Easter is the most important Christian festival. It commemorates the resurrection of Christ
on the third day after his death and, with it, new life and hope. As with many Christian
celebrations, it has its roots in pagan traditions. The name may come from the Norse word
for spring, Eostur, or it may come from the name of the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring
and fertility, Eostre.
Many of the symbols we associate with Easter are pre-Christian in origin. This is the case
of the egg which represents new life and re-birth. In China, Rome and Greece, eggs were
given as springtime gifts.
According to an old German story, a poor woman hid some decorated eggs in her garden
for her children to find. When the children were looking for the eggs, a hare hopped past.
The children thought the hare had left the eggs. When the custom of hunting for eggs
reached America, the hare became a rabbit as there were more rabbits than hares.
• chocolate eggs or one or more copies of Worksheet 1 (if you have a colour printer)
or Worksheet 2 (which you can photocopy onto coloured paper or card or colour in)
• one copy of Worksheet 3 for each child, preferably on card (optional)
• one copy of Worksheet 4, 5 and 6 (preferably on card) for the whole class (see
optional extension activity)
Instructions:
1. Before the class, hide the eggs inside or outside the classroom. Note, if you are
using the Worksheets instead of chocolate eggs, you will need to colour the eggs
(for Worksheet 2) and cut them out.
2. Explain the origins of Easter eggs and tell the children about Easter egg hunts.
3. Optionally, as the eggs are often collected in baskets, give the children Worksheet
3 to make their own baskets, either in class or at home (in which case you will
have to give them the Worksheet in advance).
5. Count how many eggs each child has. Ask them what colours
they have, to tell you where they found the eggs…

Easter Corner Lower Primary
Use Worksheets 4, 5 and 6 to prepare a task-related Easter egg hunt. When the children
have found the eggs, they must answer the questions/carry out the tasks written on their
eggs. You may like to put the children in groups for this activity and allocate points for
correct answers/tasks done successfully.
