Academic Bankruptcy and Forgiveness
University Policy
 Academic bankruptcy 
allowsstudents who are returning tocollege after remaining out for anextended period to void one ormore entire semesters of previouscollege work. Students consideringthis option are strongly encouragedto consult with their academicadvisor for guidance.If the student meets the followingcriteria and if the appropriatecommittee (located within thestudent’s enrollment unit) findsthere are extenuatingcircumstances that warrant suchaction, the committee may rule thestudent eligible to declareacademic bankruptcy. To beeligible, the student:
must not have attended anycollege or university during aperiod of two calendar yearsimmediately preceding thisreadmission; and
must state in writing theintention to declare bankruptcy,specifically designating theterm or consecutive sequenceof terms to which thebankruptcy process is to apply. The student must attain at least a2.5 quality point standing (3.0quality point standing or higher inthe College of Business and 2.8Dental Hygiene and Nursingprograms) in all degree applicablecourses while attempting the first12 hours after readmission. (Allcourses taken during the term inwhich the twelfth-hour minimum isattained will be considered indetermining eligibility forbankruptcy.) After these 12 hourshave been attempted, the studentmust petition the appropriatecommittee for academicbankruptcy, designating the termor consecutive sequence of termsto which the bankruptcy process isto apply. The voided grades and credit hourswill not be considered for degreerequirements or quality-pointcomputations, but will remain onthe student’s transcript. Academicactions, such as probation ordismissal, recorded at the end of the voided terms, will also remain.No student may declarebankruptcy more than once.Bankrupt semesters will not applytoward enrollment semesters whendetermining catalog year. Nocourse taken during a bankruptedsemester can be used to satisfy arequirement.Students are advised that whilebankrupted course grades areremoved from the calculation, thecourse work does remain a part of their permanent record and thatthe bankrupted work may beconsidered for financial aidpurposes, NCAA purposes, and maybe evaluated if applying for honorsor graduate study. No personusing these bankruptcy proceduresshall be eligible to participate inany intercollegiate competitionuntil the specified grades andcourses have been declared void.Additionally, students must beaware that academic bankruptcy isan internal policy. The University of Louisville cannot guarantee howthe work will be viewed by anotheruniversity should the student

Note that grades earned insemesters for which academicbankruptcy has been approved arecounted in the student’s expandedgrade point average to determineeligibility for graduation withhonors.
College of Education andHuman Development
 The College of Education andHuman Development also offersacademic forgiveness.
 Academicforgiveness
allows currentlyenrolled students to void onesemester of University of Louisvillecoursework. No student maypetition for both academicforgiveness and academicbankruptcy.If the student meets the followingcriteria and if the College of Education and HumanDevelopment Standards andAdmissions Committee believethere are extenuatingcircumstances that warrant suchaction, the committee may rule thestudent eligible to declareacademic forgiveness. To beeligible to apply for academicforgiveness the student:
must be currently enrolled inthe College of Education andHuman Development; and
must submit a petition to theCollege of Education andHuman Development Standardsand Admissions Committeerequesting academicforgiveness, specificallydesignating the term to whichacademic forgiveness is toapply. The voided grades and credit hourswill not be considered for degreerequirements or quality-pointcomputations but will remain onthe student’s transcript. Academicactions such as probation ordismissal, recorded at the end of the voided terms, will also remain.No student may declare academicforgiveness more than once.Forgiven semesters will not applytoward enrollment semesters whendetermining catalog years.
 
Kent School of Social Work 
 The Kent School of Social WorkBSW program also offers academicforgiveness.
 Academic forgiveness
allows currently enrolled studentsto void one semester of Universityof Louisville coursework.If the student meets the followingcriteria and if the Kent School BSWAdmissions and StandardsCommittee believe there areextenuating circumstances whichwarrant such action, the committeemay rule the student eligible todeclare academic forgiveness. Tobe eligible to apply for academicforgiveness, the student:
Must be currently enrolled inthe Kent School BSWProgram; AND
Must submit a petition to theKent School BSW Admissionsand Standards Committeerequesting academicforgiveness, specificallydesignating the term towhich academic forgivenessis to apply. The voided grades and credit
