Flux present very personal takes on LGBT
issues through painting, photography,
sculpture and video.
8PM: Screening of PRIDE 2010 DVD
(29 mins, Khmer, English subtitles) opens
this year’s PRIDE FILM FESTIVAL, followed
by shorts from Q-Film Festival/Indonesia:
GINCU by A. Christina/G. M. Sutawikara (2
mins, Singapore, 2009); THE CLOWN AND
THE BRIDE by B. Christian (27 mins,
Indonesia, 2009); HYPOCRITE by D.
Setiawan (Indonesia/Australia, 2010, 14
mins) English subtitles. Also screening GO
GO REJECT, which won multiple Best Short
Film Awards.
WEDNESDAY, 11/05
“I CAN BE WHO I AM”:
CAMBODIAN LADYBOYS MEET
“MADAME X”
6.30PM: Khmer filmmaker Choun
Sarin presents his short doc I CAN BE
WHO I AM (2010, 26 mins, Khmer with
English subtitles) about two “ladyboys”.
7.15PM: Superhero comedy MADAME X
(2010, 100 mins, Bahasa/English subtitles)
by Indonesian L. Kuswandi was one of the
highlights at this year’s Hong Kong Film
Festival. A transgender hairdresser
blossoms into a masked crusader who
battles homophobia.
9.15PM: DESERT HEARTS (1985, 91 mins,
English, French subtitles) was one of the
first films made by a lesbian for a lesbian
audience. In 1950s Nevada Vivian Bell finds
herself increasingly drawn to a self-assured
lesbian, and the ranch owner's daughter.
THURSDAY, 12/05
“DANGEROUS LIVING” & “KIDS ARE
ALRIGHT” WITH JULIANNE MOORE
6.30PM. The Human Rights Watch
documentary DANGEROUS LIVING –
COMING OUT IN THE DEVELOPING
WORLD (2003, 60 mins, Khmer language,
English subtitles) covers the struggle of
LGBT people for basic human rights in Asia,
Africa and Latin America. In some countries,
“getting caught” can even incur the death
penalty.
8.30PM: Lisa Cholodenko’s THE KIDS ARE
ALRIGHT (2010, 106 mins) is the winner of
the “Teddy Award for Best Feature Film” at
Berlin International Film Festival 2010. The
movie with Julianne Moore & Annette
Bening combines comedic surprise with
poignant emotional truth in a funny and
vibrant portrait of a modern family.
FRIDAY, 13/05
SOPHAT, NASEAR, THREE SWEDISH
LESBIANS AND “TWELVE”
6.30PM. SOPHAT AND NASEAR (10
mins, Khmer, English subtitles) is a sweet
film about gay man Sophat, his transgender
partner Nasear and their reflections on life
in Cambodia.
7PM: The documentary DON’T YOU
WORRY (2003, 74 mins, Khmer, English
subtitles) by Swedish director C. Neant-Falk
introduces you to 3 young lesbians and their
struggles for a “coming-out”.
8.30PM: Q-Film Fest brings you TWELVE
(2008, 88 mins, Tagalog, English subtitles),
the directorial debut of award-winning
Philippine screenwriter Senedy H. Que. He
tells a disturbing story of love, lust, and loss
of innocence. A 12 year-old boy and a
lonely gardener break moral bounds.
SATURDAY, 14/05
SCREENING OF “BOYFRIEND” AND
“QUEER CHINA, COMRADE CHINA”
6.30PM: BOYFRIEND is the new short
film by Cambodian collective 4K (19 mins,
Khmer, English subtitles). It tells the story of
a confusing relationship. Filmmakers & cast
will be in attendance.
7.15PM: China's most prolific queer
filmmaker Cui Zi’en presents a
comprehensive account of the queer
movement in modern China with QUEER
CHINA, ‘COMRADE’ CHINA (2009, 60
minutes, English subtitles).
8.30PM: HOOTERS (93 mins, 2010,
English with English subtitles) by American
Anna M. Albelo is a humerous behind-the-
scenes doc film. A collective very loosely
bound by sexuality and ideas of gender tries
to make a seminal lesbian film in three
weeks.
SUNDAY, 15/05
PRIDE COMEDIES: “IRON LADIES” &
”YOU SHOULD MEET MY SON”
6.30PM: The comedy IRON LADIES
(2000, 104 mins, Khmer, English subtitles)
by Yongyoot Thongkongtoon tells the true
story of a Thai male volleyball team that
competes in the national championships in
1996 with a team consisting mostly of gays,
transvestites and transsexuals. Broad,
sentimental, but ultimately irresistible!
8.30PM: YOU SHOULD MEET MY SON
(2010, 88 mins, English, English subtitles) is
director and screenwriter Keith Hartman’s
feature film debut. When conservative
Southern mother Mae learns that her only
son is gay, she decides that he is not to go
through life alone and starts looking for the
ideal husband for him.
MONDAY, 16/05
THE THIRD SEX: “MY BUDDY CLAUDIA”
& “INSECTS IN THE BACKYARD”
7PM: Dacio Pinheiro profiles the remarkable
life and career of Claudia Wonder, one of
Brazil's leading transsexual celebrities, in
the fast-paced documentary MY BUDDY
CLAUDIA. Wonder rose to stardom in a
series of offbeat movies and became an
outspoken activist for gay and
transgendered rights in the 1980s.
8.30PM The Thai drama INSECTS IN THE
BACKYARD is about a transvestite father,
whose children enter the sex trade.
Tanwarin Sukkhapisit’s controversial piece
is banned in Thailand. 'Most people believe
that Thai society is open about gays and
katoeys”, she says. “We're not arrested on
the streets. Our rights aren't limited, and we
can live fairly happily. But if you ask me if
katoeys are accepted as part of the
mainstream 'we' of society, I don't think so.
We're still 'the others', the insects in the
backyard.” The filmmaker will be present at
the screening and hold a Q&A.
TUESDAY, 17/05
PRIDE 2010 FINALE: “COURAGE
UNFOLDS” AND LGBT PANEL
7.30PM COURAGE UNFOLDS (30
mins, Khmer, English subtitles). The film
calls for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
Transgender (LGBT) people to be
protected, respected, and accepted by
promoting the implementation of the
Yogyakarta Principles. It highlights issues
faced by LGBT people in Asia and uses this
lens to show why the Yogyakarta Principles
is not only relevant but also an important
tool for activists to strengthen advocacy for
the application of international human rights
law to the lives LGBT people.
8PM: Panel discussion by LGBT activists,
MSM NGO and Human Rights NGO
representatives discussing the LGBT
situation in Cambodia.
