FROMTHEWINGLOHAILANDFAREWELL!Itseemsjustaveryshorttimeago(twoyears)whenLt.ColonelJohnG.Hanks,USAF,joinedusasFloridaWingLiaisonOfficer.HisfirstCivilAirPatrolactivitywastheannualWingSARtestwhichwasheldatMerrittIslandAirport.HelearnedratherquicklythatdutywithCAPwasdifferentthananypastexperienceswhichhehadencounteredintheUnitedStatesAirForce.ServingasAirForceAdvisortotheWingCommanderandLiaisonOfficerforallofFlorida'smembershipeachdaywasanewandchallengingexperienceforhim.Heaccomp-lishedmanythingsduringhistenure,includingschedulingofencampmentsandotheractivitiesatmilitaryinstallationsthroughoutthestate,administeringtheSPAATZexaminationprogram,airliftcoordination,critiquingFloridaWingsemer-gencyservicescapabilityandestablishingreserveassistanceteamsforSARtestevaluations,liaisonvisitstoallofourgroupsandmanyofoursquadrons,promotingaerospaceeducationworkshopsandaerospacewithintheschools,andbeingabletohelpuswhenhewasneeded.LTCHanksisretiringonSeptember30,1979fromactiveduty.Wewillmisshimandareextremelyappreciativeofallhiseffortsonourbehalf.HeIll!..dhis

themonthofJulywhileIwascrewingonthe"SandDollar",wereceivedacallfromourRadioWatchOfficerconcerningadisabledboatwithsixpeopleaboard.WewereintheentranceofAlligatorCreekcheckingoutthenewmarkersatthetime.Wegotunderwayforthegivenlocationbutdidnotspotthedisabledboat-20feetwithnosuperstructure.CivilAirPatrolwasairborneatthetimeandcircledthevesselwhichmadeiteasytochangecourseandheaddirectlyforit.Locationwasonemileoffthewestshoreandnotmid-harborasreported.
