Endemic goitre, cretinism and other iodine deficiency disorders can be prevented by the administration of iodine. The use of iodized salt is not always practicable in developing countries, and iodine deficiency disorders can be a serious problem, particularly in isolated communities where people are too poor to afford an adequate diet This book gives advice and guidance on the organisation of iodine supplementation programmes. It deals with carrying out goitre surveys, recording the data, assessing the results, implementing a programme and monitoring and evaluating its success. Intended for health workers and planners in developing countries, this book will prove a valuable practical guide to dealing with iodine deficiency disorders at community level.
