Global Warming - Affecting INDIA !!!

• The Himalayan glaciers have started to melt and the average rate of
retreat is almost twice (34 metres) per year as compared to the 1971
levels of 19 metres..

• The melting glaciers will cause temperatures and sea-levels to rise

and there will be a cascading effect on the crops and the monsoons.
Occurrence of frequent cyclones along the coastal areas and affect
the annual monsoon rain, which is crucial for India's farm-dependent
economy.

• Bengal will suffer – whole islands are expected to vanish! In fact two

have already gone under – two islands in the Sunderbans, an area
which India shares with Bangladesh.
• Orissa is another state which is already being hit hard by global warming.
Whole villages in the coastal regions are disappearing.

• December 8, 2008 - Global warming could submerge three of India's biggest

cities beneath the sea by 2020 unless the crisis was brought under control,
an Indian scientist warned yesterday.

• "If the warming continues, there will be about half to one metre increase in
sea level by 2020 and cities like Bombay, Calcutta and Madras will be
completely submerged," said Rajiv Nigam, a scientist with the Geological
Oceanography Division in the western Indian state..

• Only 30% of the households use Gas as a fuel, 50% of India uses Firewood
and rest 20% uses other means. At this rate the forests of India are going to
disappear
Current Affairs …. On Global Warming
• MADURAI 18th March – 20th March: A ‘Conference against warming the globe (Tamil
Nadu) 2011', featuring delegates from various states and countries, was held by a
group of non-governmental organizations, trade unions and other ‘socially concerned'
people. Conference head Y. David said that drastic changes in climate were occurring
across the world. Snow was melting faster off the mountains and ice off glaciers,
which was increasing the sea levels. These could submerge the coastal areas, he
said adding that agricultural productivity had also begun to decline.

• New Delhi 5 April 2011: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh attends the Copenhagen
Climate Summit. The conference, attended by at least 65 world leaders, intends to
produce a new global climate change treaty on limiting emissions of greenhouse
gases. India has announced that it would consider an emission intensity cut of 20 to
25 percent by 2020, but would not be forced into accepting unilateral cuts decided by
developed countries.
Global Warming - Affecting Amchen Goa??
• Goa Governor S.S. Siddhu warned that the ill-effects of
global warming were fast knocking at the state's doors and
eroding its beaches.

• N P S Varde, director and member secretary of Goa Energy

Development Agency, said, "Our environmental problems are
caused due to the use of energy, pollution in kitchens from
chullahs, cutting of forests for timber and smoke emissions
from transport vehicles."

• "If India's temperature rises by 2 degrees Celsius, there will

be millions of environmental refugees," Emmanuel D'Silva,
environmental scientist, said, "And it is important to accept
that we are part of the problem" instead of thinking it is
happening due to somebody else's fault".
Solutions:

• Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent

light bulb - CFLs use 60% less energy than a regular bulb.

• Do not leave appliances on standby - Use the "on/off" function on the

machine itself. A TV set that's switched on for 3 hours a day and in standby
mode during the remaining 21 hours uses about 40% of its energy in
standby mode.

• Cover your pots while cooking - Doing so can save a lot of the energy
needed for preparing the dish. Even better are pressure cookers and
steamers: they can save around 70%.

• Choose products that come with little packaging and buy refills when
you can. - You will also cut down on waste production and energy use..

• Drive carefully and do not waste fuel

• When it is time for a new car, choose a more fuel efficient vehicle
Reuse your shopping bag
When shopping, it saves energy and waste to use a reusable bag instead
of accepting a disposable one in each shop. Waste not only discharges
CO2 and methane into the atmosphere, it can also pollute the air,
groundwater and soil.

Clean or replace filters on your furnace and air conditioner

Cleaning a dirty air filter can save 350 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Plant a tree
A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. Shade
provided by trees can also reduce your air conditioning bill by 10 to 15%

Social Awareness
We see now a days the concern for Global Warming is wide. Schools,
Colleges and even Organization are conducting Eco Friendly Campaigns.
The World Environment day is celebrated on June 5 with great
enthusiasm all over.
PANAJI: Speaking on the theme "Taking
responsibility for global warming" at Go! Green Goa
– Environmentalists have suggested

• Planting of more trees

• Use of vermiculture to reduce waste at source
• Tapping of renewable energy to offset carbon footprints
• Organic waste in cities and urban areas should be
recycled
• Urged people to switch from incandescent bulbs to the
energy-saving fluorescent ones.
