A guide to cleansing crystals

It is important to cleanse a crystal when you receive it. Crystals naturally absorb energy and
cleansing it removes energy it has picked up along the way before reaching you. It is
important to also cleanse your crystals after you have been working energetically with them,
such as in healing work or meditation, as they absorb the persons energy you have been
healing and it can be passed on if you don’t clean it out of the crystals.

When to cleanse

You will know when a crystal you have been working with needs to be cleansed. Quartz
crystals may become cloudier, where they were bright and clear before, other crystals will
lose their lustre. Some crystals physically feel denser or heavier, like they are carrying a
burden or extra load.

The crystals you wear or have around the house will need cleansing regularly, depending on
how much you wear them or how much action is going on in the house.

Also, you will need to cleanse your quartz crystal when you want to reprogramme it to do
something else.

Methods for cleansing crystals

To cleanse your crystal you use your energy to work directly with the crystals’. This is done
through your intention – a focused mind. While holding your crystal in your hands, visualise
it immersed in white light, clearing it of any unwanted energies and re-energising it. Hold it
for several minutes or as long as you feel inclined. Ask “that all the energies within the
crystal are transformed into divine light and love, and that it is clear and activated to its full
potential”.

Most crystals love running water. Hold your crystal under the tap and allow cold water to
flow over it. As you do so, visualise all negative energies dissolving and washing away,
transforming into positive healing energy

Visualise a flow of clear, pure mountain water going through the crystal, washing away all
impurities and seeing them transformed into positive healing energy.

Rinse or bathe your crystals in rain-water, water from a spring, a stream, the beach, a river or
sacred source, even in a waterfall (make sure you hold on to them or they can get swept
away). Dry them naturally in gentle sunlight.

Morning sunlight gently cleanses your crystals and moonlight is a softer way to let light filter
through your crystals and cleanse them. The best time for this is a full moon.

Using the smoke of sacred herbs such as sage, cedar, and lavender to smudge and cleanse the
energetic matrix of crystals. Smudging with white sage removes negative energy from
crystals and rooms in your house. (Smudging is to light the herbs and burn them, when the
 flame dies the embers burn creating smoke. You then pass your crystal through the smoke
while asking it to be cleansed and purified.)

Place your crystals on a bed of rock salt for 24- 48 hours to purify the crystal's energetic
matrix.

Bury them in the earth, soil or clay for 2 –7 days as this provides a slow and gentle form of
cleansing. The longer you leave it the deeper the cleansing. (Make sure you the spot where
you buried your crystal as they wriggle away and can get lost in the earth)

Water

Cold running water – from the tap is fine for most crystals. Never use warm or hot water.
Water is not recommended for soaking calcite, opals (doublets and triplets), pearls, celestite,
unpolished malachite or turquoise as due to their composition they can dissolve or be
permanently damaged.

Recharging your crystals

We recharge crystals to give them renewed energy. There are many ways to do this:

Placing your crystals in sunlight for an hour or so, will charge most crystals. After a sunbath
on your windowsill, your crystals will be noticeably brighter. You can also place your
crystals on the earth for an additional charge while recharging them under the Sun, Moon or
Stars.

Placing your crystals out under Moonlight is a gentle and penetrating method for recharging
your crystals. The full moons’ light is the brightest in its cycle, thus giving a greater charge to
your crystals.

Placing them out in any dynamic weather conditions such as a thunderstorm provides an
awesome electromagnetic charge to your crystals.

Placing your crystals on an amethyst cluster is great for recharging jewellery and smaller
crystals. You can also place your crystals on a clear quartz cluster that you have programmed
to recharge any crystals you put on it.

Your crystals like to be out in the open, where they can work to their full potential. Keep
them on material or in a bag that is made from silk, satin, velvet or cotton – not man made
fibres. Crystals need to be treated carefully as they are fragile and can chip and split. If you
carry them with you keep them in a bag so they are protected.

Storing your mineral specimens

Select a location that's dry and clean. Exposure to salt air (common in coastal areas), dust, or
moisture can damage or destroy some specimens.

If possible, use boxes made of plastic or acid-free materials to prevent chemical reactions
between the specimen and it's container.
 Keep small, fragile, or soft samples in individual or divided containers that are lined with
tissue. An economical way to store small, fragile samples is in an egg carton.

Try to keep each specimen separate so harder minerals don’t damage softer minerals

Don't use cotton balls or pads to line your boxes. The fibres can stick to your specimens.

Each specimen is unique and can never truly be replaced. Each is collected at a single point in
time, from a specific geographic location, and has a unique genetic or geologic history.

