Tools and Crew Aids
Although the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was,
designed and built with a number of handholds and
other accessones to help spacewaiking astronauts,
seme the observatory, the crew of STS-61 will fake
more than 150 other tools and crew axis with them
‘when they biastott on therr planned 11-day servicing
mussion in December 1993.
‘The tools and crew aids, known as Soace Supper
Equipment (SSE) hardware, range from a simple bag
‘for carying some of the smaller tools to sophisticaled,
‘battery-operated power tools. They wil be used by
the EVA crew members wri will make at least five
sSspacewalks to camry out the challenging lask of
‘servicing the spacecraft
Crew aids are detmed as those fixed-in-place or
onable equipment tems, not nand tools, used to
‘assist Crew members in accomplishing servicng
mission tasks. SSE equipment crew aids permit the
crew members to maneuver safely or to restrain
themselves, transter Orbital Replacement Units
(OAUs) and other portable items, protect equipment
and crew dunng changeout activites and temporarily
stow oF tether equipment during Extra Vehicular
Activities (EVAs}. Examples of crew aids are: hand-
rails, handholds. translation devices, transfer equip-
ment, protective covers, tethenng devices, grapple
fortures. foot restraint sockets and stowage and
athing fixtures,
Tools are hand operated oF manipulated devices
‘mat allow the EVA astronauts to increasa the att
ciency of performing mtncate, labor intensive tasks.
Tools allow the operaton of HST and SSE interfaces
to permit access to equipment, removal and replace-
‘ment of ORUs and the worksite restraint of crew
‘members, tools and hardware using platforms, cad-
des or equipment tethers, Tools also provide for
temporary storage of hardware stems, supplemental
lughting and manual operation of spacecraft and
payload appendages and mechanisms during EVAs,
‘The tools and crew ards will be stowed on the Solar
Array Carmer (SAC), ORU Came: (RUC), Flight
‘Support System {FSS), HST Too! Box, Sidewall-
‘mounted adapter plates. Provisions Stowage Assemn-
bly (PSA), an Adaptive Payload Carrier (APC), md-
deck lockers, alt ight deck and in the airlocx. The
tools and crew aids are provided by both the Johason
‘Space Center, Houston, Tex., and the Goddard
‘Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md.
‘Tools and crew aids considered “general” with a
‘wide variety of uses an the planned 11-day. fwe-EVA
‘mission include the Power Raichel Tool (PRT), Mult
setting Torque Limiter (MTL), adjustable extension
‘wath 7/16" sockets, ingress aids. portable work light
receplacte and a locking connector tool. More specific
“general” items are a low gain antenna (LGA) cover,
‘umbilical connector covers. a flight support system
(FSS) berthing and postioning system {BAPS) suppon
ost and a mutt-layer insulation (ML repair ki.
To be usad to changeout the Wide Field/Planetary
Camera (WE/PC) will be the WF/PC handholds, WE!
PC guide studs, quick-release zip nuts, WF/PC pick-
off miror cover, forward fixture, aft fixture and the HST
radial bay cover.
For ine High Speed Photometer (HSP) replacement
with the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axtal
Replacement (COSTAR), tools and aids to be used
willbe the COSTAR contamination cover, a COSTAR.
handling aid, @ HSP handing ak, forward fieure, at
toute and an axial science instrumert protective
enclosure (SIPE) satety bar.
For the solar array replacement, ihe astronauts will
Use articulating foot restrains (AFAs), solar array
amary drive mechanism handles, solar array tempo-
rary stowage brackets (TSBs). solar array transfer
andes, solar array jettison handle, solar aay spines,
portable fight releasable grapple fixture (PFRGF) and
a Marmon clamp.
For the changeout of the gyro rate sensor units, the
crew members wil use a portable foot restraint (PER)
socket convener (90-degree), fixed head star tracker
(FHST) light shade covers and a FHST deta plate
cover.
‘The Goddard-provided power ratchet tool (PRT) is
powered by a 26-voll battery. Made of titanium and‘aluminum. the tool will be used for tasks requiring
controlled torque, speed or tums and can be used
‘where night-angled access is required. It wll provide
25 foot pounds of pressure in the motorized made and
75 foot pounds of pressure in the manual mode and
thas a speed of 10 0 30 RPMs. The power ratchet too!
wrench is approximately 17 inches long. A spare PRT
willbe carried on the mission, as will spares for all
‘other tools to be used by the astronauts.
‘The seven crew members on the firs! Hubble Space
Telescope servicing mission (STS-61} are Dick Covey.
‘commander; Ken Bowersox. pilot: Story Musgrave,
payload commander: Claude Nicollier, ESA mission
‘specialist; and Tom Akers, Kathy Thomton and Jett
Hoffman, mission specialists,
‘The mission w scheduled for litot from tne
Kennedy Soace Center. The space shutile Endeavour
will be the orbiter for the missin.
