Subject: Design Criteria for Civil & Structural work for Punjab Rural Water supply &

Sanitation Project:

Introduction: As per contract agreement consultants are required to submit standard design
in respect of civil and structural components, which are likely to come in water supply and
sewerage scheme. Consultants have come across different documents, World Bank guidelines
and manuals that were made available by the department. After study all the aforesaid
materials it is our view that civil and structural components for water supply and sewerage
schemes already executed by the department conform to the standard IS specifications in
respect of material and construction but specific guideline in respect of design is not
available. Therefore, consultants have tried to prepare the design guideline as per detail under
section A, B, C & D. These guidelines are strongly recommended for compliance.

A. Structural Analysis:

I.Limit State Method (See 5 of IS 456:2000)

II. Working Stress Method (Appendix B of IS 456:2000) When Limit State is not
found convenient

III. Structural frame Analysis shall be done using software Staad Pro-2006

B. Design of ordinary Civil Structures:

I. Loads & Forces:

• D. L. – Based on Dead Weight of Structures

• L. L. – As per IS: 875
• W. L./ Earthquake Forces – As per IS: 875/ 1893
• Equipment Load – As actual; This forces as required as per clause
19.6 of IS 456:2000
II. Load Combination:

• As per IS 875 (part 5)-latest

III. Stability of the structure:

• Shall be as per clause 20 of IS 456:2000

IV. Fire Resistance:

1

• High strength deformed steel bars conforming to IS 1786

VII. Cement:

• 43 grade ordinary Portland cement conforming to IS 8112

• Portland slag cement conforming to IS 455

C. Design of Water Retaining Structures:

I. Loads & Forces:

• L. – Based on Dead Weight of Structures
• L. L. – As per IS: 875
• W. L./ Earthquake Forces – As per IS: 875/ 1893
• Equipment Load – As actual; This forces as required as per clause
19.6 of IS 456:2000
• IS 3370 part I for general guidelines

II. Load Combination:

• As per IS 875 (part 5)-latest

III. Stability of the structure:

• Shall be as per clause 20 of IS 456:2000

IV. Fire Resistance:

• Shall be as per clause 21 of IS 456:2000

V. Concrete:

• Environmental Exposure condition –Severe (cl. 8.2.2.1)

• Minimum grade of R. C. Concrete – M-25

• Minimum grade of Plain Cement Concrete – M-7.5

• Minimum grade of R C Concrete for water retaining or in contact

with water – M30

VI. Reinforcement Steel:

Note:

1. Reservoir supporting frame and its foundation for OHSR shall be analysed
using software Staad Pro 2006

2. Underground/Overhead Reservoir shall be analysed by Working State

Method. Foundation for Overhead supporting columns shall be designed by
limit state method after analysis by software Staad pro 2006.

3. For foundation design of civil structures soil investigation report specifically

in respect of bearing capacity shall be referred.

4. All water retaining structure shall be designed under no crack condition and
for which general guidelines as specified in IS 3370 shall be followed.

5. All civil foundation for OHSR shall be designed as annular raft in

consideration of safe bearing capacity of 8.75 ton/m2 unless otherwise
mentioned.

6. All civil foundations for OHSR shall have pile foundation where soil bearing
capacity is found less than 5 ton/m2 . Size of pile cap, type of pile and sizes
shall be as per soil report and village specific.

7. While analysing the OHSR structure it is observed that forces due to

earthquake (falling under zone IV) is severe than the wind forces. Therefore
the analysis should be carried out considering earthquake force for zone IV as
stipulated in IS 1893.

8. Design of dome type OHSR having capacity 25 cum to 300 cum has been
done keeping height of water fixed .Similarly design of intze type OHSR
having capacity 300 cum to 400 cum has been done keeping height of water
fixed. Design of dome type OHSR having capacity 250 cum to 300 cum has
been done keeping diameter of tank fixed and providing annular ring type
foundation.Similarly design of intze type OHSR having capacity 300 cum to
400 cum has been done keeping diameter of tank fixed and providing full raft
foundation. Full Raft foundation of dome type OHSR having capacity 250
cum to 300 cum(Height fixed) has been designed as an alternate to annular
ring type.

9. The RCC structures which are in contact with water or water vapour shall be
designed as water retaining structures in reference to IS 3370.

10. Design of pile foundation shall be as per soil report and conform to general
guidelines of IS: 2911-1979(reaffirmed 1997)

D. Design of Steel Structures:

1. Loads
a) Dead Load – IS 875 (part 1)
