo-
tanical garden in the beginning
of April.

And at their April 21 show,
E’blaja will unveil some new
members. Teeny, tiny new mem-

Lil E’blaja will be a fashion co-
alition for kids. Its goal is to help
children find their own personal
style. In the future, the mini fash-
ionistas will walk with E’blaja at
some of their events.
“The kids are the future,”
Tezeno said.
And E’blaja’s future is looking
pretty bright, too, filled with bold
patterns, plenty of sequins and
heels as high as their expecta-
tions.
“Just be on the lookout,”
Tezeno said.

$10.99 and the jumbo gumbo (my
description, not theirs) is $8.99.

who confessed to patronizing Rich-
ard’s almost every day when it was

is definitely the place to have one.

come as a surprise to customers
who knew Richard’s back on Col-
lege, but there now is a nightclub
inside!
A Touch of Class Club is open
from 8 p.m. to midnight Thursday
and is open even later Friday and
Saturday. Sundays it’s open 6 p.m.
to midnight. Expect to pay a cover
of $5 before 11 p.m., $10 after.
Ladies night is Thursday with a
cover of $3.
I recommend getting there later
rather than earlier as this place
starts moving around 11.
Mixed drinks are available, along
with a fab dance floor, live DJ and a
smoking patio.
And you’ll find the freshest fried
bar food in town, of course. There
is no microwave in this establish-
ment, y’all.
Atmosphere: From the outside,
this is one of those places you
probably wouldn’t take a second
glance at when driving by.
Step in the doors and it is com-
pletely down-to-earth and comfort-
able.
For lunch you will find folks in
scrubs, business suits and Nomex.
Everyone is here because they
want to eat good food.
The place is large while still
retaining the at-home feel, and the
eclectic furnishings give it a lot of
character.
At night, dress to impress.
Find the restrooms: In the very
back to the left, then on the right.
They are the one-person kind,
but us ladies can move in and out
faster thanks to the full-length mir-
ror right outside the door. No need
to be in the bathroom to touch up
your makeup.
Extras and specials: Well, I
think it’s pretty special that there’s
a nightclub inside a soul food res-
taurant in Beaumont.
Just sayin’.
The verdict: This is called soul
food — not health food — for a
reason.
If you want to feel touched by an
angel, come get some down-home
Southern cooking in an environ-
ment that makes you feel like
you’re at grandma’s.
And then come back later to get
your dance on.

ost great stories
have at their
crux something
made of gold. A
touch of gold, an egg of gold
or a fleece of gold make
dream worlds go round.
Or end them.
In this tale, a girl moves south,
far away from loved ones and ev-
erything familiar. This new land
was a mix of two distinct cultures,
both proud and flavorful. There
were new traditions she learned
to love and celebrate, making
them part of her own.
Once in the new land, she
experienced many new things,
many of them barbecued, some
of them fried. She attended thou-
sands of festivals and made new
acquaintances but never found
the right person who could point
her toward the perfect home-
made morning treat.
True, she saw the merit in
doughnuts (and an occasional
doughnut burger). She acknowl-
edged the savory perfection of
kolaches and the appearance of
crawfish in morning meals. But
there was something missing.
The light and fluffy, flaky side of
breakfast proved elusive.
There was surely a golden
croissant to be had somewhere in
the Golden Triangle. But where
could such a fine French treat be
found?
There were French Cajuns run-
ning amok, but never the perfect
croissant. The girl knew if she

roadside trucks and all manner

Six hundred and 61 days into
her exploration of this new land,
she found it.
A friend made an offhand
comment about a restaurant
baking its own croissants. Her
ears perked up. Could it be? The
girl, by polite eavesdropping,
discovered The Golden Croissant
in Nederland. She immediately

