The Peak District Rural Deprivation Forum set up a Farming Working Group in the autumn of 2000 to investigate the effects of decreasing incomes on Peak District hill farmers and their families, and to find realistic solutions. A research project was drawn up that consisted of two main parts. The first was to establish the views of farmers themselves through Participatory Appraisal and interviews for 12 case studies. The second was to look at official data and literature. Taking account of the two parts of the research, the Working Group then looked at long-term structural policies and short term measures necessary to bring about change.
