AN ORDINANCE

Amending Title 12 of The Philadelphia Code, entitled “Traffic Code,” by adding a new
Chapter, entitled “Bicycle Lanes,” requiring the designation of bicycle lanes by
ordinance, adding definitions to Section 12-102, and making certain technical changes,
all under certain terms and conditions.

THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA HEREBY ORDAINS:

SECTION 1. Title 12 of the Philadelphia Code is hereby amended to read as follows:

TITLE 12. TRAFFIC CODE

CHAPTER 12-100. GENERAL PROVISIONS

§ 12-102. Definitions.

In this Title the following definitions apply:

(1.1) Bicycle Lane. The portion of a street set aside exclusively for bicycle travel.

CHAPTER 12-700. [RESERVED] BICYCLE LANES.

§ 12-701. Designation of Bicycle Lanes.

(1) No bicycle lane shall be designated upon any street except for bicycle lanes
listed in subsection (2) of this Section.

(2) A bicycle lane shall be designated upon the following streets and shall be
installed in a manner consistent with PennDOT regulations:

(3) Any bicycle lane lawfully in existence prior to the date this Section was added
to the Code may continue in existence until otherwise determined by the Department of
Streets.

SECTION 2. This Ordinance shall take effect immediately.