hopped into her carriage and
drove as fast as was legal to Mid-
County.
Walking into the bakery was
like a dream. There was also a
drive-thru, but she opted for full
immersion to make sure this
wasn’t a mirage.
And it wasn’t.
The Golden Croissant has
been in Southeast Texas for
about 30 years and offered a
friendly smile when she entered.
For breakfast, the bakery serves
croissants, eclairs, muffins and a
sweet after your meal, don’t think
that the Golden Croissant limits
itself to breakfast. Fresh-baked
cookies, brownies, pastries and
more line the glass shelves in
the restaurant. You can order
fresh-baked King Cakes or wed-
ding cakes of figurine bread in
the shapes of logos, lobsters or
clowns.
The decor in the restaurant
was festive — French Quarter
meets French town square. It was
comforting to the girl to know
that she could come back to the
restaurant any time from 6 a.m.
to 6 p.m.
The girl now is content, satis-
fied that her days of croissant-
seeking are at an end.
Now all she seeks is the
perfect sandwich.

ometimes we are too busy to stop and
indulge in the beauty that surrounds
us, so from time to time we need a
reminder to slow down and dress up.

The lovely mint color sends you to a spring

Will anyone pay for
redone Radiohead?

Ah, the good old days, when
sonic philistines debated the mer-
its of vinyl versus compact discs.
Radiohead might well spark a
debate over FLAC versus AAC that
could bring a misty eye to audio
historians. Radiohead’s new re-
lease Tuesday wasn’t about alpha-
bet soup. Rather, the band is offer-
ing fans, via a London company
called 7Digital, their first chance
to download its latest album, “The
King of Limbs,” in higher-quality
digital formats.
FLAC stands for free lossless
audio codec and, at 24 bits, is said
to feature the same audio fidelity
in which bands record their songs.
In the mastering process, when
recordings are made ready for
copying on to CDs, the accuracy
is taken down a notch, to 16 bits, a
process that has annoyed record-
ing engineers and bands because
some of the nuances of their
music can sometimes be lost.
But the losses are minimal
when compared to what hap-
pens to music files when they are
compressed into downloadable
formats such as MP3 and AAC.
These formats were spawned
in the 1990s to allow listeners
to squeeze more songs onto
devices such as the iPod, which
debuted in 2001 with a whopping
5 gigabytes of memory. That was
enough to hold “1,000 songs in
your pocket,” according to Apple
honcho Steve Jobs, but only if they
were aggressively compressed.
That sales pitch, along with the
introduction earlier in 2001 of the
iTunes music store, led to a mass
migration from high-fidelity audio
and toward the convenience of
lo-fi digital songs.
A decade later, Radiohead is
swimming in the other direc-
tion — back toward high-fidelity
releases. Working with digital mu-
sic company 7Digital, the British
band plans to sell a high-quality
download of its album for $11.99
(the version also comes bundled
with a CD-quality copy and an
AAC compressed copy).

is the mass-market format of the
future,” Drury said. “Certainly,
people who spend significant
sums on hi-fi equipment have
been vocal about the poor quality many as 40 percent of consumers
of MP3s. But that’s been quite
niche.”

Rockin’ out at The Gig

L
ast Thursday at The Gig on Crockett Street, a solid
lineup of indie bands — both local and visiting —
brought something a little different than The Gig’s
usual lineup.
Local indie rock band Hello Chief gave a command
performance as usual and reminded us how lucky we
are to get to hear the undulating
soundscape they fill the room
with.
They were followed by Fresh
Millions, a high-energy Austin in-
die electronic/pop outfit that was
recently named best new band by
the Austin Chronicle.
Local rockers We Were Wolves
closed out the show with their
seriously infectious brand
of Southern rock ’n’ roll. Ev-
ery time we see these guys,
their sound just gets better
and better.

String Band took the
stage at the Logon Cafe last Friday
night and played hours of bluegrass,
gypsy and country songs to a packed
house.
Their energy and enthusiasm —
and awesome outfits and facial hair,
I might add — was immediately evi-
dent, but this four-piece band’s real
strength lies in their precision. These
guys could play so hard and fast, it’s a
wonder their fiddle didn’t catch fire.