A crystal that has a symmetrical, 7-sided, main face and a small triangle on the side, directly
opposite the main face. A channeling crystal provides access to higher wisdom or

A crystal which came into contact with various other minerals or impurities during the

Crystals with rainbows. Internal fractures and the joining of two crystals together can create
some amazing rainbows, which is the prismatic equivalent of pure white light energy. Useful

Record Keeper or Recorder

Crystals which have small triangular markings on the surface of the crystal. It is believed that
they contain ancient wisdom programmed by both the Atlanteans and the Lemurians in order
to pass on knowledge to us as we are capable of receiving it. One must have a pure heart and
be open to receive the information encoded within them. Very special crystals. These

Self healed
Crystals that have broken and have healed or have begun to heal themselves. Often they form
a smooth glassy surface with small, pyramidal shapes. Powerful healing stones that will share

Soul mate / twin

Two crystals which grow side-by-side- they are a perfect match for one another and therefore
symbolize husband/wife or spiritual soulmates. These crystals can help promote
communication and understanding in relationships and can also help one find their soulmate.

Starbrary
Starbrairies are recognised by the presence of these glyph-like markings, symbols and
geometric patterns plus usually a doorway or key. By aligning fingers with the doorways or
keys, you can unlock different layers, depending on orientation. Companion crystals are
important - they either come with the crystal (purchased with or given with) or appear shortly
thereafter. They don't have to be quartz, but work with the main crystal to unlock different

How do I choose a crystal?

You do not need to know the exact properties of every stone in order to buy one, although
this may help. It is more important to be receptive and allow yourself to be drawn to a stone
that will have meaning for you. If you are in a shop simply stand in front of a group of
crystals, close your eyes and relax, and when you open them choose the one you feel most
drawn to.

When choosing a crystal from an internet site it is not possible to touch the crystal, so you
need to take your intuition one stage further. Browse through the pictures of the various
crystals and note which section most appeals to you. Spend some time browsing through that
section. You may find yourself excited by the picture of a particular crystal, with a powerful
urge to touch and feel it and a sense of frustration that you cannot. If you feel that you very
much want that crystal to be a part of your life, it is likely that on some level it has something
to offer you. For example, you may feel drawn to a rose quartz crystal because you need
something in your life that can help you develop a love of yourself.

You may see many beautiful crystals but none that compel you to buy them. As with all
purchases relating to spiritual growth intent is crucial, and you may need to acknowledge that
the time isn't right. If you buy crystals purely because that is what you set out to do then your
crystals may lack meaning, and you are essentially starting a rock collection. There is nothing
wrong with collecting rocks, but this site is more concerned with using crystals to assist
personal development. If nothing strongly appeals to you, accept that the time is not right and
come back on another day when perhaps a crystal will plead with you, like a gorgeous puppy,
to take it home with you. In our personal development it is sometimes difficult to know what
we need. We may see clearly when helping others with their lives but, as our opinions are
coloured by what we think of ourselves, find it very hard to be objective when looking at our
own. We may like to think w e are loving all the time, but in some situations we may be
sarcastic, or we may think we are forgiving, but in reality find it hard to talk to a person who
has wronged us. Because of this, our conscious selves are not always best at choosing
crystals. You may set out to buy a citrine crystal, having read that it can help dissipate
negative energy, but be prepared to have your unconscious lead you to a different crystal. The
unconscious or higher self doesn’t get involved with life's day-to-day clutter and thus can get
straight down to the business of selecting the most appropriate crystal for you. This is why
the best approach to choosing a crystal is to quieten your mind and simply do what feels

Healing with crystals

Different crystals have different energies and properties, and between them can affect mental,
physical, spiritual and emotional aspects of ourselves. Simply holding the right crystal at the
right time can bring about a change in our attitude and well-being. You don't necessarily need
to look up the meaning each time you do this. Over time you may acquire a number of
crystals - just take hold of the one you feel drawn to.

The right crystal can affect the energy of an environment, and the energy it holds can
influence you whether you simply hold it in your hand or place it by your bed or on the
mantelpiece. Crystal healers use their knowledge of the stones and of the patient in the
healing process. There are various methods of healing with crystals, such as placing crystals
on and around a person while they are lying down, or using a wand or point to focus love,
energy and intent on the other person in a way that relates specifically to their ailment and

Can the wrong crystal do me harm?

As with many objects used for divination and healing, a crystal can only do harm in the
wrong hands. A crystal healer only uses a crystal as a tool. A great crystal does not make a
great crystal healer, just as a great paintbrush does not make a great painter. You do need to
take some care if you are looking for a crystal healer. If you cannot get a recommendation
from a previous client, speak to the healer before accepting treatment. If you don't feel you
would trust them in some everyday matter, neither should you trust them with your well-
being. You should try to buy crystals from a reputable supplier and, after receiving them, it is
wise to cleanse them (see above) of any negative energy that they may previously have
absorbed. Use your intuition and you cannot go far wrong. If one day you feel a crystal no
longer belongs in your home, it may be time to give it away. As you change you may find
that you want different crystals around you, although many will stay with you happily for a
long time.
